Villas and apartments in Split
The stunning city of Split was created by the Roman emperor Diocletian when he opted to build a pleasure palace here in the 4th century. Today much off the palace has been occupied by residents making their homes and work-places within the palace basement and walls, and walking the meandering marble streets today you will discover street musicians, chic boutiques, and restaurants. The city’s cathedral, once the Roman mausoleum, has a 60m high bell-tower which is worth climbing for the fantastic views of Split. Visit the ancient Temple of Jupiter and its crypt, located down what is reputed to be the world’s narrowest street. Near the city, more Roman ruins, Renaissance and medieval towns and a stark natural wilderness offer further interest.
The beating heart of Split is the Riva, one of Europe’s finest esplanades that extends the length of the city centre, and affords breath-taking views of the outlying islands. Being the main ferry port of the Adriatic, Split is an ideal base for a villa holiday if you wish to explore these beautiful Dalmatian islands and their beaches.
