The 10 cheapest holiday destinations, 2017
Where can you go in 2017 that won't break the bank?
The Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer by the Post Office monitors eight common tourist items in 44 resorts and cities to see where your holiday money will stretch the furthest.
The items include such everyday things such as a cup of coffee, a bottle of beer, sun cream and insect repellent. Nine of the top 10 cheapest places are in Europe, but number eight may surprise you!
1. The Algarve, Portugal
2. Sunny Beach, Bulgaria
Second place again this year – although certain items are much cheaper here, including sun cream, beer and insect repellent. 14 places to inspire a visit to beautiful Bulgaria
3. Costa del Sol, Spain
A very good value destination, although the average price of a meal for two here is more than in the Algarve or Sunny Beach – but this could reflect the very high quality restaurants that can be found here, particularly in the Malaga area.
4. Marmaris, Turkey
Still very good value, but sun cream is expensive so take your own to keep costs down. 10 Things You Don't Know About Turkey
5. Prague, Czech Republic
The best-value European city. In particular, beer is cheap here! 8 European city breaks for 2017
6. Paphos, Cyprus
A favourite of Clickstay villa renters, and good value accommodation too.
7. Budapest, Hungary
The second-best value European city, though it has slipped in the rankings. Budapest Boasts Cheapest Booze in Europe, According to a Post Office Survey
8. Tokyo, Japan
A long haul flight, but relatively good value when you get there - although eating out will cost you twice as much as in the Algarve, on average.
9. Sliema, Malta
Beer and wine are both cheap here, and it’s really just the average cost of a restaurant meal that pushes this up. Perhaps self-catering is the answer?
10. Corfu, Greece
The closest of the Greek Islands to the UK, Corfu comes in at the number 10 cheapest destination.
