Village house overview - owner's description

Architect renovated house in village 20 min. S of Granada. Secluded patio, private pool and roof terrace. 4 bedrooms. Views of the Sierra Nevada. The Alhambra 25 minutes away. Unspoilt village.

Cozvijar is a quiet village in the Lecrin Valley south of Granada. The locals are mostly farmers tending their plots of olive trees, orange and lemon trees and grapes. Many households produce their own wine – Mosto – that is available from December onwards. The nearby village of Conchar holds a Mosto Festival each New Years day serving Mosto and barbecued meats and sausages in the village square.
Granada offers Tapas bars, shopping, the Alhambra, the Albaicin, the cave houses of Sacromente, a bustling nightlife and is only 20 minutes via the easily accessible motorway. The same motorway south allows easy access to the coast - the Costa Tropical - through the stunning scenery of the gorge of the Guadalfeo River as well as access to the Alpujarras – the southern facing slopes of the Sierra Nevada range. A car is essential. For summer driving it must have air-conditioning and must have enough power to get you up some very steep inclines if you want to explore the Sierra Nevada.

Casa Lucia - our house in Spain
Casa Lucia is our house in Spain. We find it very hard to come home even after the shortest stay. The village is tranquil and the snails pace of life is catching. The house is very peaceful and relaxing. Before we renovated the house it was a ruin. We have rented villas in France and Spain for many years so we incorporated all the best features of our past experience to ensure that being on holiday was as comfortable and easy as it could be. The shaded external dining area in the patio is close to the kitchen making alfresco dining simple and hassle free. At night the pool and patio lighting create a superb atmosphere for eating out under the starlit sky.
Cozvijar Fiesta – the population of the village swells in the first week of August for the Annual Fiesta. It is impossible to describe the experience of the Fiesta other than to say that anyone staying for Fiesta week has to enjoy partying and needs to have enough stamina to be able to survive with little sleep for 5 days!
In the village there are 2 bread shops (1 does wonderful pastries), 2 supermercados (not supermarkets but sell everything self service shops) that sell all foods including fresh meat, vegetable, cheese, jamon etc, a fish shop, an iron mongers, a pharmacy, a bank (but no cash machine!), a phone box and 2 bars that do wonderful tapas (free with each drink). White vans crawl through the narrow streets blowing their horns to announce the fruit, vegetables, fish or fresh milk from the churn that they have for sale. All of these are 5 minutes walk from the house.
The house is cool in the summer by traditional Moorish air conditioning supplemented by ceiling fans.

What to do in Andalucia
The pool, the patio and the shade area allow those who wish to chill out. For the more energetic hill walking, bird watching, sailing, horse riding, mountain biking, skiing (November till April), paragliding are just some of the outdoor activities available either from the village or within 30-45 minutes. Granada is only 20 minutes away and offers the Alhambra and other fantastic architectural or historic sites. At night Granada buzzes with life and is great to walk through to enjoy the people, the atmosphere and the tapas bars. Part of the enjoyment of holidays is exploring and discovering new things. Every time we stay in Casa Lucia with discover something new in Cozvijar, Granada or elsewhere in Andalucia. Part of the enjoyment of a holiday is stumbling across the unexpected (last summer I found waterfalls and caves full of stalactites). This description is therefore more of a taster than a comprehensive description of all that is available. Explore and be prepared to be amazed and delighted.

We really enjoyed our stay at Casa Lucia, the property is very well appointed and decorated. It provided a perfect base for Granada and the Alhambra, and the surrounding areas eg Alpujarra.

The outdoor pool area in the evening provides a lovely setting to enjoy a drink or meal.

I would thoroughly recommend this property.

From North Thamesmead, United Kingdom Jul 2009

The property was excellent, the pool was fantastic. Very private and self contained. The locals were very friendly, as previously mentioned a working knowledge of Spanish is useful however we managed to muddle through with atrocious accents a phrase book and plenty of smiling from all involved. Our thanks to Jackie and Simon for making us feel so welcome and for all their help. We left after the first night of fiesta and would have loved to have seen the whole weekend of it. Maybe another year. We had a brilliant holiday either relaxing by the pool or on day trips out exploring the surrounding area. Many thanks :)

"The property is very nice indeed. Its actually both nicer and larger than it appears in the photos on the website. It is very well equipped indeed with good quality items and the owner has added many personal touches which means that its more like staying in someones home than a holiday villa. I must say the owner is very trusting to leave so many personal items there. We have a villa in Florida and had many personal items stolen, but perhaps thats a cultural difference between European and US guests? The underfloor heating makes the house very warm and cosy even when its not so warm outside. We did had a problem with the boiler but Martin the local agent came promptly and reset it with the button and then it was fine. The pool is beautiful but it was too cold to use in October. The property also has a Sky DigiBox so we were able to get UK TV channels which is really nice. My 5-year old son summed it up best when he said "The only thing wrong with this house is that it doesnt have the internet". (He was missing cbbc.co.uk and lego.com!) But we did experience a lot of noise from the building site next door. Every weekday morning at 8am prompt the drilling and hammering started. Ive never known a building that required so much drilling and hammering! Perhaps they built it wrong and now need to fix it? And the building site is attached (terraced) to the house so it does go through the house. But we cant complain, the owner did warn us about that. The only other issue is the parking there. The streets are very narrow and you can get blocked in, especially with the road closed to cars past the building site next door. One other thing: The directions say leave the motorway at junction 152. Its 153 actually. And the directions to the property currently dont really work in that the road is closed due to the building site next door. You need to go around the block to get to the property. Not a problem, but it caused us a bit of hassle trying to find it at 11pm and finding that the directions are no longer valid (with the road closed). But it only cost us an extra 15 mins of driving around the village. Really, the village is slow small that it only takes 15 mins to drive around all of it! One more tip for other visitors: Orgiva is lovely, Lanjarron is horrible! And Pampaneira and Capileira are lovely too, but take a little while to get to. "

Reply from Paul

The major part of the construction next door has been finished and the crane that previously blocked the road has now been removed. Ashley was quite right about the exit number on the motorway. 153 is now correct but things in Spain can change without warning!Parking in the street in front of our house is not a good ideas as the streets are very narrow. There is always parking in the nearby Plaza Nueva. You can park anywhere as long as you do not obstruct someones driveway or garage door entrance. The village is very small and the Spanish are not possessive about the space in front of their property.

This property is definatly for lovers of real spain.
Is set in a lovely village with friendly locals and surrounded by intersting towns and wonderful scenery.
The villa its self was large and airy and even though the temperature 35c - 40c inside was lovely and cool.
Its a real home from home everything you need and much more.

Great villa!

Villa Azure is a fantastic place to stay, I can thoroughly recommend it. It's in a perfect position, just 5-10 minutes walk from the centre and harbour for all the departing boat trips.
It's peaceful and quiet in the evening, with the bars and restaurants just out of earshot.
The setting is beautiful, with the mountain back drop and lemon groves.
The facilities are fantastic with a pool which is cleaned daily, 4 en suite bedrooms all with air con, and all mod cons like washing machine, dishwasher, tv etc.
The owners were extremely helpful in offering advice and suggesting excursions and restaurants, and were a pleasure to deal with.
We were a family of 4 adults and 3 children and had a great time, but this would be perfect for just adults too. Thanks, Keith.

Casa Lucia is the perfect destination - something for everyone! We stayed for 12 days in August with our teenage daughter and her friend and had the most relaxing time. The house is beautiful, well thought out and superbly equipped. The pool was a welcome escape from the heat of the day and the sun beds were very comfortable and enabled the completion of many books!! We loved having evening drinks on the rooftop terrace taking in the fantastic view and eating al fresco by the lit pool. We liked being in a village and attempting to communicate with the very friendly locals. We experienced a fiesta during our stay which was an experience not to be forgotten!! It was brilliant to be so near to Granada and we regularly popped in for breakfast and a wander and also visited in the evening for tapas. Visiting the Alhambra is a must! We also enjoyed the beach at La Herradura and some delicious seafood from the shacks on the beach. We ate in Durcal and at the nearby Bodega but there are so many places we didnt have time to explore so we would love to return. Thanks for having us. Sarah and John, Portsmouth UK August 2013

David Warrens family plus another family (8 people) rented 11-8-2012 to 25-8-2012and sent this by email: We had a fabulous holiday and thought Casa Lucia absolutely perfect! Although there were 8 of us, the house never felt overcrowded and provided plenty of space to escape to when we felt the need, the roof terrace being the favourite place! The house was welcoming and beautifully furnished. The surrounding area was beautiful, and being so close to Granda, was an added bonus. We felt that in all the considerations you name we would rate Casa Lucia 5 out of 5. We would definitely recommend it to a friend, and hope to return in the not too distant future.

Richard from Stourbridge stayed at Casa Lucia with his family from 30th June 2012 to 14th July 2012. He reluctantly gave a review (a man of few words!): "Hi Paul, I dont normally respond to follows up, its just my way. We had a lovely holiday and the Villa was just what we needed. Well appointed and in a good location for us. Yours, Richard " My local agent reported they had a great time and loved the house. Frequently guests comment that the house surpasses their expectations and that the website pictures do not do it justice. It is very hard to take good pictures of rooms. Paul Coathup (Owner)

Note from the owner: The renovation of the property next door is nearly completed. The crane of blocking the road and the builder’s material has now been removed from the road. They are working inside the building. When we were there over New Year there was little noise from the builders

I am the owner. It is our family house in Spain; my youngest daughter chose the ruin; my eldest son was the English architect; my other son injected his energy and passion while my wife supported me in my quixotic venture. The result is village house renovated to give a restful and luxurious house in Spain for our family, our friends and ourselves. It is not in a tourist area so gives a glimpse into rural Andalucia.. You can read on the sun-beds then slide into the pool to cool off. You can explore the gorges and valleys cut by the water from the mountains or you can walk in the Sierra Nevada or the Alpujaras. You can bird-watch from the roof terrace (crag martins, house martins, swallows, pallid swifts and alpine swifts all swoop by) or whale-watch in the Straits of Gibraltar. You can ski in the winter yet the Mediterranean – the Costa Tropical - is only 40 minutes away. You can explore the Moorish heritage of Granada, Cordoba and Malaga. Or you can laze about and watch the comings and goings of village life. There are no other reviews because so far only our friends and family have stayed. They have all rebooked! I hope all who stay in our house enjoy the experience as much as we do.
