A beginner's guide to renting a holiday home in Jaén Province

Jaén Province has huge significance when it comes to Spain’s history between the Moors of Granada and the Christians of Castile and Leon who battled for over seven centuries. Remains of their legacy can still be seen today but nowadays the region is renowned for being one of the most peaceful in Andalucia and the main producer of olive oil in Spain, where its pristine landscape flourishes with olive groves, orange trees and a scattering of historic gems.

Jaén’s capital city of the same name boasts a number of ancient monuments. Among them are the 13th century Castle of Santa Catalina and the Arab baths from the Moorish period. But the most breath-taking is Jaén Cathedral with its impressive Renaissance architecture and immense size. The cities Ubeda and Baeza are a must-see. Nestled in the heart of the province, both towns are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Step back in time as you walk the narrow, cobbled streets past the Renaissance buildings. Like most of this rural region, the towns are surrounding by olive groves, yielding an authentic sense of serenity when combined with the Renaissance architecture.

Alcala la Real is a relatively small town in the south of the province, known mostly for the Moorish fort, Fortaleza de La Mota, perched atop of a cliff overlooking the town. With an abundance of stunning relics found inside and a breath-taking panoramic view of the surrounding area from atop the tower, it is a must see for history buffs.

Sierra de Cazorla, mountain range in the north of the province is blessed with a rich natural environment, wildlife and the Guadalquivir and Borosa rivers chiseling their way through the rocky terrain. Awaken your desire for adventure and try hiking, climbing, river rafting, canoeing or kayaking across this heavenly landscape.
