Holiday information - Santa Pola
Santa Pola is a delightful Spanish town just 10 kilometres from Alicante international airport, 16 kilometres from Alicante city, 28 kilometres from Elche which is well-known for its 200,000 palm trees and shoe industry, and 33 kilometres from the larger beach resort of Torrevieja which is well-known for its beautiful salt lakes, restaurants and things to do. There are buses from Alicante city and Alicante airport to Santa Pola which run about every 30 minutes and take 35 to 45 minutes.

Alongside tourism, Santa Pola is also home to a major salt works and the harbour has the largest fleet of fishing boats of any port on the Mediterranean Sea. Santa Pola is one of the most important fishing ports in the Mediterranean in Spain with a large and active fishing fleet.

The town has several wonderful beaches, including over 4km of fine sand and crystalline water. At the Playa Lisa beach you can walk out to sea for some distance and the water still only reaches knee-height! On one side of the port is the Playa de Levante which is a fine stretch of sandy beach by the town hall and tourist information office. On the other side is the Gran Playa sandy beach, which is another popular spot for sunbathing and safe swimming.

The breeze coming off the shimmering crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean at Santa Pola has made the beach resort a top destination for practising water sports such as surfing, kayaking, stand-up paddle, sailing and kitesurfing.

Closer to the town centre are the best-known beaches by the marina with a lovely seaside promenade and close to the main Avenida Vicente Blasco Ibanez. This is a great place to charter a boat for sailing or to book one of the organised trips around the bay or over to the beautiful island of Tabarca. The island belongs to the province of Alicante. This island was once used as a headquarters by the Berber pirates, but nowadays it is a Marine Reserve, abundant with flora and fauna on both the island and in the surrounding waters. While fishing is a major part of the port’s activities, you will also see some fine sailing boats and motor yachts.

National Park - Las Salinas, next to the town, is a marshland area that is a protected Natural Park and declared an area of special importance for wild birds, including Flamingos and stilt birds.

Santa Pola is ideal for many nautical sports and air based pursuits. It is common to see wind surfing, sailing, swimming, fishing, jet skiing and paragliding being practised along the coast. Heading away from the beach, you can stroll up to the old fisherman’s quarter at the top of town at one of its highest points.

The town boasts a helpful tourist office, a fortress castle, a palm park, an aquarium and an interesting range of cultural and historic museums. There is a daily fish market during the week and a busy street market on a Monday and Saturday morning. There is a marked walking route alongside the rural beaches at the souther end of Santa Pola, and a 7 kilometre promenade which connects all of the sandy beaches in the central area, a large marina, a wonderful promenade, a selection of museums, a cinema and the Pola Park, a large theme park with many fairs and games.

Cuisine in Santa Pola
Santa Pola offers a wide range of restaurants, mainly derived from the sea but also including Italians, fine cuisine and your local fast food chains. Its salazones are dried fish and are tasty appetisers, as are the fresh gambas or shrimps. A local fish stew, caldero santapoler is something you have to try. Arroz negro, rice with squid ink and Arroz a la marinera or sailor's rice are both local favourites. Some of the popular local catches are Anglerfish and Cuttlefish as well as fresh octopus. Local bakeries churn out ample sweets and cakes.

Throughout the year, Santa Pola has a number of important festivities in which locals and tourists become involved. The year starts with a colourful and noisy fiesta to break the winter monotony. In March and April come the Mig Any or half-year pageants of the Moors and Christians. In June there is a Romeria or pilgrimage to the hermitage on the cape and just before mid-summer, on July 16th, the local sailors pay tribute to their patron saint, La Vigen del Carmen. The highlight of the year in Santa Pola has to be between 1st and 8th September in honour of La Virgen de Loreto. There are street processions, parades and giant parties. The year finishes on December 10th with the arrival of the Mother of God by sea.
