Whatever your interest Northumberland can accommodate; this historic county has amazing castles such as Bamburgh, Walkworth, Alnwick and Dunstanburgh to name a few; country houses such as Cragside, Wallington and Belsay offer fantastic insight into the great industrial revolutionists of the area , such as Lord Armstrong.
Rothbury is situated adjacent to Cragside House which was the home of Lord Armstrong and was the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity. Currently owned by the National Trust there is plenty to do for everyone. With one of the largest rock gardens in Europe Cragside House has an iron bridge, formal gardens, lakeside walks, adventure play area and labyrinth especially for the children.
Other National Trust properties in the area include Wallington, Dunstanburgh Castle, the Farne Islands and Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island.
A short journey from Rothbury you can find Alnwick Gardens and Alnwick Castle. The Castle is still the home of the Duke of Northumberland and has been used as a film location for films such as Harry Potter, Blackadder and Elizabeth.
The Northumberland coastline offers some fantastic sandy beaches such as Embleton and Alnmouth to either spend the day or simply have a leisurely walk along. Bamburgh Castle located near Seahouses offers a great insight into the turbulent history of Northumbria from medieval times to more recent history with Lord Armstrong's family.
Rothbury is situated on the outskirts of the Northumberland National Park and offers an excellent base in which to explore the beauty of the park. The National Park offers something for everyone whatever your interest. Walkers love this area because of the spectacular trails throughout the area.
Kielder Water is less than 30 miles away and has a range of activities including; walking trails, mountain biking trails, fishing, horse riding, water activities, wildlife and adventure activities. Whatever your preference Kielder is an ideal location for a daily excursion.

We booked at the last minute and were very pleased with the fast response and all the information that was emailed to us. We were told that the house would be ready for us earlier than the given entry time and a lovely selection of local bakery products was there for us on arrival. It certainly made us feel very welcome. The house was great, very well equipped, spacious and clean. The heating system was excellent but the supply of hot water for showers was a little limited. There was lots of information available about the local area in the house in addition to the information emailed to us about Rothbury. Rothbury is lovely little town with a good variety of independent shops as well as cafes and restaurants / pubs. There are a good walks from the house and in the local area. There a plenty of towns and places of interest within easy reach. We had a lovely break in River View and would definitely stay there or in one of the other apartments in the property again.

riverview is in a fantastic setting with beautiful views,it was lovely and peaceful.and there are many lovely places to visit in the area such as Alnwick Castle and gardens.and the lovely treehouse resturant not to be missed! How ever there are a few things in the property that needs attention.No shower in upstairs bathroom,although there is a fitting for one,so i thought i would have a bath but plug to small for plug hole and water drained away so no joy there!.Down stair bathroom no grap rail for bath(think of elderly guests please!) plus no bath mat for floor.A few hooks in bathroom would make things a little easier.Could some one please sort out the silly shower curtain it sticks to you when showering.There were some lighting problems in kitchen over cooker,and fridge kept filling with water in the bottom tray.Most of these are minor problems that can easily be put right.although reading a review fro 2014 i see grap rails and hooks we mentioned,but this has not been sorted out.How ever on the plus side our holiday was very nice and i would recommend it.M.Armes Norwich Nofolk. We had a great stay. the building and surrounding areas were just lovely. Our apartment was extremely clean & very well equipped. One small drawback was we had no phone service. Apparently it only worked if you were with Vodaphone.
We fell in love with the area and will certainly be going back.
