Es Mercadal (Mercidal meaning marketplace in Catalan) is a small market town and district in the heart of Menorca. Rustic houses dotted along pretty narrow streets in the medieval town centre make it perhaps one of the most charming and historic resorts in the area. Renting one of our holiday homes in Es Mercadal will give you easy access to the island's wilder, unspoiled countryside, where families and couples can enjoy some undisturbed peace.
On the outskirts of town is the majestic mountain El Toro, rising 354m above sea level. It is the highest point of the island and home to a 13th century church and shrine of the Virgin Mary. An ancient statue resembling the one in Rio de Janeiro can be seen here, keeping watch over the surrounding landscape. Today the sanctuary is run by Franciscan nuns. From the peak, take in postcard-perfect views of rural Menorca, where you can enjoy a clear view of the island.
Other local hotspots and popular with young families is the island's water sports centre and fishing village of Fornells on the island's north coast. Take a boat trip here to discover the resorts hidden coves and stunning natural wonders. The village is also known for its traditional cakes and biscuits, where those with a sweet tooth can enjoy the many cafés selling delicious almond macaroons and local pastries.
The beaches in Menorca's north are quieter than the south due to the fact that there are fewer resorts. They get less sunshine but they’re equally as stunning and perfect for sailing, windsurfing and boating. The most popular tourist destination in this area is the family-friendly holiday resort, Arenal d'en Castell, where you'll find many small and picturesque beaches dotted along the coastline. During the evenings enjoy a cocktail here as you watch the sun set.
