KALKAN a beautiful Mediterranean town sitting at the foot of the Taurus Mountains. It gently rises from the bay and can be reached on foot, by taxi boat or by taxi from Patara Prince. Kalkan is charming with brilliant blue crystal-clear sea, ancient history and warm traditional Turkish hospitality. Cobbled streets, lined with shops and boutiques wind their way down to the pretty harbour and small beach. Kalkan transforms at dusk as it begins to bustle with activity. An abundance of restaurants, many of them set on roof top terraces offer a culinary delight, with wonderful views over the bay.

PATARA BEACH with miles of golden sand features regularly in brochures as one of the Mediterraneans most beautiful beaches and was recently voted the 2nd best beach in Europe by The Telegraph. Entrance to the beach is through the ruins of the ancient city of Patara, with a triumphal gate, baths, a theatre and a few temples. At sunset the beach is closed as it is one of the few places in the world where endangered Loggerhead turtles come to lay their eggs.

KAPUTAS a lovely sandy beach is nestled at the foot of a striking mountain gorge. The water is always a brilliant turquoise blue. Kaputas Beach is about 4 miles from Patara Prince. Hop in a taxi or catch a dolomus from Kalkan.

KAS a town with life revolving around the town square and harbour with many restaurants and cafes to stop at and watch the world go by. On the sheer rock mountain wall above the town there are a number of Lycian rock tombs, which are illuminated at night.

SCUBA DIVING - the Mediterranean with its warm, calm, tide free seas with great visibility make this area ideal.

MOUNTING TREKKING in the mountains of Lycia offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the Taurus range.

PARAGLIDING tandem or solo take a trip to Kas where there is an excellent and well known paragliding centre.

HORSE RIDING - the ride begins at the stables in Patara and takes you along the river until you reach the beach, where you have a chance to cool off and have a swim. After this we continue our ride along the country tracks stopping for a while by a lagoon. As the horses tire we make our way back to Patara enjoying the beautiful views of Patara beach.

SAKLIKENT GORGE is the ideal place to visit if you are feeling especially hot. The gorge is 18km long and so steep and narrow that the sun does not penetrate, so the water is icy cold. The gorge is approached along a wooden boardwalk above the river and opens out to a series of wooden platforms suspended above the water, where you can buy and eat trout at one of the specialist restaurants.

KAYA KOY - Once a thriving Greek village, this town of over one thousand houses, two churches, fourteen chapels, and two schools, was completely deserted in 1923 when the 25,000 Greek inhabitants living there, along with more than a million other Greeks living throughout Turkey were repatriated to Greece through a massive government mandated population exchange between the two countries following the Greek war of independence. Since then, the village of Kayakoy, as it is called in Turkish, or Karmylassos, as it was called in Greek, which had been continually inhabited since at least the 13th century, has stood empty and crumbling, with only the breeze from the mountains and mist from the sea blowing through its empty houses and streets. A wonderful place steeped in history that touches you to the very soul.

XANTHOS a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the six principal cities of Lycia. Xanthos was the capital city of the Lycian Federation and its greatest city for most of Lycian history.

LETOON was the sacred cult centre of Lycia its most important sanctuary and was dedicated to the three national deities of Lycia - Leto and her twin children Apollo and Artemis.

CHURCH OF ST NICHOLAS - Lycias celebrity. St. Nicholas was a popular bishop at Myra in the 4th century AD, born in Patara between 260 and 280 AD, famous for his miracles and known for his kindness.

MYRA was a leading city of the Lycian unio n and surpassed Xanthos in early Byzantine times to become the capital city of Lycia.

TLOS best-known for its fortress-topped acropolis, with its rock-cut tomb-covered sides and its 360 degree panoramic views. As one of the six principal cities of Lycia and one of the most powerful.

SUNKEN CITY OF KEKOVA - along the shore of Kekova Island are Byzantine foundations and ruins, partly submerged in the sea - the Sunken City.

Many people love this Resort and apartment but they weren't really for us. This said, we still enjoyed our holiday (as we always do) and had a fabulous 3 weeks!

It was peak of Turkish school holidays, abnormally hot (mid-40s) even by Turkish standards, and at full occupancy for most of our stay, so main problem was lack of peace and privacy. We normally book more isolated places.

First impression was close proximity of properties, with 2-storey block directly in front of balcony and 2 storeys above apartment. Garden plot much smaller than expected, though neighbouring properties had none. Two cats are permanent residents on balcony (they don't come in) and, according to Guest Book, everyone keeps them fed and watered. Luckily, we're animal lovers but it could be a problem could be for some!

Lack of bottled water in fridge for tea or drink and, bearing in mind arrival time in early hours, no chance of getting any for some time did not go down well. We think provision of this should be mandatory.

Apartment itself clean and pleasant with decent-sized living space, and bedroom containing much-needed aircon unit. Bathroom houses shower cubicle at one end (described as double but be difficult to share!) but is otherwise tiny. Spent comfortable but short sleep on first night as woken by scraping of furniture from above but, thankfully, it didn't happen every night. NB: keep drying rack under balcony roof; someone above carelessly threw a cigarette butt down that landed on capri pants I had out and burned a hole in them! Sea view is partly obscured by Eagles Nest development to left below but would have been nice before that was built.

Unclear arrangement with Neslihan (cleaner). We understood she came weekly at some point so kept key in key safe so she could have access, but on first visit she simply left note written by her friend (she doesn't speak English) saying she'd been but we weren't there and to contact him to rearrange. We weren't impressed but rearranged for following week stressing we wouldn't be there but she should go ahead as planned. She did a good job but didn't indicate when she would next be back so I called again to arrange - most important thing was for us to have clean towels as washing by hand is no fun. Coincidentally, we were there when she next came and I helped her change bed (incidentally, no mattress or pillow protectors!) but with only a week left, I said she didn't need to come again other than to bring clean towels. I'd definitely swap dishwasher for a washing machine!

Lack of aircon in apartments opposite meant they opened their doors and sat right in front of us. We tried eating outside once but lack of privacy forced us in. I love to cook but after a couple of times it proved too challenging with only a wok, frying pan and two electric hotplates, largest of which took ages to heat up. No sign of saucepans or lids! Someone had broken the bread knife and we didn't feel inclined to replace it, though we did replace batteries in wall clock and remote control.

Resort itself is beautiful and views over Kalkan bay and colourful gardens are stunning. About 90% of guests are Turkish whereas we found Kalkan way too British! Shuttle bus is essential with about 320 steps down to pools (+ another 61 to sea level!) but waiting around 40+ degs, even for a few mins, is too much! Spent day at Infinity pool at top of resort, fabulous views but with few facilities it's neglected, and Kids Club behind is virtually derelict! Spent most time (when there) at Adult Pool or sunbathing platforms. Interestingly, many sunbeds had towels on them very early yet lay empty till late afternoon. One bed had same towel and magazine throughout our entire stay but we saw someone using it only once! You can hire mattresses at 10tl each per day but you can't use them at adult pool.

Had hire car in second week and went to Kaş, Kekova (hired private boat for 300tl (£60), Myra, Kaputaş Beach, Saklikent Gorge, Şelalesi Waterfall, Tlos, Patara Beach, Letoon, Xanthos. Highlights: Kekova and Patara Beach.

Dined at Jasmine Restaurant (Patara Prince), Doy Doy, Marleys, Sicilian Evening (Patara Prince), Korsan Fish Terrace, Nicholas Pansyon (Gelemiş), Gironda, Olive Garden, and for last 4 evenings at Adam's Restaurant (on road to Kaş) with delicous home grown food and free transport. Favourites: Doy Doy, Korsan, Nicholas Pansyon, and Adam's.

Be warned, you need to be fit in this resort as it is almost vertical. We knew and accepted this but others may not do their research. Apartment was more than acceptable although at the top of a very steep hill. On arrival the patio doors looked as though they have been forced or potentially damaged on purpose by previous incumbents. This was reported as soon as we got there and duly fixed by the owner.

However, we were left without a safe for two weeks as the one in the apartment was broken on arrival and it was not rectified during our stay. This left us feeling somewhat exposed as there has been a history of break-ins in and around Kalkan over the years (as with most resorts nowadays). This was not good. The safe was also of a flimsy nature and i am not sure what defence if any it would have put up if any nefarious creature wanted to take out the contents.

Also there was an issue with water cascading down from the flat above when showering or cleaning balcony floor. Didn't really bother me but girlfriend got a bit annoyed. Can only imagine this would damage the owners property long term if not rectified with the owner upstairs.

Kalkan is a great resort though and reminded us very much of old Turkey. My girlfriend and i have a policy of not going back anywhere twice, we have reavaluated that though as Kalkan is special.
Overall communications good with owner and Mehmet and they were keen to make sure we were happy, The big issue was the safe though and on a side note, no washing machine. An absolute must. Oh and tv is a waste of time as signal crap.

Reply from Samantha

it seems that the key to the safe was pushed in too far, the key was freed with little problem and is now working correctly and is secure. Patara prince resort has 24hr security & nobody other than holiday makers or owners are allowed into the resort which ensures 100% safety.
Many thanks for your review & im glad you enjoyed your stay.

I have just left the villa and have to say we extended our stay from 10 to 13 days as we loved it so much. If your visiting Kalkan staying in a villa is far better than a hotel and this villa had everything we needed (except a washing machine and a full length mirror) Martin was great in his communication and directions were amazing. The villa is stunning, tastefully decorated and having a BBQ is a plus! We enjoyed our own BBQ quite a few nights and the resort is simply stunning. The villa is at the top of the resort so walking down to the sunbathing platforms is easy enough on the way back dont even attempt it!! The dolmus arrives every 5 mins so this was a lifesaver! We hired a scooter here as the taxis in Kalkan can add up to quite a bit over the course of your stay.
The resort itself is beautiful but is let down on the food side as well as staff... Not enough of them and not attentive. We complained so much at the lack of service to the managers and they served us every time they saw us which was great but should never have happened. Asking staff where pools or facilities were was also pointless as they didnt seem to know anything! None the less the patara pool restaurant was good for snacks but be warned portion sizes in kalkan are huge!
We walked to town many times and found a few stunning restaurants! Salt n pepper, aubergine in particular were stunning! The food was stunning and the views from the restaurant to die for. Many others had recommended Doy Doy which we were not impressed with.
Alternative restaurant and El Fener were our favourite lunchtime places. Patara Beach and sunken city of Kekova are must see .. You will love it! We even did the Fetiye market, kayakoy and Olu Deniz lagoon tour which we loved! We managed to wrangle ourselves in with a tour guide around kayakoy too!
Neslihan the housekeeper was super friendly and helpful and always checked in on us when she was around.
We would definitely recommend the villa as it caters for almost every need and was great to come back to every night after dancing the night away at Club Karma!
You will not be disappointed at Patara Prince, the views are breathtaking, sunbathing platforms were fabulous and the shuttle boat a real plus!!

We had a brilliant 4week stay at 235 Patara Prince Villa. From the first contact with Martin (the owner) it has been seamlessly easy and relaxing. The apartment is very clean (and was cleaned every 3days during our stay) decorated very tastefully and well equipped. Kalkan is fantastic and there are plenty of day trips that are very easily organised through the many tour operators. It was incredibly good value for money and already have recommended to friends.
I would like to keep it a hidden gem all to myself.

Family from Astana, Russia Oct 2013

that was an amazing 16 days in kalkan. was affraid that it will be different from what we have seen on the pictures, but it was even better. the apartment was in the very quite area, we ve had so many lovely dinners with our family on this lovely terrace. the apartment complex is very clean, and cared by very nice staff of the Patara Prince Resort. i will defenitely come on my vacation in future and will recommend to all my friends. also we ve had a very nice leaning lady Neslihan, who showed us the good grocery stores, so our family would love to thank everyone who made our vacation amazing.

Kerry stayed May 2014: We are just back from our stay at Palm 235. My husband and I had a fabulous time and enjoyed every second of our holiday. We found the place exquisite and very comfortable for 2 people. The location is fantastic and the area has so much to offer. We found it very beneficial to have our own hire car as there are a wealth of historical sites (particular interest: Tlos, Saklikent gorge, Kaya koy) and beautiful beaches to visit (Patara and Kaputas). Also, we saw the cost of taxis and it is very expensive! The logistics of the holiday were seamless and it is so obvious that Martin is there to share the joy of Palm 235 rather than to just make money from renting out his holiday home. We also came back a few kilos heavier due to the outstanding restaurants in Kalkan (best Doy Doy - quite expensive... about 120 lira for a meal and 2 drinks each) and the cheap price of ice-cream (only 3 lira for a Magnum/Cornetto).

We really did have a lovely holiday, thanks. The apartment was fantastic and had everything we needed, from a comfortable bed, DVD player when it rained, and lovely pool facilities. Really enjoyed eating dinner on the balcony and watching the sun set, although feels like it was some time ago now... Back to reality! Cheers Zoe

We had a great holiday in Kalkan and the apartment was lovely. We went in October so a lot of the facilities at Patara Prince were closed, but it was still a very comfortable place to stay and in easy walking distance of the beautiful town of Kalkan.

You have tastefully decorated the apartment and left the homely welcome factor in there as well, which not many people achieve - well done. We have had a lovely relaxing holiday on our second visit to Kalkan. We have been to Doy Doy, excellent steaks, we also went to Adams, he collected us and bought us back, so over did the wine and brandy! Had a wonderful night, Turkish home cooking was wonderful and his daughters are delightful. Thank you Martin for all your help and meeting us. Shirley & Steve

Just got back from a relaxing week at Palm 235, it really was special for me and no flaws. I have and will continue to point out Patara to friends - I do totally recommend it! Thank you again and hope to return another time. Take care.

Firstly can I thank you for kindly finding me alternative flights when Aegean went into administration. The service both prior, during and after my holiday was exceptional, with extremely useful information to help make our holiday one to remember. Palm 235 is absolutely delightful having been lovingly refurbished and the interior design is stunning. Stewart and I spent many a happy hour on the balcony just chilling drinking wine and watching the cats Tabitha, Jerry and Rosie play on the balcony and enjoying the food and milk. There is everything in the villa you could want and we were delighted that Martin shared his holiday home with us. This is a place we would definitely come back to and will tell friends and family about Palm 235 and the lovely resort of Kalkan. This was our first time to Kalkan and we absolutely loved the place and will definitely return to this little gem. The gardens of Patara Prince are lovely to walk round and we enjoyed our time mainly at the infinity pool which we usually had to ourselves. The lower pools were usually very busy, so we chose the infinity pool most days. Kalkan town is a delight and the people are extremely friendly. Please use Martins phrase book which is in the safe as when you try to speak Turkish their eyes light up and its really appreciated. Kalkan at night comes alive and the rooftop restaurants are amazing. Our very favourite was Gironda. The area you sit for a pre dinner drink is wonderful. The food and the service second to none. Other restaurants we enjoyed were Doi Doi and Olive Garden. Another must for you holiday makers is a trip on one of the boats in the harbour, this is a great day out with a superb lunch, then fruit and cakes and tea in the afternoon. Its highly recommended and extremely reasonable for a full day out at sea. I hope you all enjoy your stay at the wonderful Palm 235. Kind regards Heather & Stewart

Missing Turkey already!! Thank you we had a lovely time.

Well what can I say, this has been a fantastic week, the weather has been great and just to be able to sit back and relax in this wonderful apartment has been perfect. We couldnt ask for more. We would highly recommend Palm 235 and Kalkan and hope to be back next year. Cheers and thank you for all your help.

Palm 235 was excellent value for money and exceeded expectation, even though I thought it would be fantastic! I have been recommending Palm 235, patara prince and kalkan to everyone. My overall holiday was totally excellent and I am in process of booking for next year - but for longer. Thank you.

Just returned from a very enjoyable stay at Palm 235, cannot comment on a lot of the facilities as we were out of season (end Nov) but we were very warm and comfortable in this tastefully decorated apartment with wonderful views. Excellent value for money and we would definitely recommend this apartment. Overall we would rate this as an excellent holiday property with helpful and informative customer service.

EXCELLENT appartment!! I would recommend to anyone, as there is something for everyone. BEAUTIFUL resort, very romantic, very relaxed atmosphere. Also enough close by for a family. Only very short boat ride to Kalkan town. V, cheap. Lovely restaurants, beautiful food, great sample of Turkish life in an excellent location. Lovely pools. Stayed here with friends in Summer, was still relativly quiet. Loved it. The bed in the bedroom is v. comfortable and if two of you dont mind the sofa bed it sleeps 4. I stayed with 3 others and had no probs at all. definatly recommend this! friendly and helpful owners too xx Thank You
