Apartment overview - owner's description
H’yem is approached from the Market Place through a private pedestrian lane that leads on to the banks of the River Coquet. On entering to the property you will find a central hallway leading to all the accommodation, which is on one level making it ideal for those with limited mobility or struggle with stairs. H’yem has full gas central heating and is fully equipped to an extremely high standard throughout.
The Entrance Hall has access to all of the rooms which include: A comfortable and spacious Dining Lounge with a feature log burning stove for the cooler months complete with exposed stonework (initial supply of logs included during Autumn/Winter). There is plenty of comfortable seating for four people with a stylish three seater settee and a two seater settee, wooden laminate flooring and window to the front of the property. There is a 32" LCD television and free Wi-fi internet access for your entertainment. The dining area in the corner of the Lounge has a dining table and four chairs.
The attractive modern Kitchen is extremely well equipped and fitted with a range of brand new wall and base units with wooden work surfaces. It has modern integrated appliances including an electric oven with gas hob and extractor hood, a microwave, fridge freezer, and integrated dishwasher and washing machine. A large window provides plenty of light and a door leads to the outside space/garden area with seating.
The Master Bedroom has a lovely double bed with matching bed side tables, a double wardrobe and large chest of drawers. There is plenty of storage space here for everything that you would like to bring with you for your holiday. The Second Bedroom has twin beds, a chest of drawers and hanging space for clothes. All beds will be made up prior to your arrival and a full set of towels is provided per person staying.
The newly fitted modern Bathroom has a panelled bath with electric shower over, wash hand basin, low level WC, tiled walls and flooring, vanity mirror. There is plenty of free on street parking available within close proximity of H’yem. As mentioned H’yem is suitable for guests with mobility problems, however there is one small step into the property and there is a short walk (approx. 20m) from the parking spaces to the property. One well behaved dog is welcome subject to agreement with our simple house rules.

This is an excellent property to stay in as a family, couple or on your own. Clean and well maintained, with almost everything you would need for a week's stay without having to bring your own things for the kitchen! The seating area outside is lovely, and people passing by were all friendly. We've stayed in one of the cottages a couple of doors down before, but Hy'em is better for our purposes. It was lovely having a combi boiler for the hot water so we didn't run out or have to have quick showers or baths to make sure there was enough water for everyone. Other positives for us were: powerful hairdryer, large towels (not those silly sized ones you quite often get); log burner (we had to make use of it even though it was July); gas hob (the oven is electric); nearby shops for all food, drink etc; enough space so were weren't under each others feet in the evenings; fast response times for the few queries we had. The only downside for me was not having a tumble dryer, but that is probably just me being picky - there is a washing line to use. We thoroughly recommend this place!
The cottage, is in a quite lane with no car access so is very quite but plenty of parking near by. Very clean and comfortable with all mod cons and if you don't feel like cooking a good choice of pubs and restaurants on your doorstep.
Its difficult to fully explain at how pleased we where with everything provided when staying for a week at Hyem, Rothbury/ Northumberland region and the booking agent - all totally superb. Our over-riding conclusion from the holiday was we definitely need to go back to both Hyem and Rothbury - and also tell as many others of the great accommodation and Northumberland in general.
Hyem proved the perfect accommodation for myself, partner (along with our bikes) and my elderly parents - lovely decor and bedding etc; we enjoyed the stove fire for a cosy feel in the evenings; and sitting out back with views of the church. Its an excellent location in the wonderful village of Rothbury - such a nice place - a perfect tonic for our busy city life - has everything we needed - particularly enjoyed the new Narrow Nick micro brewery pub - having breakfast at Tomlinsons cafe. Also Hyem was very close for walks along the banks of the beautiful River Coquet.
During our visit we managed many day trips: to the impressive Bamborough Castle and across the causeway to historic Lindisfarne (excellent coffee at Pilgrims cafe); Alnwick Castle and gardens; my parents also went to the incredible Cragside (National Trust) and said it was a highlight.
We cooked in Hyem on some nights and also went locally to the Queens Head for classic pub grub. We also ventured a little further out and where impressed with the dining at the Anglers Arms and the great fish restaurant at Amble, the Old Boathouse. A top tip for a lovely cafe is The Running Fox at Felton.
I managed to a couple of excellent road bike rides - so it proved a perfect area for that. And we also walked up The Cheviot - the highest mountain in the Cheviot massif - which proved wonderfully remote and wild wander.
So all in all - top marks for Hyem, the village Rothbury and the Northumberland region which has loads to do for all ages and abilities. We will be back.
