Apartment overview - owner's description

Luxurious two bedroom, two bathroom penthouse apartment on new golden mile with roof terrace and marble interior in beautiful wooded beach front estate with five pools and six tennis courts

Situated just ten minutes in the Estapona direction from prestigious Puerto Banus, near Marbella, Costa Del Sol, Spain, El Presidente is a beach front very quiet estate of white luxury apartments and villas in the ornate Moorish Andalucian style, well away from the main road and set in exceptional park-like tropical grounds of palm trees and lawns with five pools, and tennis courts.

The estate is based on the famous Alhambra gardens in Grenada, with many reflecting pools and fountains. Each area of the complex of apartments and villas is served by it’s own garden and smaller swimming pool (five in total, one heated in Winter) plus there is a huge magnificent main swimming pool in free form shape, set in lawns with an island and bridge in the middle. All pool areas are supplied with lounges.

There are four tennis courts, two paddle (short) tennis courts, and for golfers, a practice driving range set in the woods beside the apartment. Wifi Internet available free near the office.

You will find the nearby Roberto’s Beach a short walk down the road beside the apartment building, and at the other end of El presidente is another beach with two beach bar/restaurants. Here you will find sun lounges available, with nearby activities including water-sports. For children there is a lovely play areas with swings, slides, see-saws and climbing-frames, plus a football pitch beside Roberto's beach!

Along the beach beside the El Presidente complex are three of our local chiringuitos (beach bar /restaurants), “Roberto’s”, “Pepes” and “Matas Verdes”, open for lunchtime and evening (in the summer) drinks and meals - truly wonderful places to relax, sit and gaze out to the sea, often with a glimpse of Gibraltar and Morocco.
If you take the road opposite our apartment then turn right, you will go around the tennis courts and turn left, and you will find Andalucia Car Rental plus many restaurants within walking distance (Thai, Chinese, Spanish and English) along that side of the main road, including the Robin Hood pub. There is also a very small supermarket for fresh bread and basic stuff, a hairdresser, money machine and telephone box.

There are two much bigger supermarkets on the other side of the main road towards Estapona called “Mercado” and “Supersol” (Supersol is the best) but we prefer to shop at the incredible El Cortes Inglis department store, beside the main road in Puerto Banus- we feel that the supermarket they have is the best we have found worldwide. You will find rubbish bins on the roadside close to the apartment, which are emptied daily.

Around the area
The Marbella region of Andalucia’s Costa del Sol is centered around the town of Marbella and it’s main port, Puerto Banus, and is renowned as a particularly prestigious resort area on the coast between the mountains and the beautiful beaches in the southern-most part of Spain.

Close by the beach are expensive developments of villas and apartments, while the valleys running up to the mountains are filled with beautiful golf courses.

There are over 30 golf courses in the nearby area, one of them just five minutes away, and several tennis ranches in the valleys. Ask us for more golf information.

Marbella town itself has often been described as the St Tropez of Spain, and has a historical centre of quaint little lanes and shady marble paved squares full of pavement cafes, as well as exceptional shopping, and with all major designers well represented. Above the beautiful sandy beach, the promenade here is the place to see and be seen.

Ten minutes by car from the apartment, Puerto Banus is based around a harbour full of the world’s most exotic yachts, and the waterfront is lined with lively restaurants and bars where you can often spot the rich and famous who holiday in this area. The town is renowned for it’s nightlife, and you can even do your shopping up to 2am!

Day Trips
Within day trip range are Seville, Cordoba, Jerez, Cadiz, Gibraltar, Malaga and Nerja, and with an overnight stay, even winter skiing in the Sierra Nevada mountains. A 45 minute drive and an hour on the ferry even takes you to Morocco’s Tangier in North Africa!

Have a drink or a meal in these places:
Anywhere on the Puerto Banus marina waterfront, and watch the millionaires plus their yachts and cars. Antonio’s is a favourite, but expensive.
Go to La Pesquera in the fountain square in Marbella old town, for the wonderful bar tapas.

Visit: Mijas, a wonderful hill town. (¾ hour), Rhonda, for the lovely town and the drive. (3/4 hour), and Estapona, for the harbour, old town and lovely beach. (20 mins).

Go to Granada to see the Alhambra Palace, but book by phone as soon as possible. (2 hours)

Visit Gibraltar to see the apes on the mountain. (30 minutes)
and If you have time, Seville, Jerez and Cordoba (each about 1.5 to 2 hours) are well worth a visit also.

Being as far south as you can get in mainland Europe and so close to North Africa, the weather is reliably rain free and very hot in summer, and most people say that the shoulder seasons, being a little cooler and thus more comfortable, are especially nice- and travel to the area (and golf) is particularly popular at these times.

Had a lovely stay at El Presidente during late September. The property itself is great. Lots of space, light, in good condition and with a great balcony (complete with BBQ) and roof terrace. The pool is a stones throw away and was empty at this time of year, so great for a nice relaxing swim.

The location however isnt as good. The nearby beach is 10 mins walk away but isnt fantastic, and not great for swimming due to lots of stones. There are some local shops and restaurants nearby, but they are mostly aimed at expats. So if youre looking for something more authentically Spanish then you will struggle.

The apartment is however within easy reach by car of Puerto Banos and other nearby towns, and a little further afield you have lovely towns like Ronda to explore.

Overall we had a lovely 10 days, and would recommend the apartment if youre looking for a relaxing time in a lovely space. If youre looking for somewhere with lots of activities and night-life however then you maybe want to look elsewhere.

Thanks for a generally excellent review! We are wondering, however, if you found the second (eastern) beach on the property, slightly further away, where the sand is much nicer? And if our visitors had gone beyond the main road, we are sure they would have found all the bars, resturants and nightlife they could desire, albeit mostly for ex'pats. For a really authentic Spanish atmosphere one only has to visit our nearest towns Cancelada or San Pedro de Alcantara, both about ten minutes by car- you will see almost no tourists there.

The apartment was very large and spacious, but quite "well worn". The shutters to the balcony were almost impossible to close, and so were the drawers in the bedrooms, and there was a certain stale smell in the apartment. Also the spiral staircase up to the (very small) rooftop terrace was so narrow and windy that one needed both hands to get up and down ( alas no chance of carrying breakfast/dinner, a wineglass etc)The beds were hard, a minus for me, but it might be a plus for others!

On the positive side: The apartment was clean, very well equipped, and nicely furnished. Everything worked and the balcony was nice and large, and lovely to have breakfast on in the morning sun! It was also very nice to see the cupboards stocked ( from previous customers, but that was no problem for us!) with coffee, pasta, salt, pepper etc ( even suntan lotions)

Since this review the shutters have been fixed and other maintenance issues are being worked on, and there is no stale smell- maybe it had been empty for a while? Unfortunately, we can do nothing about the spiral staircase, which is narrow. We take our breakfast up there every day, as the view is so nice, but it does need a little dexterity! The roof terrace holds a table and four chairs for eating at, and two loungers for very private sunbathing, all have cushions.. Richard

The apartment was very spacious for a 2 bedroom rental with plenty of room for all. The kitchen was a very good size and well equiped, and the living room was very comfortable. The master bedroom was huge and spacious with lots of storage and hangers in the wardrobe! Both bathrooms we ample in size.
Due to the extreme / bad weather with constant rain that caused flood conditions in the area we did not get a chance to use the terrace off the lounge, this did look very good and in better weather would be lovely. We did use the roof terrace a couple of times which gives panoramic views and afternoon sun.
Unfortunatly, the tennis courts were flooded and unplayable even when the rain stopped, and we had to go elsewhere to play tennis. Most disappointing of all, for my 11yr old son was the fact that the heated swimming pool just in front of the apartment ( and the reason we booked to stay here in Decemeber ) was drained of water and had some work taking place on it. We had not been advised prior to our arrival that this pool would be out of action, so it was a shock and major disappointment to all of us.
In summertime I can imagine that this will be a great place to stay, it has good unheated swimming pools, and the tennis/paddle facilities looked good, it is close to the beach and there are a couple of beach bars aslo. There are plenty of restaurants on both sides of the major A7 road which are well within walking distance, which offer a large variety of different food choices.

Of the five pools, one is heated during winter, but it's not the closest pool so not sure if renter found the heated pool? Closest swimming pool repair has now been completed, and it's perfect.

From Washington, United Kingdom Dec 2008

This property exceeded my expectations it has everything you would want as a family or a single traveller like me, very comfortable and very clean with all the household gadgets including a dishwasher, close to shops and restuarants serving every variety of food, the grounds of this complex are very beautiful with lots of water fountains and constantly cared for by the gardeners, I arrived before Christmas and the weather was great, lovely and sunny and very warm, One of the beach cafes was open over the xmas time and you could sit out on the beach with a drink and have a meal, although not a swimmer the five pools looked excellent, clean and very inviting two of the pools were heated.

We were pleasently suprised to walk in and find such a nice appartment, modern, cosy, well decorated, nice and spaceous. The grounds were kept immaculate, but the only downside was that a dog had messed on the grass just outside our appartment and it literally sat there for the whole week, not a pleasent sight to look at each time we left the appartment, even though the gardeners had come round and cut the grass, it still sat there. But overall a lovely place to stay in and i would definately recommend to friends and family.

Hello Richard and Christine Sorry to read that you had an accident in Spain and hope you are on the mend Richard. We had a lovely week in the apartment it is really spacious and cool isnt it.Just right for the hot weather. The grounds are superb, especially the fountains. It was 26 degrees while we were there and blue sky all the way. We really enjoyed the swimming pools and also swam in the sea at Estapona and the local beach. We didnt hire a car, so used public transport which was easy and cheap. We went to Ronda for the day and San Pedro which also had a great beach. We really found it cold when we arrived back home.I suppose Spring is on the way in NZ?but we have the winter approaching. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to visit that part of the Costa for the first time. All Best Wishes to you Both Bryan and Diana Goodall

Christine From Penrith, Cumbria, UK, in Apr 12, 2015 We have just returned from a wonderful holiday staying in the Marbella area. The apartment was beautiful and had everything we could have wished for. We were right next to one of five pools and it was heated so needless to say we were in it every day. The apartment was close to the sea and lots of really great restaurants. We hired a car and visited lots of places and being Easter we came upon some amazing parades where they were carrying the saints through the streets it was a sight to behold. Thank you so much Richard and Christine for a truly memorable holiday.

The apartment has been owned as our shared personal holiday home by the same group of English people since we brought it in 2000.. We love it being a very spacious residential apartment rather than being in a group of holiday homes, and becasue of the tree lined gardens and fountains and the choice of pools, and the nearby undeveloped beach. We we dont seek to make a profit from renting- mostly we rent it out to friends when we are not using it to help cover the high running costs, and so it does not remain empty we deliberately charge a very low rent for this quality of property.
