La Joya (The Jewel), Lecrin Valley, Granada

Overview

A romantic escape for two (can accommodate up to 4 with double sofabed for short stays). Equidistant (20 mins) between the historic centre of Granada/Alhambra Palace and the coves and beaches of the Costa Tropical. The cottage is located among the pretty white village and orange groves of the beautiful Lecrin Valley with its sub-tropical micro-climate. The sunny roof terrace enjoys lovely views south, over the Rio Santo gorge and West to the Sierra.

The house has many lovingly restored features such as the wood and rush ceiling in the bedroom and the old iron balcony covered with brilliantly coloured pots of geraniums - which was a feature from the original building. There are also many romantic extras such as low lighting in the tower staircase, concealed lights within Moorish Arches and the tiny blue star skylight high in the bedroom wall.

In addition to the traditional features - there are also many invisible contemporary comforts such as underfloor heating in winter, a good shower with plenty of hot water, a washing machine/tumble dryer tucked away in a cupboard, and a well equipped kitchen with new appliances.

The Village & Outings Further Afield
There are no cars in the old Barrio Bajo of Albunuelas, although donkeys pass the ground floor windows of the house each day on their way to work in the orange and olive groves. Freshly baked bread and fish from the coast can be bought each day from hawkers in the square below the church. There are bars restaurants and village shops within walking distance and the village square has a weekly market on Thursdays.

While traditional Spanish rural life is preserved in Albunuelas, the village is also right on the doorstep of the historic city of Granada, which offers the stunning Alhambra Palace (one of the most beautiful buildings in the world) elegant plazas, fountains, wonderful tapas bars, Moorish bath houses and a vibrant souk in the Moroccan quarter.

The Sierra Nevada Ski resort and the Costa Tropical are both also within easy reach.

The Valley
There are several nice swimming pool/restaurants in nearby villages. Guided walks are available which start from the village and can take in items of historical interest (Moorish, Roman, Iberian) as well as the flora and fauna of the valley. Ideal for relaxation and perfect for walkers or bird watchers. The epic GR7 walk from Algeciras to Istanbul passes the door and one of the GR7 markers can be seen upon the wall. The lush valley just beyond the house is rich with oranges, almonds, grapes, figs, pomegranates, persimmons, and prickly pears. In the spring the air is perfumed with orange and almond blossom. The higher slopes of the gorge abound with olives and the scent of wild herbs

We booked our honeymoon in La Joya in the summer. The cottage is really romantic and beautifully decorated. We loved the garden and sitting on the terrace watching the eagles at sunset and counting shooting stars. One night we saw fifteen. The village is very peaceful and surrounded by the most beautiful scenery. We enjoyed visiting Granada and the Alhambra and one day we did a spectacular drive over the Sierra de Albunuelas and down the back road to the coast - with stunning mountain views all the way. The house was well-equipped, comfortable and just as described. We loved it.
La Joya was a lovely cottage in a very nice place. Walks in the surrounding countryside are lovely. the locals are very nice and willing to help if you speak a bit of Spanish. Take careful note of what the Key-holders tell you on arrival about where shops and bars are as this is real Spain and sometimes there is very little indication as to where places are, no signs and all doorways hung with curtains. Very glad that we went.
We spent one week at La Joya in Albunuelas and had a wonderful relaxing holiday. The house is very comfortable, spotlessly clean and just what we expected, with a good shower and a very comfortable bed. The view from the roof terrace is wonderful. This is an excellent area for walking and it is not necessary to have a car to reach the village. We did the whole trip by public transport and enjoyed travelling with the friendly locals. The only downside was having to drag the suitcases up the hill to the bus stop!
We've had a really lovely holiday. Two weeks wasn't long enough! The house is great and has everything you could possibly need. We will miss the nights stargazing with a cold beer on the terrace and the peace and quiet. We would love to come back again!Sharon Mike & Poppy
Thank you for a wonderful week - as ever too short. The house is beautiful - it has been a rare occasion when I've stayed somewhere decorated as I'd decorate a place of my own. The Valley and nearby sights are also treasures. We have taken in Cabo de Gato, the Alhambra and the Alpujarras and hope to return for more. Thank you again -Mark and Narina
I've had a GREAT ten days here. Love the village, the people and the mule traffic...Pepe has plied me with oranges and Anne & Nick have been so helpful...Annie

What a wonderful week in the Lecrin Valley and as luck would have it we were here for Fiesta Week. Woke up the first morning to the sound of what we thought was quarry blasting - it wasn't, just the fireworks (rocket bangs) signalling the start of festivities. Felt very privileged to be here at this time & will always have fond memories of the Sangria party in Barrio Bajo Square, the dance until 3.00am (& beyond) and the 'guy' letting the rockets off by hand! The house has been a great base for exploring the Valley and beyond - not to be missed are the Alhambra, Alpujarras and the carp swimming in the Beznar Dam.The Sun terrace is magnificent with the views down the gorge and a chance to spot an eagle (or 2). A great way to spend our 20th anniversary.Arwel and Alison
How time flies when you are in the Valley for 2 weeks. Unbelievable! We've truly enjoyed the beautiful region, the costas, the house, the food and meeting the local people - for us Northerners its such a delight to wake up with sunshine every day. I feel like we've only had the chance to get a glimpse of the Valley, the Alpujarras, Granada and the playas. Time was just too short to visit all the places we planned in advance. The house has been a lovely base to start from! Thank you very much - we'd love to come back some time.Henry & Judith (& Jolle, Brent, Jorse & Luke)- Holland

About the owner
Our knowledge of the area has evolved from the experience of first buying & restoring a cottage in Granada’s beautiful ‘Valle de Lecrin’. During our many trips to the Granada area to oversee the project, we discovered Guejar Sierra, in the Sierra Nevada National Park. Only 20 mins East of Granada and the Alhambra Palace, Guejar’s flower draped balconies, mountain views and great little tapas bars make it a perfect base for year-round outdoor activity (walking, mountain-biking, kayaking or swimming in mountain pools in the summer & skiing in the Sierra Nevada ski resort in the winter). Eventually 'Spanish Holiday Cottages' evolved from these visits and we now enjoy welcoming visitors to the portfolio of properties which we look after in the area. El Ladero Grande is Denise's own apartment in Guejar Sierra - but if that one is not available then we are able to offer you a choice of others nearby. No matter whether your tastes run to skiing Spain's most southerly ski resort, hiking or biking in the Sierras, discovering the local culture and cuisine, exploring historic Granada, improving your Spanish, learning a new skill such as flamenco dancing, or simply enjoying lunch by a lovely pool – we are happy to advise and help you to make the most of your stay. Whatever holiday experience you wish to enjoy in Granada – please get in touch.
