Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands, and is characterised by stunning scenery; wild meadows and vineyards, pine forests spilling down the mountainsides towards the sea, and sheer cliffs framing many of the beaches. Subterranean lakes and spectacular caves which can be explored by kayak; ancient monasteries and churches tucked away in green valleys or perched on rocky heights.
The white pebble and sand beaches of Kefalonia are lapped by incredibly blue waters and while the island is a popular villa holiday destination it remains steeped in tranquillity and unspoilt by tourism.
Fiscardo on the north coast is a traditional but upmarket fishing village with excellent restaurants; on the south coast resorts such as Skala offer unrivalled access to the island’s striking landscape and interesting flora and fauna – nesting loggerhead turtles can be found at most of the beaches on the south of the island.
