This north eastern part of Spain has a wild and varied beauty that has brought people here from far and wide for centuries. The flat delta lands of the south give way to fertile hills which lead to the massive Pyrenees, all dotted with characterful small towns and villages along with the big exciting city of Barcelona and the equally charming Girona.
We have been trying to keep this part of Spain a secret but with the arrival of cheap flights to Barcelona (easyJet) and Gerona, Perpignan and Beziers (Ryanair) more and more people are finding out about this pleasant land. With its own language, repressive history and unusual festivals, Catalunya has a sure identity of which it is very proud
Tip: Don't ask for Paella here - you'll be told to go on holiday to Costa del Sol..........!
Cadaques is in the far north-eastern corner of Spain where the Pyrennees mountains tumble into the Mediterranean sea. Its still a white washed village, straggling a rocky bay, reached by a twisty mountain road that has protected it from the ravages of vulgar development that so much of Spain has suffered. Its major claim to fame is that it was the home of the world famous Spanish painter Salvador Dali, whose museum home (only 10 minutes walk from the apartment) you can now visit.
Cadaques is a busy retreat for the people of Barcelona and the south of France throughout the year, particularly at weekends. During July and August there are a variety of music and arts festivals, along with street entertainment. At the last count there were nearly 100 restaurants and bars in this small village so you can eat very well or indeed very cheaply too. Nightlife is quite laid back, centered on the dozen or so music bars that open up at about 11.00pm.
This rugged part of the coast line is perfect for swimming, diving and snorkelling; many of the cove type beaches are quiet havens to enjoy with a relaxing summer holiday novel. The hilly interior is challenging walking and biking country, where you will find vineyards, horse riding, monasteries and deserted farmsteads.
The near by port of Rosas has long sandy beaches, sailing and a thriving skydiving centre. Dali's world class museum in Figueras is a must.
