The Surrounding Area
Gümüºlük stands on the site of the ancient Carian city of Myndus whose seafront sections slid into the sea in some long-forgotten earthquake. Today these barely submerged remains are a magnet for snorkellers and underwater photographers. The land site is yet to be fully excavated, but traces of antiquity can be spotted in empty fields, sounding an evocative echo of a distant age. Country walks around Gümüºlük are invigorating and rewarding, especially in spring and early summer when riotous displays of wild flowers cast their rural spell and mingle their fragrance with the smell of the sea.

'Rabbit Island', situated in the middle of the bay and accessible by a partially sunken causeway, offers a magnificent panorama and, yes, a glimpse of rabbits scurrying around.

Gümüºlük's current attraction is the plethora of fine fish and seafood restaurants, a 'must' of a visit to the region. Another of its many attributes is the serenity of its nights.

Yalikavak impresses with its combination of alluring traditional charm and a sense of recognition of the importance of contemporary comforts desired by today's discerning visitor. This is what makes Yalikavak attractive to those who care for both, the old and the new.

The town is neat and tidy, and some antiquated buildings have undergone sensitive restoration and conversation to modern use, one being an old water cistern converted to a gallery displaying the works of well-known local and national painters. Another is a disused olive oil processing plant which has been refurbished and turned into an attractive souvenir shop.

Active civic groups work in concert with the municipality to promote the town and to protect it from depredation by the unscrupulous, so far achieving very positive results: the environment is cared for, services are timely and the hotels and restaurants are among the best in region.

The coastal town of Turgutreis is named to honour a native son, the distinguished Ottoman Admiral Turgut Reis known in European naval lore as Dragut. Today it is a bustling municipality with many shops and restaurants and good beaches.

A scattering of islands to the West marks one of the sea lanes of antiquity where many an ancient ship foundered on barely submerged rocks. Here some of the first underwater archeological discoveries were made which led to the foundation of the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archeology. With its challenging, unpredictable winds and currents the area is a paradise for experienced.

Bodrum was the city of Halikarnassos in ancient times, an important port in the center of the old world, home to one of the wonders of the ancient world, the Mausoleum. Modern Bodrum is to Turkey, what Cannes is to the South of France. It is everything and anything you want it to be, historic, interesting, relaxing, lively and within 10 minutes of unspoiled countryside.

An imposing Crusader Castle overlooks the harbor and the International Marina. When you have had enough of the many harbor-side bars, restaurants and historical sights, there is still a whole peninsula to explore. Mountains and green valleys, traditional villages and isolated beaches, all within view of the warm clear waters of the Aegean Sea.

The are Weekly Market days in area:

Monday - Güvercinlik
Tuesday - Bodrum (fabrics and clothing)
Wednesday - Gümüslük and Ortakent
Thursday - Bodrum (food) and Yalikavak
Friday - Bodrum (food) and Bitez

My family and I spent 2 weeks at Royal Blue. The owners were exceptionally helpful throughout. A lovely detailed brochure from the owners was available and offered valuable information. The apartment is beautiful and being a Penthouse apartment, the views are not to be missed, especially the sunsets. We had a wonderful holiday. The apartment offers everything you want, particularly those nights in when you dont fancy eating out, everything is at hand that you could need and, a very well presented kitchen. All finer details have been covered and very carefully thought through by the owners. Absolute luxury. There are so many places to visit and are easily accessible from Royal Blue. Thank you to Hilly and John for everything.

Royal Blue Penthouse was a wonderful place to stay. The apartment itself is brand spanking new, contained all we needed and the view over the hills across to the ocean was spectacular particularly at sunset. There is lots of living space within the apartment and on the top deck, and the pool in the complex was a welcome relief from the afternoon heat. Hilly, John & Avina made us very welcome and were very helpful in providing information about the area and in organising our airport transfer. It's a long steep walk up the hill to the apartment from the bus stop and a car would have been convenient.
Owner reply:

There is now a dolmus (bus) service which goes up the hill to Royal Blue.

The apartment is very comfortably furnished and has everything you could need. It has a super terrace to sit out on in the evenings to watch the beautiful sunsets over the sea. The roof terrace is a great sun trap but maybe a little too hot at times!

We love Turkey!! The apartment was great and was just as discribed. The location was peaceful and only a short bus ride from Bodrum. The weather was hot and the pool just wonderful. We had some lovely meals in Gumusluk and Yalikavak and the markets were great fun. Thank you for a wonderful holiday. Well be back!

Friendly contacts both in the UK and Turkey, and no 'hidden extras' despite the fact that we also needed baby facilities.
