Dalyan is a charming small town located about 30 minutes from Dalaman Airport
If you prefer getting away from the major tourist crowds, then you will appreciate the quiet ambiance of Dalyan. Comparatively untouched by mass development, Dalyan is the pearl of the Lycian region situated on the beautiful river which connects the unspoilt Lake Koycegiz with the Mediterranean Sea.
You will be able to enjoy your meals by the riverside or in the village. There are bars and restaurants in the village where you can relax and observe local life.
During the day, you can stroll the stone streets, enjoy a walk along the riverside, cycle in the town centre, shop in the varied shops selling crafts, jewellery, carpets and clothing or at the local market or just wander to any of the restaurants and bars for a refreshing pomegranate juice or chilled beer. The town itself is flat and easy to get around.
At night Dalyan adopts another persona, as you ramble through the streets you hear the sound of jazz mixed in with traditional Turkish music. The smells from the many restaurants entice your senses and with a choice of lots of restaurants you need never eat in the same place twice.
The al-fresco dining experience is enhanced by views of the river, rock tombs, sky and twinkling lights of the town. Unlike other coastal resorts, you will not be exposed to a boisterous night scene in Dalyan as the nightlife here is fun and relaxed, yet low-key. Nor will you find yourself being hassled by restaurateurs or shop vendors. So sit back and enjoy the warmth of the renowned Turkish hospitality.
With all that it has to offer, it is no surprise that Dalyan has a growing number of perennial visitors who say that Dalyan is the only holiday destination they would choose to visit repeatedly.
Relax or explore? The choice is yours!
You may decide to spend your days in Dalyan doing nothing more than relaxing by the pool, with the odd trip into town for a spot of shopping. If this is the case, then a car is not essential. However, there is no doubt that hiring a vehicle for a day or two will allow you to make the most of this fascinating area by exploring further afield.
If you have a keen interest in history then you will find plenty to occupy you in this area visit. the ruins of the ancient city of Caunos, which include a theatre dating from the 2nd century BC, Roman Baths, temple of Apollo, agora and market place. It is accessible by boat or on foot and you can also see the carved Lycian tombs in the limestone mountain which are illuminated at night making the river a spectacular place to enjoy a meal taking in these stunning views.
If you like the feel of sand between your toes then Iztuzu Beach with its 6km long shore will be an unforgettable experience and is within easy reach from Dalyan Centre. The beach is in the top 10 of the worlds most famous beaches, as being the sanctuary of the Caretta-Carettas also known as loggerhead turtles which lay their eggs in the clean fine sand. This is why it is commonly called "turtle beach" . With its unspoilt nature protected by strict regulations, Iztuzu has remained a sleepy heaven.
There are very regular local dolmus (buses) that will take you to the beach for a small local charge. You can also reach the beach by public boat from the river and enjoy a beautiful, relaxing sail of about 40 mins along the 7 miles long Dalyan Delta, with its narrow waterways, surrounded by reed beds, and if you are lucky see the turtles, again for just a small local charge.
If you prefer to let someone else do the driving for you, then why not take advantage of the range of day trips on offer through local tour companies.
There are many excursions including 12 islands boat trip, jeep safari, quad biking, fishing, moonlight boat trip with BBQ set on the Lake, Caunos, car hire, bicycle hire and many, many more.
The Turquoise coast
Because of the exquisite blue waters of the Western Mediterranean, this famous coastline was named the Turquoise Coastline. It offers sunny skies, warm translucent seas and hidden treasures of rock-cut Lycian tombs, ruined Byzantine monasteries, ancient Roman baths and towering Greek amphitheaters but to name a few. It is rich in history and no territory was so closely connected with Greece in mythology as Lycia. There are around 20 major Lycian sites still remaining today. To mention but a few, Xanthos (one of the 6 principal cities of Lycia), Letoon (the sacred cult centre of Lycia which include 3 side-by-side temples to Leto, Artemis and Apollo), Kekova-Simena (an area with beautiful scenery and underwater ruins) and Tlos (best known for its fortress-topped acropolis, with its rock-cut tomb-covered sides and its 360 degree panoramic views.
