San Bartolomé village is nestled at the foot of the highest peak on the island, a volcanic crater some 36km west from Gran Canaria Airport. Its district stretches from the mountains in the centre all the way to the south coast, with high and winding roads making the ride from the airport last some 50 minutes. Other locations in the Las Palmas region can be easily reached within 30 minutes or less.
San Bartolomé's lush greenery and mountain terrain will challenge even the most experienced of hikers and cyclists. The south's natural sandy coastline is a paradise for beach-loungers and sun worshippers. Make a splash at the themed and public water parks in the region, popular with young families year round. One of the region's must-sees include the stunning sand dunes of Maspalomas, with its palm tree reserve. Formed during the Ice Age, their wide systems stretch under the Atlantic, creating a spectacular coastline of golden, fine sand beaches along the south. The hiking trails over the dunes are marked, with kiosks along the coast providing refreshing beverages and snacks.
There are many authentic restaurants in the area and the villages along the G-60 road stretching from the coast to the mountain areas are scattered with charming and atmospheric eateries. San Bartolomé also has many upscale restaurants where you can enjoy authentic Canarian dishes as well as international cuisines. Numerous historical sites can be found scattered around the island, especially in Barranco de Balos. Located between the industrial town of Arenaga and San Bartolomé, it can be reached using routes GC-65 from the mountains, or GC-1 from the coast.
