The sun-kissed island of Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canaries. Popular for having over 3,000 hours of annual sunshine, this utopian holiday destination is also known for its pristine coastline, azure blue waters and 150 white sand beaches where you can enjoy the gentle sea breeze and otherworldly volcanic landscape. Discover vast golden beaches, a wide range of water-sports and excellent bars and restaurants offering both traditional and international cuisines.
Some airlines fly directly to Fuerteventura from the UK and Europe, and there are also connecting flights through Tenerife. Flights from the UK to any of the Canarian islands are a little over 4 hours long. Flying from Tenerife to Fuerteventura, however, is another 50 minutes. It’s a good idea to check with the owner on Clickstay whether they organise transfers from the airport. If not, taxis and shuttles are always an option. It’s a 45 minutes drive to Corralejo, and 110 minutes to Morro Jable.
Puerto del Rosario is a lively urban city full of attractions for tourists. Surrounded by the emerald waters of the Atlantic, the capital of Fuerteventura is known for its whitewashed houses and picturesque promenade. Caleta de Fuste resort, on the eastern coast, popped up almost overnight and is famous for vibrant nightlife, its gorgeous wide sheltered beach and golf courses. Corralejo, on the northern coast, is the jewel of La Oliva district and an excellent location for exploring Fuerteventura’s rich history, upscale resorts and the breath-taking northern landscape. El Cotillo fishing village offers a slower pace of life away from the bustle of street sellers and overcrowded tourist shops. Morro Jable is somewhere in between - not so much a vibrant resort, but not quiet either. There is a good quality golf course nearby, and loads of exciting activities for the entire family.
The beautiful secluded bays dotted around the more popular family-oriented beaches make Fuerteventura the perfect holiday destination to experience laid-back island life. Fuerteventura boasts large stretches of beaches with all the facilities and amenities that make for a relaxing break beside the Atlantic. As mentioned earlier, Playa del Castillo in Caleta de Fuste is gorgeous. Wide and sheltered with tons of available activities, the beach is perfect for a family holiday. Playa de Sotavento is a little different. Located in the south east of Fuerteventura, it’s a very quiet and immense beach with Sahara-like dunes in the backdrop and crystal clear waters in front. Playa del Castillo on the north western coast is naturally sheltered by cliffs and there’s very little waves and wind. The beach is perfect for families with children. Similar to Playa de Sotavento, Playa de Cofete does not offer amenities, resorts, or hotels, but instead offers serenity, beauty and miles of sand.
Fuerteventura boasts 4 golf courses, two of which are next to each other, near Caleta de Fuste - Fuerteventura Golf and Salinas de Antigua. Both courses are 18 holes and in outstanding shape with fairways well-kept and excellent greens. Due to these two courses, Las Playitas Golf course is often overlooked, and it shouldn’t be. It’s a fine looking par 70 course with 18 holes and neatly groomed fairways and greens. Jandía Golf is also a top-notch course. It’s 18 holes, par 72, built in 1995. Located in the southernmost part of the island, among the mostly barren landscape, it’s astonishing to see this course so well-maintained.
This Spanish gem boasts a huge choice of leisure activities which you’ll especially love if you have a passion for water sports. Whether you base yourself in Puerto del Rosario, Costa Calma or El Cotillo, there are plenty of resorts along Fuerteventura's coast offering an array of outdoor activities - from snorkeling and dolphin watching excursions to bike and coastal walking tours. The entire island has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2009. For nature lovers, the vast stretch of rolling sand dunes at Corralejo Natural Park is a must-see; Cuchillos de Vigán is a stunning waterfront natural park with an interpretation centre; and you can learn so much about the diverse natural beauty of the Canaries at Jandía Natural Park.
If travelling with children, you want to stay in larger resorts, towns and ports offering a range of fun activities for kids and even adults. Several beaches in Morro Jable piece together over 5 kilometers long stretch of sand with loads of activities available. Also - and this is pretty much the case with all larger resorts on the island - there are at least several boat agencies in the port offering all kinds of activities like dolphin watching, surfing lessons and snorkeling. Oasis Park in La Lajita offers some quite exciting rides for the entire family, and so does Acua Water Park in Corralejo, which is closed for the winter and reopens on April 1st.
Hiring a car or taxi seems to be a more practical option, but using a bus to get around Fuerteventura is a lot cheaper. For example, a taxi from Puerto del Rosario to Morro Jable costs over 100 Euros. Hiring a small car for a week would cost between 80-130 Euros, plus gas; the price depends on the agency you use and the time of visit. On the other hand, getting from Puerto del Rosario to Morro Jable by bus costs about 10 Euros. So, even though it covers only the eastern coast and some central parts of the island, public transport is definitely a cheaper, but less practical option.
For a taste of authentic Fuerteventura there are plenty of traditional Spanish restaurants and original tapas bars where you'll find a friendly local atmosphere. Tapas bars are perfect for grabbing a quick and cheap meal, but for fine dining visit any of the delightful restaurants all over Fuerteventura. El Bar de Marko in Costa Calma is one of the better choices for a tapas meal. The restaurant is surprisingly cheap considering the quality and quantity it offers. Casa Santa Maria is a Spanish restaurant charmingly settled in the historic quarter in Betancuria. The restaurant is a bit pricier, but offers a great range of excellent dishes and the quaint interior is nothing short of amazing.
Fuerteventura is a rather relaxing holiday destination, catering mostly to those looking to enjoy nature in tranquility. However, after sundown you can enjoy the lively nightlife at the many cocktail and karaoke bars, as well as beach bars that transform into mini clubs along the seafront in lager resorts. Retro, in Corralejo, is a bar and restaurant with great tapas, excellent cocktails and live music - perfect for an amiable night out. The atmosphere at Pieros Cafe and Restaurante, in Caleta de Fuste, can get a little livelier depending on the night of the week. They put on live music shows, comedy shows and karaoke.
Though there’s few shopping options in Fuerteventura, you can still stumble on some good shops and stores in larger resorts. Corralejo, for example, is brimming with all kinds of stores, boutiques, tobacco shops, gift shops… There are also several good shopping malls in Corralejo, Solana Matorral, Costa Calma and Caleta de Fuste with some upmarket suppliers and fast food joints. If looking for some authentic Canarian crafts to take home with you, Trecepeces Fuerteventura in Ajuy has some quite interesting items.

Here at Clickstay HQ, we're BIG fans of the Canary Islands. And apparently so are our renters - with Tenerife being one of our most popular destinations. These (strictly Spanish) islands off the coast of Africa make the perfect winter holiday destination, not least because it's warm all year round and this means they're geared up for tourists December through February. Have you ever dreamt of a warm, BBQ-on-the-beach-style Christmas away? Well, you don't have to go as far as Australia for that. Why not try Fuerteventura...
Fuerteventura is the second largest Canary Island and sits on the Atlantic Ocean, 100km off the coast of Africa. You’d be forgiven for believing you were standing on the continent, as Fuerteventura is home to a sparse landscape, dotted with flat-topped buildings, farmland, wandering goats, mountains reaching high into the sky and crystal-clear waters hugging the horizon. Leanne, the Marketing Assistant at Clickstay recently took a relaxing break to the Canary Island, she ventured to the south in Morro Jable. These are her personal recommendations of what not to miss if you’re planning a trip to Fuerteventura…
