Travel back in time and discover remnants of its rich past at the 17th century Casa del Apero, housing the Archaeological Museum in the heart of town. Those with a sweet tooth will love a visit to one of the traditional Thursday markets, where you can sample sugar cane delicacies fresh from the molasses factory in the 16th century Nuestra Senora del Carmen mansion. Amongst a wealth of historic and cultural monuments in the heart of Frigiliana well worth a visit are also the 17th century Old Fountain, the Church of San Antonio de Padua, the Arab's Castle ruins and the Hermitage of Ecce Homo. Immerse yourself in the colourful celebrations of the Festival of Three Cultures, in August. Nature enthusiasts will love a stroll around Santa Fiora botanical garden in the heart of Frigiliana, but the real gem is Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park; get lost in nature with a hike around the amazing ravines, rugged crags and steep slopes, go climbing, or explore the world of exotic flora and fauna. The waterfalls and natural pools of the Higueron river are the perfect base for wild swimming and family picnics. Just 7km from the coast, sun-worshippers and beachgoers are spoilt for choice, with plenty of sandy beaches to pick from and at just a short distance from all the hustle and bustle of the busy coastal resorts.
The nearest beaches to Frigiliana are in Nerja, 15 minutes’ drive away. Nerja’s two main beaches are Burriana and Torrecilla, which is just as lively, but significantly smaller. Playa Burriana, in the east of Nerja's centre, boasts a large, flat stretch of sand and pebbles, with all kinds of sporting activities, children’s play areas, shops, bars and restaurants. Playa Torrecilla is a small beach with an attractive promenade and the ruins of an old Moorish watchtower. The rocky peninsula at either end of Torrecilla beach are great spots for snorkelling and fishing. If you're after a peaceful day by the beach, visit nearby Torrox or Maro resorts.
