Location

Situated on the hillside in the midst of the beautiful Andalusian countryside, Villa Bougainvillea enjoys a peaceful setting with a number of trails nearby to explore the wonderful landscape. A short drive away, the charming village of Gaucin is a typical rural settlement, with winding streets and traditional whitewashed houses adorned with colourful pots and flowers. Spend the morning exploring the medieval layout and stop by the ancient ruins at the Castillo del Aguila to enjoy a panoramic view over the surrounding area. Despite its size, Gaucin has a number of notable restaurants where you can sample some of the region's delicious cuisine. La Fructosa is a locally-owned affair, whilst Michelin-star Platero & Co boasts a wonderful terrace and weekly changing menu offering up wonderful seasonal plates inspired by fresh produce from the mountains nearby.

Whilst charming in itself, Gaucin sits on the western side of the magnificent Serrania de Ronda and is also regarded as the gateway to the national park. Filled with a wonderful array of flora and fauna, the vast natural area has plenty of well-marked trails that are easily accessible and invite you to explore the diverse landscape. Opt for a more challenging hike and follow a route up to one of the mountain summits, or head just 45 minutes to the north to visit the town of Ronda. An important cultural centre during Islamic rule, the historic settlement is divided by a dramatic gorge, which you can admire from the Puente Nueve that towers a staggering 120m above the canyon floor. Take a walk through the cobbled streets to discover the religious architecture and visit the elegantly decorated Iglesia de Santa Maria La Mayor before heading to the town square, where you can sit with a drink and soak up the laid-back atmosphere.

Los Alcornocales national park sits just a short drive to the west, with a succession of rugged mountains and sloping hills that play host to the largest mass of cork oak on the Iberian Peninsula. The area is popular with hikers and bird watchers, or for a more adventurous day out, you can choose from a selection of outdoor activities such as mountaineering or horseback riding.

Alternatively, for those looking to enjoy Andalucia's wonderful coastline, the beach is less than an hour's drive away, making it easy to spend the day beside the sea. La Chullera is the closest beach, whilst slightly to the north, the popular San Pedro Playa offers a long stretch of golden sand. There are various options for water sports, as well as a handful of chiringuitos where you can escape the heat and enjoy a lunchtime snack or ice cream.
