Benalmadena is a popular tourist town in Spain’s Costa del Sol between Torremolinos and Fuengirola, on the southern coast. Benalmadena Costa, the focal point of this area, is the seafront residential neighbourhood stretching all the way to the striking Puerto Marina - one of the most beautiful modern marinas in the world. With plenty of neighbouring resorts and cities, Benalmadena is an ideal base to explore the surrounding region. Discover landscaped gardens, historic monuments and excellent restaurants where you can enjoy traditional Spanish as well as international cuisine.

How to get to Benalmádena

A direct flight from the UK or mainland Europe to the nearest airport, Malaga, takes about 3 hours, and Benalmadena is just 20 minutes from Malaga airport. To get to your accommodation, you might first want to check if the owner or agent of the property organises transportation from the airport, before considering other options. On the other hand, there are always taxis outside the airport, and fares to Benalmadena are usually between 20 and 30 Euros. You can also call an UBER in Benalmadena, but it’s far from the UBER service in the UK. Buses are also a good option, you can catch a bus from Malaga to Fuengirola, and Benalmadena is on the way. Trains from Malaga have two lines - C1 and C2. C1 line goes south from Malaga and can get you to Benalmadena in about 20 minutes, it’s quite cheap as well.

Where to stay in Benalmádena

Benalmadena Pueblo, a couple of minutes from the coastline, is a traditional Andalusian whitewashed village with cobbled streets dotted with cosy cafes and tapas bars where you can enjoy fine dining and awe-inspiring views of the coast and Mediterranean. Torremuelle is peaceful with few quiet restaurants and a lovely beach; and so is Carvajal, though the main beach is one of the most beautiful in Benalmadena. For a livelier holiday, stay in the town of Benalmadena - there are wonderful beaches, great shops and restaurants and activities for kids.

Beaches in Benalmádena

Benalmadena’s fine dark sand beaches are really something special and each has its own distinct charm. Whichever one you prefer, Benalmadena beaches allow you to enjoy the extensive stretch of coastline in your own special way. La Viborilla beach is arguably the most beautiful and a real slice of paradise with its tiny coves, surrounded by a small forest and dotted with palm trees and pretty straw beach umbrellas. Benalmadena’s beaches are mainly centred around Puerto Marina. They vary from wide, sandy beaches perfect for families, to rocky coves that are best suited for serious swimmers. Undoubtedly, Benalmadena is home to some of the finest beaches on the Costa del Sol. Carvajal, Santa Ana, Fuente de la Salud and Boliches are the most famous and are awarded Blue Flag status for their beautiful fine sands, aquamarine waters, high standard of cleanliness and excellent facilities. The beaches are easily accessible by foot or car, with tranquil waters suitable for families with small children. For a change of scenery, Benalmadena Costa towards Torremuelle is where you'll find quieter, more secluded spots.

Golf courses in Benalmádena

Benalmadena has several golf courses. The nearest is the 18-hole Torrequebrada Golf, one of the finest in the Costa del Sol with greens and fairways which are very well-kept. This is definitely a hidden gem, with very few golfers actually playing on it. It’s an 18 hole course with a luxurious clubhouse and an excellent bar. Another magnificent course is Benalmádena Golf. This 9 hole course is also hardly ever crowded; it’s very well kept, and the restaurant is top notch.

Things to do in Benalmádena

Benalmadena Pueblo is home to the magnificent Coromanes Castle, in the town’s centre - a monument dedicated to the life of Cristopher Columbus. Another cultural gem well worth a visit is the Benalmádena Stupa, the largest Buddhist temple of the Western World! Stroll down the famous Puerto Marina with its luxury yachts, or sample the delicious gastronomy at the upscale restaurants and bars. At sundown, watch the world go by at the impressive marina, awarded 'Best Marina in the World' several times.

Activities for kids in Benalmádena

In the centre of Benalmadena Costa lies Paloma Park, an urban green oasis with beautiful landscaped gardens. For families, Selwo Marina marine park with its exotic wildlife is the perfect place to keep the kids entertained. Puerto Marina is the beating heart of Benalmadena, hosting a wide range of activities, including boat rides, fishing and dolphin-watching trips. Enjoy the rides at Tivoli World, the park that puts Benalmadena on the map. You can pre-purchase tickets online and save up to 21 percent on ticket price. Sea Life Benalmádena is located in the Puerto Marina and though it’s rather small, there’s so much to see. The staff is attentive, and the tours informative and educational.

Getting around Benalmádena

The easiest way to get around Benalmadena is by taxi. Getting from Benalmadena to Fuengirola costs between 15 and 20 Euros. Travelling by bus is also an option. The bus network connects Benalmadena to the local three districts - Benalmádena Pueblo, Arroyo de la Miel and Benalmádena Costa. However, the best way to travel around Benalmadena is by train. It’s inexpensive, the C1 line connects all resorts between Malaga to Fuengirola and there is a train every 15 to 20 minutes. But whether you choose bus or train, make sure to pick up the timetables first.

Where to eat in Benalmádena

Benalmadena offers some superb places to eat. Between low-priced snack bars or fast foods and luxurious highly-acclaimed restaurants, it’s up to you to make your pick. Puerto Marina is the town’s window to the sea and it’s brimming with fantastic places to eat. El Mero is a great choice for a romantic evening and Agrentinian beef is delicious at the Angus restaurant, but we’ll have to go with Tex Mex Gringo's. The food is delicious, portions substantial and service excellent. There is also a great choice of restaurants in Benalmádena Pueblo, and the couple that stand out are La Perla and Chino Hong Kong.

Nightlife in Benalmádena

Puerto Marina is where the nightlife is hottest, just look at the options here. Along the N-340 alone there is a lovely selection of bars, like Molly Malone’s Bar and Monica’s Corner. And if you head toward the marina, Kaleido Puerto Marina is the most popular bar there. It is a bit pricier but offers great cocktails and service, and it’s superbly located. For a peaceful night out, Benalmadena Pueblo proves to be quite a choice. There is a bunch of easy-going bars absorbed in a soothing atmosphere, like Bull Bar and Bar Cazalla.

Shopping in Benalmádena

The main street market, Mercadillo Arroyo De La Miel, on the car park by Tivoli World opens on Friday at around 9 o'clock and almost everything’s for sale - from clothes, fresh produce, trinkets to flowers and spices. Another street market that opens on Wednesday is the one next to Paloma Park. For an even larger street market that opens on Tuesdays, head to Fuengirola. There are also a couple of shopping malls in Benalmadena, but the best one is Puerto Marina Shopping. Apart from shops selling everything and anything, there are also few restaurants with great chow in the mall.
