Things to do
Besides relaxing on the beach or at The Beach House, there are a lot of other things you can do in the area. The manager can arrange day trips or longer tours for you.
Around Hikkaduwa there are surf spots with some of the best surf in the country in season (October-April), there are lakes, forests, waterfalls, paddy fields, Buddhist temples, silk factories, turtle sanctuaries and much more. It is a garden of Eden with fireflies, butterflies and beautiful birds. This enigmatic island nation is a land of beautful people, ancient history, delicious food, silk, saphires, tea, spices and art.
Fishemen still launch there traditional outrigger boats from the beach in front of the Beach House . You can help them pull in their nets.
There is a custom-made guide for guests in The Beach House with recommended things to do and see on day trips.
Our stay in HIkkaduwa Beach house was outstanding. The house is located right on the beach with direct ocean access, a 5-minute walk along the beach to Hikkaduwa center, and a 30 minute drive to Galle. Comfortable stay for our family and friends.
The facility is very clean and tastefully decorated. Spectacular sea views, large terrace overlooking the beach offers ample seating for meals or relaxing in either sun or shade. We fell asleep each night and awoke each morning to the sound of the waves rolling up onto the beach.
Even better yet was the warm, Srilankian hospitality of manager Mahinda and house keeper Chanada. They took care to ensure that our every need was met, and served as expert guides to the local area and further. We were free to lunch or dine in any of the local restaurants, but we much preferred to stay in and enjoy the delicious meals they prepared for us, especially the fresh seafood excellently prepared Srilankian style by Chanada, on the terrace overlooking the water.
Our stay at Hikkaduwa Beach house is among our most memorable vacations and we definitely hope to return.

We had a fantastic 9 night stay at the beach house - absolutely fantastic location and one of the best holidays I've ever had. Nothing quite like relaxing in the garden and watching the sun go down with a cold beer!

Please, more safety!
In first day our stay we were robbed. Missing 2 mobile phone. Climbed through the window while we were on the veranda. The front fence is very flimsy. Locals broke his New Year's Eve. Area - 4 - this is beacaus permanent local's party at the fence sometimes annoying. Small ants everywhere and in the bathroom living one big serious cockroach. But, it is normal for the jungle! If you want to enjoy the indescribably beautiful sunsets while listening to the ocean and do not pay attention to the little troubles - strongly recommend! ...And now there's a jaffles-iron - enjoy!

The Beach House was exactly as advertised and in such a beautiful location. The sound of the waves each night and fresh sea air was amazing. The family went from being scared on night 1 (of some creepy crawlys) to loving the experience by day 3. Excellent support from locals assigned to clean and manage the property. Would highly recommend.

The courtesy and efficiency of both the owner and his staff are wonderful a pleasure to work with, including the excellent pick up and return to the Colombo Airport. And of course the lovely front veranda, the grassy garden between house and the ocean, and last but certainly not least the direct access to the ocean and long beach were wonderful. I would also praise the staff at the neighboring Cinnamon Garden Hotel where I ate often, and which arranged for a terrific daily massage on the veranda. I would, however, add a few cautions. The house fronts onto a very busy road (day and night) and the single pane glass windows including right above the main bed make this quite a challenge for a light sleeper. There is also a serious absence of interior lighting and seating space, which makes the prospect of evening reading a bit of a challenge. Its also important to know that the surf here is very powerful, making it less than ideal for swimming. But if youre looking for a well-managed, lovely traditional home with a private garden and gorgeous sea sounds and views, this is a property seriously worth considering.
Thank you for your kind review. I would like to respond to a couple of your cautions. The busy road you refer to is the Galle road that runs the entire coast from Colombo to Galle and on to Matara. It is difficult to escape this road if you want to stay on the beach anywhere along this long stretch of beautiful coastline. The house does not front directly onto this road but is down a short beach access road with another property between the back of the Beach House and the Galle road. There is occasional road noise but as many of our guests have said - they don't notice it with the sound of the sea out front. The position of the house is clearly indicated on a Google map on the Beach House site - SriLankaBeachHouse.com . The sea/surf changes with the weather - some days it is rough, some days it is calm and some days it is in between. Surfers do come to Hikkaduwa to surf on the good waves on the coral reefs down the beach - the main reason we bought and renovated the beach house. We rent it out to help make it self sustainable and provide an income for Mahinda, Chandana and their family who manage and maintain the house.

Sharon, South Africa (May 2009)Absolutely idyllic! Serviced daily, cheerfully furnished with all necessary mod cons and hot water, right next to tranquil Cinnamon Gardens hotel, which has great local and western meals, step out onto the palm-lined beach on one side and hire a tuk tuk on the other. Huge sheltered verandah to languish on and a manager who organises transport any and everywhere. Travel guides also provided. Beach houses really don't come much more enticing than this!
Nigel, Dubai (March 2009)I have visited Sri Lanka three times and this is by far the nicest place I have stayed in. It is in the perfect location - right on the beach in a very private area but just a few minute's walk away from the central beachfront area which offers a range of restaurants and funky beach bars. The house is amazing - pretty small but with a wonderful varandah and garden with a perfect view of the waves beyond the palm trees. There is a charming little hotel right next door that serves great food in a relaxed setting and even delivers right to your verandah! It is the perfect chilled beach holiday - with everything you could want at your fingertips.
Chris, Bangalore (May 2009)From the time of arriving at The Beach House after been collected by the organised taxi service until the time we left we could not have asked for a better place to recharge our batteries. Life in Bangalore lends itself to needing a break to a place like the Beach House. A fully equipped spot with aircons, huge comfortable beds and a massive veranda for those afternoon beers. Stepping from the veranda onto the beach and within walking distance of the beach bar strip makes you feel part of the action but just far enough away to enjoy a peaceful strip of the beach. What was great for us was the fact that by just hiring a scooter we could explore the jungle in a few minutes and visit a few monasteries, we even landed up having lunch with the high priest on the day the war ended with the Tamil Tigers.
From Dalouka Jack, Dubai (May 2009)My family and I spent six blissful days in the Beach House at Hikkaduwa earlier this month. The house is perfect for a beachy holiday with very effective air conditioning units and fans in all the bedrooms, good sunflower-head showers, an outdoor shower, and a well-equipped kitchen area. Our favourite area of the house was definitely the large veranda where we chilled out day and night, whether it was sunny or stormy. We loved the decor of the house, with large wooden four-poster beds, colourful kitchen and a homely dining area. There is a CD player, so take your music (there are some good mixed CDs provided), but no TV - good idea to take a laptop and some Disney's if you have kids. The beach infront of the house is clean, quiet and beautiful. We saw a few children playing and some old fishermen walking but that was about it.Food wise, there are little grocery stores for the basics but imported stuff can be pricey. We took cereal, coffee and baked beans, next time we'll also take snacky food like biccies and crisps. Fresh produce is available from markets. We didn't bother cooking big meals as we ate out most of the time. The Cinnamon Gardens hotel and restaurant next door to the Beach House is perfect for when you don't want to venture far. (Lunch for family of four big eaters approx $15)Pick up and dro p off to airport went without a hitch and the guy looking after the house was very helpful and accessible. We were there at the start of the monsoon season, which was amazing. The weather was warm but bearable and the storms were fantastic. The highlight of our trip was sitting on the veranda in the evening, listening to music, drinking good cheap beer, watching lightning light up the beach and wave crests while the heavens chucked it down. Perfect.
About the owner
We are a family of 4 and live in Cape Town. We travel to Sri Lanka regularly to surf, relax and immerse ourselves in the local culture. After several trips to the beautiful island we decided to buy and renovate a sturdy old beach house with tons of character in Hikkaduwa. We have decided to open it up to other families and surfers visiting Hikkaduwa to help generate some income for the local community and make it self-sustainable.
