KALKAN
Kalkan is the jewel in the crown of the Turquoise Coast. It is a Mediterranean fishing village with old Bougainvillia clad buildings, shops, roof-top bars and restaurants linked by narrow cobbled streets. The locals are all incredibly friendly, and adore children. Kalkan is spoilt for choice for restaurants-many of which have delightful roof-terraces with spectacular views. It is a sleepy place during the day-but at night comes alive as people arrive to shop and eat out. The myriad of shops offer traditional turkish items from carpets, leather goods and spices to all kinds of designer clothes, silverware , jewellery and beautiful pottery. There are many supermarkets, butchers, and greengrocers, some of which will deliver to the villa.
Sea Taxis operate during the day from the harbour taking people to the various Kalkan Beach Clubs..
Kalkan is a very popular stop-off point for Gulet and sailing holidays-the harbour is often packed with beautiful boats, some of which can be hired, very reasonably, for a days trip around the bays and islands off the local coast. All trips include a delicious lunch with excellent local wine and beer!!
Kaputas Beach is a 10 minute drive to the East with its beautiful sandy beach, and Patarra Beach is a 15 minute drive to the West - one of the Worlds Top 10 Beaches 12 miles long - deserted in places, with many ancient ruins. It is also a protected area to ensure the safety of the Turtles that nest there every year..
Many people return to Kalkan year after year, entranced by its charms and lovely weather, and many good friendships are made there...
LYCIA
Kalkan is set in the heart of the old Lycian region... There are some spectacular ancient ruins within a short drive which, unlike the UK , one can actually walk on and around. The closest ones are Xanthos (the old Lycian Capital), Patarra and Tlos, with the sunken City of Kekova an hour away , where you can view the sunken ruins from a glass-bottomed boat.
Saklikent Gorge, a 30 minute drive away, is the longest and deepest Limestone gorge in Turkey. The ice cold water gushes out of mountain springs...It is a spectacular walk and there are some excellent restaurants....From here you can also go white-water rafting down the river which is excellent fun...
The Taurus Mountains tower behind Kalkan, and in winter are often snow-capped. The Lycian Way passes within a couple of miles of the village...The brave can parascend back down in 20 minutes after an hours drive up, and land back in Kalkan Harbour!!...A trip up into the mountains and surrounding villages is highly reccommended..
The combination of the wonderful weather, beautiful beaches, ancient history, turquoise sea, staggering scenery, and the wonderful welcome, make Kalkan somewhere you will want to come back to time-and-time again...
