Located close to the quiet village of Calonge, on the outskirts of Cala d'Or, this village is a small traditional Spanish community, with a few shops that provide the necessities.
Cala D'or was one of the first major tourist resorts in the East Coast of Mallorca with most of the buildings themed on traditional low level whitewashed Ibicencan style. Most of the Villas, Apartments and even Hotels had to stick with this theme.
Cala d'Or today is a modern purpose built resort that has grown from a small traditional Mallorcan fishing village. Over the years the resort has expanded, and now covers an area of over 4 km of small sandy coves and creeks. Although in all fairness this growth has for the most part been controlled, and the town still has the feeling of a small village with few, if any, high rise buildings.
Cala d'Or is an excellent spot for a beach holiday thanks to its impressive facilities and wonderful beaches. Huge fun is the mini ‘train' which runs along the roads for holidaymakers between the main resort and beaches. The town is also a great base for exploring some of the best natural and historical sightseeing that southeast Mallorca has to offer.
Many restaurants here offer similar, fairly typical menus, so it's worth browsing carefully to find the places offering more interesting fare. Highly recommended are Rucula Restaurant, where you can enjoy a Mediterranean lunch or dinner, and Port Petit Restaurant, where you can literally dine like royalty – King Juan Carlos has eaten here. In the adjacent village of Portocolom, the marvellous HPC Restaurant also offers a menu of excellent Mediterranean cuisine.
There is a large pedestrianized area with a wide range of shopping available during the summer months. For a more extensive shopping experience, the surrounding, larger towns, such as Santanyi, Felanitx and Campos are better suited.
