Kalkan is a popular resort set in a pretty harbour town on the Lycian Coast. This Turkish destination offers a location near sea, mountains and great things for families to see and do.
1. Hike The Lycian Way
Who doesn't love a good family walk? Well, luckily for those enthusiastic teenagers of yours; Kalkan is on the route of the old-time Lycian Way. Enjoy a world-class walk at your own pace with a trail that meanders around the coast of Ancient Lycia. It'll be most comfortable for families to attempt the hike in cooler months, but there'll be prime selfie opportunities waiting to happen year-round. Learn about more great hiking trails in Turkey.
2. Look At Ancient Ruins
Take a day trip to nearby Patara. Not only does it boast Turkey's longest beach, but Patara is also home to the remains of the mysterious ancient Lycian city. It's still being excavated, but there are lots of treasures for you to discover including Roman baths and an impressive theatre. The perfect excursion for any budding archaeologist.
3. Take A Leisurely Gulet Trip
A local gulet tour offers a wonderful opportunity to explore more of the beautiful Turquoise Coast. Lounge back in one of the traditional wooden boats for a relaxing cruise around the bays. The perfect low-maintenance lazy day outing ideal for keeping the kids occupied on holiday. You can even get lunch provided on some of the longer routes, so that'll put an end to any grumbles.
4. Go to the beach
It goes without saying, but there are lots of lovely beaches in Kalkan. Its eponymous white-sand beach boasts a pebbly stretch famed for its astoundingly clear waters. In fact, the coastline surrounding Kalkan is one of the very best for snorkelling due to its crystal clear shores. This makes it ideal for beginners or less confident, younger swimmers. Alternatively, you can drive a little further to nearby Kaş for one of Turkey's top diving sites.
5. Visit Saklikent Gorge
Pile the family into the hire car and drive half an hour to Saklikent National Park. Home to the fantastic Saklikent Gorge aka the deepest canyon in Turkey, you and your family will be captivated by the walk up through the awe-inspiring scenery. There's also a great range of fun park activities for the kids to try, including lazy river rafting, so don't forget to bring your best water/beach shoes! For an extra thrill, you can also zipline across the river. Which route back to the car will you choose?
