The small resort village of Orasac sits on an attractive stretch of coastline just 10 miles north of Dubrovnik. Lush green hillsides tumble down to the turquoise water of the Adriatic and luxurious hotels, bars and restaurants are all within a short walk.
The historic city of Dubrovnik has dominated the area for hundreds of years. Once a powerful sea trading nation that rivalled Venice, the city has survived numerous battles, including the relatively recent siege during the War of Independence in 1991.
Today Dubrovnik Old Town attracts visitors from around the world, drawn to see its magnificent city walls, and beautiful gem of a city inside.
Surrounded by magnificent city walls stretching almost 2 kilometres around the Old City, Dubrovnik can be accessed on foot by one of two impressive city gates – Ploce Gate to the east of the city or Pile Gate to the west. Inside the city, you will find a medieval maze of limestone paved streets leading off the broad central street, known as the Stradun, or Placa.
Gleaming in the sunshine, the street is lined by restaurants and cafes perfect for a leisurely lunch after exploring the city’s historic monuments. Admire the architecturally stunning Sponza Palace, once the customs house for the city, or head into the impressive Rector’s Palace, now home to the fascinating Cultural Historical Museum.
At the far end of the Stradun is the ornate Great Onofrio Fountain. Designed by Italian architect Onofrio dell Cava, it forms part of an aqueduct built to supply the city with clean water in 1438.
The monumental city walls are unmissable. Steps near the Pile Gate lead up onto the walls from where you can take in the beauty of the city from above, its terracotta-tiled roofs glowing in the sunshine.
For guests in search of beach time, there is a selection of attractive beaches in the area, the closest of which is in the secluded bay next to the Dubrovnik Sun Gardens hotel.
Enjoy a dip in the crystal clear waters of this beautiful pebble beach, with loungers, towels and umbrellas provided by the hotel. For the ultimate in relaxation, massages are also available by arrangement with the hotel’s spa.
This spacious and comfortable villa will keep most kids more than happy, with a fabulous pool, large TV and Wi-Fi to keep them connected to their friends.
The local beach is just a short drive away, but closer to Dubrovnik are the family friendly beaches of the Lapad peninsula, including Uvala Lapad, with its waterslides, trampolines and aquapark guaranteed to offer hours of entertainment to younger guests, and also Copacabana beach at Babin Kuk, which, although not much like its Brazilian namesake in looks, is an attractive bay popular with families.
The gentle, shallow water is ideal for young children, and there are plenty of activities to try out, including banana boat rides, pedaloes, water polo and waterskiing.
The beautiful island of Lokrum, just a short ride by water taxi from Dubrovnik harbour, offers a fantastic day out for families with children. This lush, uninhabited isle is home to just peacocks and rabbits. Explore its fascinating botanical garden and woodland paths leading up to Fort Royal, the abandoned fortress that sits overlooking the island.
Climb the dramatic rock formations by the sea, go snorkelling, or spend some time by the magical ‘Dead Sea’ – an inland salt-water pool with a swing rope for jumping into the turquoise water below.
A visit into Dubrovnik itself is unmissable. Kids will love to climb the ancient fortified walls of this stunning medieval city and take in the views from the top.
Almost two kilometres in length, the huge walls are punctuated by six fortresses, the largest of which, St John, towers over the harbour, and is home to both the city’s maritime museum and aquarium, offering plenty of diversions for younger visitors.
Alternatively, just outside the city’s Ploce Gate, visitors can take the cable car which travels to the top of nearby Mount Srd, offering breathtaking views of the city and the sparkling sea from the air.
Enjoy the magnificent views from the top along with a drink at the restaurant before heading back down. Enthusiastic youngsters may fancy the idea of heading down on foot – a marked trail leads the way and offers more opportunities to enjoy the view.
