Location

The Maenam viewpoint offers the best views over the Koh Samui island. It is staggering, and you will see the stunning, jungle interior and out to the azure sea and Ko Pha-Ngan.

You really should spend a day in Thailand's beautiful Angthong National Park, a protected area to exotic marine life. You can kayak to explore the beautiful natural landscape and snorkel in the clear blue water. Just imagine floating in the warm waters of the Gulf of Thailand and looking at the intoxicating beauty of this magical island and its glorious underwater world. You can motor to Koh Wao, a cluster of three islands creating a shallow and sheltered bay, glide past snow-white beaches, luscious nature and hidden lagoons.

Reached by a causeway, sits the famous 12 metre high, Big Buddha Shrine, Samui's most well-known landmark. It can be seen from several kilometres away. Inside the surrounding temple are many different shrines, smaller ornate Buddhas and also a market selling a range of lucky charms, spices, food stalls and plenty of fortune-tellers. Near the Big Buddha, Wat Plai Laem is a colourful Buddhist Temple with very ornate decor. It is built on the water and is a living and active temple where devotees come and pay homage to the Guanyin and the Buddha. It is interesting to see a temple still in use.

The Secret Buddha Garden is a private sculpture park atop Pom Mountain. It is not actually a temple. It was built by a retired farmer called Khun Nim Thongsuk and is a collection of statues including Buddas, animals and the founder's family. It is a tricky climb, so make sure you have sensible shoes.

The Thai ‘katoeys' or ladyboys put on elaborate cabaret shows at Chaweng Beach and look so feminine. It can be very hard to tell that they are boys with all the make-up and costumes!

Chaweng Beach offers fabulous beach parties and has many nightclubs, bars, water parks, amusement parks and so on. It is very lively.

Bophut's Fisherman's Village is a beautiful walking street of hipster cafes and endless boutique shops. It was once home to a thriving fishing community, hence the name. There are numerous alleys running through, giving the village a charming old look and feel. The vibe is super chilled, and it backs straight onto Bophut Beach.

Koh Tao Island, close by, is the scuba diving destination choice of Thailand with perfect white-sand beaches ringing the hilly island, vibrant coral reefs, exciting and colourful sea creatures, nodding palm trees and glittering blue seas. It is worth a visit as is Koh Phangan.

The south of Koh Samui showcases the island's natural beauty and has wonderful, tropical mountain walks, hidden waterfalls, spectacular beaches and a butterfly farm.
