Desert Springs Golf Resort, Almanzora, Almeria

Overview

This long lost part of Andalucia boasts the best winter climate in Spain, making it an attractive all year round destination for golf, tennis and water sports. It is set in a dramatic desert landscape of rocks, arroyos, springs, and cactus, which border and punctuate the lush green fairways. Our villa is located in a small cluster overlooking the 1st and 18th fairways. Only 20 mins drive from the old Moorish town of Mojacar and 2 ½ hours drive from the ski slopes of the Sierra Nevada and with Almeria International Airport a mere 40 minute drive away.

The Indiana course is the first desert course in Europe and has been built to the full USGA specifications and quality standards of the now famous desert courses of Arizona and California. It presents unforgettable views of the rugged mountain ranges and golf of such a dramatic nature that it can be said to have taken not only desert golf but also golf in general in this part of Spain to a new level of excellence.

This villa is not just suitable for golfing enthusiasts. It is also ideal for families looking for a relaxing holiday in a superb environment. Visitors can relax and enjoy all the facilities of Desert Springs. The clubhouse boasts a very fine restaurant and lounge bar. The Crocodile Club adjacent the clubhouse, which is in an elevated location over-looking the entire course, offers a less formal dining environment, pool bar and Tennis courts.

The Almanzora Region
There is no other climate like it; for this is Europe’s only desert, more akin to Arizona and New Mexico than anywhere else. This is really the Wild West! For this was the setting of many famous films of that genre, including Once upon a Time in the West and A Fistful of Dollars. The film set is now a great tourist attraction.

It experiences the most sunshine in Europe, averaging 9 hours per day and the least rainfall, 7 ½ inches per year. It also has the warmest winter climate in mainland Europe, average max. day-time 20ºC (67ºF) October to March.

The Almanzora beaches and countryside in the south east corner of Spain have escaped the weight of over development and mass tourism. There is no high rise development here and there never will be as the area is protected by strict coastal, environmental and planning laws. The local people, whose principal employment is fishing (the giant prawns landed in nearby Garrucha are famous throughout Spain) and agriculture, not tourism, are still warm and friendly to visitors.

The Villa
This luxurious golf villa has air-conditioning, heating and all of the rooms have ceiling fans. It is furnished to a high standard to compliment the rustic theme.

The bright and airy living/dining room contains 2 comfortable sofas, Satellite TV + surround sound, DVD and CD player. The dining area has a table with 6 chairs. The décor is fashionable with bright coloured prints on the walls to contrast with the soft colour scheme. The room has a wonderful view of the back garden and patio doors lead on to a terrace with a built in barbeque. The terrace has patio furniture offering alfresco dining for 6.

The villa has a fully equipped kitchen. Appliances include a fitted oven, hob, microwave, fridge freezer, dishwasher, toaster and kettle. There is a separate utility room with a washing machine/tumble dryer.

There are three bedrooms which comprise one double and one twin and a single with an additional pull-out, comfortably sleeping five adults (6 max.). All the bedrooms have fitted wardrobes and in addition have bedside cabinets. The master double bedroom (with king-size bed which can be made into two single beds with 1 weeks notice) has en-suite bathroom with walk in shower. It also has patio doors leading to a 1st floor large private solarium measuring approximately 35m² (with 3 sun loungers). The solarium has breathtaking panoramic views of the golf course with the mountains in the background.

There is a fully tiled main bathroom, with bath, shower, toilet and bidet. There is a separate cloakroom/utility on the ground floor. Extra care should be taken with small children and the elderly as all floors are tiled.

A very nice, well equiped villa in a small and quiet gated community with a lovely pool. Desert Springs is absolute heaven and a wonderful get away from it all destination whether or not you take advantage of the fabulous golf course and facilities on hand.

We thought the setting was great, the pool just right for us with a young family and the accommodation fine. Air con fixed unit in one room failed but was repaired promptly by the owner when notified.

The Desert Springs resort is in a good location 10 mins by car to beaches, and makes the most of the surreal desert landscape in the area. We family holiday quite often at high end golf resorts and it compared well - it is certainly different. We visited in high summer and the resort was relatively deserted - and partly thanks to an almost complete pause on further building at the resort at present - blissful peace and quiet. Needless to say the weather was great! There is a range of local beaches, which are good though not spectacular. At the closest Villaricos end in the north it is quiet and very Spanish, although as one goes down to Mojacar Playa and beyond it gradually gets busier and more touristy. All but voyeurs should avoid Vera Playa for the naturists... Echo Rock is in an established small community on the resort. The pool is adequate for the houses, and is in the slightly rustic style of the resort. There is a range of Spanish/ English/other nationality owners and guests. The garden at and all around this house is a delight and is very well maintained. The interior keeps relatively cool and is clean and well appointed. The ceiling fans are very welcome, as is the aircon! The terrace off the upstairs bedroom is indeed enormous, and there are views across to the mountains and golf course greenery from up there. Other facilities at the resort are good eg tennis, gym. The Crocodile Club, El Torrente at the clubhouse are good though expensive for what they are - but this is expected. The golf course itself is very good and was very quiet when we were there as are the extensive practice facilities.

It was a wonderfully peaceful location convenient for beaches, mountains and a waterpark. The villa itself was comfortable and well equipped. Our children enjoyed the pool arrangement where they could meet other children. The pool was never crowded. The staff at the resort were helpful and friendly. There were lots of activities available on the site for those wanting more.

Very nice property, set in a lovely cluster of villas. The pool associated with these villas was rarely used by anyone other than ourselves. The owner has kept us informed continually on everything we needed to know. Would highly recommend this property.

This was our second visit to Desert Springs and I am not even a golfer! My golfing friens thought the course was one of the best they had played. The villa was like home from home with excellent amenities, air conditioning, roof terrace, etc. Overall I would raet the villa and complex as superb.
