Vine Ridge Retreats

Agent from Comares, Spain

About

David and Jacqui Cullimore set up Vine Ridge Retreats 12 years ago, initially we began with 2 rentals then we built a 3rd and before long we were helping other owners in this area with their own places and set up a family run agency business. Although many of our places are rural and close to our own place in Comares we also have places on the coast, so overall we have places that can sleep between 2 and 17 guests and we have rural and coastal places, so normally we can help and being owners as well as local agents we endeavour to help with your needs.

A fabulous location with views to die for. Extremely friendly and helpful owners. You would want for nothing. Comares is a delightful and totally un-touristy town.Near enough to the coast to enjoy the beach beach so you have the best of both worlds.

We had such an amazing time here. David took us from the airport and we had beautiful, funny and touching conversations. He was really helpful and since we came to the place, we felt totally private and at home. Not mentioning the breath-taking mountains and birds flying in the sky, flowers blooming all around, pool with hot sun and perfect place for sunbathing (we got even a bit too much of the sun 🙂 there is also a very nice 20/30 min. hike up to the city of Comares, genuinely recommed to have some walks there - the road is really beautiful, the city is calm, authentic and not spoiled by tourists at all. We would love to come back when there is a chance.! Greetings from Lithuania!

If you want to visit an authentic part of Spain; look out at stunning, spectacular views every day; go trekking on the mountainside in warm weather (even in winter) or just relax and chill out in an apartment in a fabulous villa with a swimming pool, a jacuzzi, great hosts and unbeatable prices, yet still only 40 minutes from the beaches of Torre del Mar (if you can drag yourself away), then Vine Ridge Retreats near the village of Comares, is the perfect place for you. We have just stayed there for one week and wish it could have been much longer. It was the first time we had stayed in accommodation where the owner was on site and were not sure how it would work out. But it couldn't have been better! David (the owner) was very friendly and welcoming and put us at our ease right away. Throughout our stay he was always there to answer any questions and was very knowledgeable about the surrounding area. We were there house hunting and he went out of his way to help. His advice and knowledge were invaluable in pointing us in the right direction for first time buyers in Spain. Although David was always there when he was needed he was also careful to respect our privacy and to give us our own space. In summary; Vine Ridge Retreats is a great place to stay for the reasons mentioned, and many more, but no review would be complete without a mention for David's three little helpers- AKA Bruno, Charlie and Chico – three of the cutest and friendliest dogs you will ever meet. They made an enjoyable experience even more enjoyable. Needless to say: we will be back!

Just arrived back from a 10 day stay at Vine Ridge. David and Jaqui are great hosts and have a wealth of knowledge of the area. The apartment is well equipped and has everything you need for your stay. The views, amazing! Incredible sunsets and sunrises and you see something different everytime you look. It is remote but for us, that was the beauty of the place and we all found it incredibly relaxing. A few good restaurants in the village of Comares but the walk isnt for the faint hearted! Torres del Mar is well worth a visit, good restaurants and a great vibe.

1 Nov 2014 5/5 "fantastic place to stay" Our recent 10 day visit to Casa La Trocha and Comares has been a truly peaceful and relaxing experience. The villa is absolutely gorgeous and the attention to detail in the way it has been furnished is exquisite – it really is a home from home, and we found everything we needed for the perfect holiday. The scenery is breathtaking and the quiet tranquillity of the location lends itself to a completely chilled out holiday. Our hosts, David and Jacqui were on hand to guide us in from the airport and made us feel very welcome on our arrival. David and Jacqui are great hosts and were on hand during our stay to help with any queries we had. The villa was spotlessly clean and a little welcome pack including a bottle of wine and some beers had been left for us – with thanks. The style of the villa is traditionally Moorish and the standard of decoration far superior to that expected of a holiday let. The villa has a pool which is cleaned out weekly by a local man who very kindly arrived with a basket of freshly picked figs and plums for us. Although there are other properties quite close by, Casa La Trocha provides a reasonable degree of privacy and the surrounding area is very quiet. The town of Comares is perched on the top of the mountain, and although we had hired a car we venture to walk up there one evening. Definitely not a climb for the fainthearted or one we would recommend for the slightly tubby over 50s category – which we are!! The path is very loose rubble much of the way uphill and it took us a good 40 minutes- including several stops along the way to gather breath and admire the far reaching landscape below us, but boy were we ready for the first cold beer of the evening once we arrived in Comares and what an amazing little town it is! Well worth all the effort, but a journey probably best made in a car unless you are serious hikers. (It is worth mentioning here that Jose, the local taxi driver lives just 500 metres from the villa and his prices are very reasonable if you fancy an evening out without the car). Although the kitchen in the villa has just about every appliance and utensil you could possibly require, we found it far more enjoyable to cook fresh fish and meat on the outside barbeque and relax and enjoy our surroundings. There is a huge supermarket called Eroski just as you come off the motorway from Malaga at junction 272 that can supply you with everything you could possible need – the fresh fish counter being exceptionally good! In addition, there is a very good supermarket in Benamargosa (about 15 minutes drive away from the villa) which proved very handy to top up supplies at. It is not a 24/7, but David and Jacqui will point you in the right direction. We ate out a couple of times. The little bar on the square at Comares made us a lovely supper for less than 10 euros and on our last night after packing our suitcases we decided to eat out at Bar Andalucía in Benamargosa. It is a small local bar with a good selec tion of tapas and in our very limited vocabulary of Spanish ordered a selec tion to try. After munching our way through two heaving platters and whilst in the process of congratulating each other on this triumph, a further two huge platters arrived – much to the amusement of the locals and the waiter serving us! We could have fed the entire bar with our supper, but the entire cost – including drinks was less than 30 euros. You will need to hire a car to get about. We chose to hire from Brunos because they offer a completely all inclusive package with no hidden charges on arrival. Our Nissan Micra coped admirably with the inclines, but if you intend to do a lot of drive much further afield, you may be well served to choose something a little sturdier. However, a word of caution if hiring a car. Speeding cameras are not as visible as those in the UK as we found whilst driving back to Malaga airport, and a 50 euro on the spot fine might have been avoided had we known. However, the police officer was most apologetic and charming, and by paying the fine on the spot avoids penalty points – so not all bad news! We thoroughly enjoyed our 10 days at Casa La Trocha and would highly recommend it to anyone seeking total relaxation in a serene and beautiful part of Spain. We hope to return one day and thank David and Jacqui for a lovely break and for making us so very welcome.

Vine Ridge is just as described so read what it says on the tin and enjoy, in the knowledge that you will be well looked after by you hosts. "

Brilliant second visit 5 out of 5 Our second visit to Vine Ridge was even better than we had remembered. We expected/feared that Comares would have been "discovered" and be full of English bars offering fried breakfasts. Instead, we were delighted to find how little it had changed in four years. From the studio, the views are stunning and the air is almost silent - lying by the pool admiring the view is a perfect way to spend the holiday. Although we hired a car - with good intentions to explore the area - its extremely difficult to find the motivation to leave the pool. Whereas normally a need for bottled water or desire for wine/ice cream would do it, David and Jacqui have introduced a poolside honesty bar equipped with various drinks and a selec tion of ice cream. And there are homemade pizzas available to buy for an evening meal. So the hire car had very little mileage on it when we got back to Malaga airport! The studio itself is very clean, very comfortable and perfectly equipped for self-catering. Its full of little homely touches (such as all the little carved wooden games) that go well beyond the usual sparse holiday accommodation. The Sky tv and the Wi-fi provide a link back to the English-speaking world should you need a dose of reality. David and Jacqui are friendly and incredibly helpful hosts. Having arrived on a Sunday (no shops open) before a bank holiday Monday (no shops open), they let us borrow food and toiletries until we could get to a supermarket! Another talent of theirs is the foolproof directions from Malaga airport. We got exactly what we wanted from this holiday - peace, quiet and relaxation. Its not (as my grandmother misheard from "Malaga") Magaluf but its the perfect place if you want to see a more unspoilt Spain. Thanks to David, Jacqui, the girls and the dogs for another brilliant holiday! Emma and James Review Submitted: 6-Aug-2013 Date of Stay: Jun 2013
