Things to do
This villa is suitable for families, friends and couples who will appreciate the tranquility and wonderful views of the surrounding countryside but there is also a wide range of activities nearby for all of the family, including all the opportunities offered at the coast.

Within 30 minutes:
• lots of local walks including to: the village, with ancient Moorish buildings and water cisterns dating from 15th century; the bat cave and water spring; the surrounding hills and vineyards
• the lovely historical town of Velez Malaga and outside it, El Ingenio modern shopping mall with hypermarket, department store, various shops, bars and restaurants, cinema and fitness centre
• the beach and coastal resort of Torre del Mar with a 4Km expanse of beach having walking/jogging route and exercise stations for all ages, along the way
• Lake Vinuela, water-park, go-karting, golf, tennis

Under an hour:
• huge, amazing caves at Nerja with prehistoric remains
• beaches galore – from Malaga to the Costa Tropical which is characterised by cliff-backed beaches and offers scuba diving, wind-surfing, kite surfing, para-gliding, jet-ski, fishing, nudism etc
• hot springs just outside the historical town of Alhama de Granada, set in rolling hills between Caniilas de Aceituno and Granada. The town has an old Moorish quarter and within the area are lakes and a large reservoir at Bermejeles (where we have a Cortijo - please ask if you are interested in seeing this) In this area you can arrange accompanied mountain and gorge walking, mountain biking, and a variety of adventurous activities.
• Malaga with its old city centre, Picasso Museum, castle and many other sights

1-2 hours:
• Swimming at Lake Bermejeles 15mins from Alhama de Granada (see above)
• Granada with its famous Alhambra Palace, Cathedral and gypsy flamenco district
• the ancient town of Ronda with beautiful buildings, famous bullring and a spectacular gorge
• flamingos at Fuente de las Piedras

Further afield:
• Gibraltar, Seville, and Cordoba

There are many festivals throughout the year in Andalucia, including, in the village: Dia del Morcilla (free sausage and beer), San Isidro (where the ladies wear beautiful flamenco dresses and there is free paella and beer) and the 3 day August Fiesta; at Easter, impressive processions in Velez Malaga and the re-enactment of the Passion in Rio Gordo; in July, the International Jazz Festival at Almunecar to name but a few.

Of course you can always go nowhere…in spring listen to hoopoe, frogs and nightingales, find wild orchids and irises, smell the orange blossom on the terraces beneath the villa or gaze out on to the mountain-sides, covered with grape, almond, citrus and avocados. In summer, you may prefer just to swim in the pool, sunbathe, or sit in the shade of the carob tree, hear the goats and sheep, with their bells, as they meander across the hillsides and watch shooting stars by night.
If you enjoy nature, bird watching, photography, painting or writing, then the world is your oyster.

All in all, if you want peace and tranquility, with things to do close at hand, this is the place for you!

Please note that the villa is accessed via a municipal country road after leaving the main Velez to Canillas road. The last section however is private. The final 200m is unsurfaced and may deteriorate after heavy rains. Only once in 20 years has it been necessary for guests to park above the villa, but be aware.

Large Group from Wolverhampton, United Kingdom Dec 2016

It has taken us so long to write our review because we went through a phase of coming to grips with the reality of getting back home (cold and rainy England.

Bajo La Maroma is awesome. Our crew comprised of six people (2 families) , that is 4 adults and two children. The villa was very clean and tidy, evrything was in place and ready for use. It was very comfortable and the outdoors was really good. We were there in December so we were warned that weather might not be good (we had no idea what they were on about). The weather was lovely, although in the evening it would get very mild. The mountainous surroundings is very scenic, we went for a drive around and the roads and views are just amazing.

The locals are very helpful and kind, we made a few friends who hooked us up with firewood and a few other basics. We had a fire every evening and it was really good. In the morning we would wake up to a warm sunrise and we were having breakfast by the poolside. Malaga wasn't very far so we did our shopping there on a couple of occassions (their Lidl I'd very good)

We would definately recommend a visit to the caves in Nerja and also to the gorgeous town of Ronda. For us Bajo La Maroma was a good base for staying even if we had to travel during the day to go and see other places it was always good to know that at the end of the day we were going to chat the night away by the fireplace.

We didn't get to see the chameleons but all the while I had the feeling that they could see us.

Bajo La Maroma is definitely value for money. I'd want to go back and stay there. Give it a go and you will not be disappointed.

Thank-you Keresia, for your lovely review. I have to admit I was afraid you may be cold at night if you come from a centrally heated house in UK, but for sure, the fire gives off lots of heat! For me, being in the hills of Canillas de Aceituno, is just a thing apart - a chance to get away from all the usual, and get in touch with nature. I hope you managed to get up to the white village also and try some of the local cuisine? Hope to see you again!

Family from Swansea, United Kingdom May 2016

What a fantastic 9 days we recently spent at Bajo La Maroma, spacious and clean set in an amazing location with mountains as its backdrop. The pictures do not do it justice. The pool was very welcoming when you needed to have a cool down, we also made use of the barbeque which I have to say cooks very fast. The villa has ideal seating positions in the porch to sit in the shade when needed , and was a great area when eating your evening meals outside or having an early morning coffee.
This area of Spain is always a pleasure to visit, Sheila's villa has been our best stay to date. Heather (neighbour) was very helpful, be prepared to say hello to her dogs who she walks everyday and can't resist saying hi . We had an extremely relaxing holiday, all our box's were ticked! :)

Family from Chorley, United Kingdom Apr 2016

We had 10 days here in April 16, weather was lovely. The villa has a super location with panoramic views. Quiet location, nearest village was a good 30mins walk up a steep hill but again the views made it worth it. Canillas de Aceituno is a small but fully equipped village with little stores selling all you would need and the numerous bars making sure your never in need of a beer!

Family from Sunderland, United Kingdom Aug 2015

We've just arrived back after a perfect week at this villa, beautiful setting, peaceful and private. Very well equipped and spacious, everything our party needed (5 guest from age 6 to 82!) A car a must to make the most of the surroundings, friendly restaurant as you enter Canillas de Aceituno approx 5 minutes by car, beach at Torre de mar half an hour away, Alhambra palace Granada 1hr 40 ( not to be missed ) And Ronda 2 hrs ( again not to be missed!) We had the greatest time, Heather and Mike were really helpful, the kids loved Toby the dog and the chameleons in the carob tree. A perfect Holiday. Thank you.

I'm so glad you all enjoyed your time at Bajo La Maroma and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings and the village. It's great that you also managed to get to visit Granada's fabulous Alhambra and Ronda.
I have to say, I'm envious of your having been able to spot the chameleons - the last few times I've been there I've failed - but I guess, that's how they've gained their reputation as masters (and mistresses!) of disguise.

Family from Llannefydd, United Kingdom Jun 2014

We had a lovely holiday in this villa which is set in a beautifull area with stunning mountain views. The small village is lovely with a couple of restaurants and a nice cheap bar in the center, and a small shop which has most things you need. Vllez malaga is a short drive

From Takeley, United Kingdom Jun 2013

The villa is well equipped with everything you need for a holiday both inside and outside. We enjoyed the tranquillity of the mountain location. The villa was light, airy and roomy inside and the decor and facilities were clean and modern.

We particularly liked the insect screens on the windows so you could let the air in without worrying about the bugs. We made good use of the CDs and books – particularly the Spanish/English dictionary which was very useful.

The direction instructions were very good and we found the villa with ease, even though it was in a remote location.

Heather was helpful and welcoming.

Wow! Situation is amazing. Recommend either of the restaurants in the village. Enjoyed walking there getting exercise and sustenance. Views magnificent - enjoyed various local walks. Love this place, especially the sound of the goats’ bells in the evening. as they run down the valley it sounds like music. McCartney Family (5 July 2012)

We had two days with around 40 degrees, that was hot, especially for me, cause I am pregnant:) But the fans saved me most nights:) Anyways We loved the house and the surroundings! We had some problems with the large umbrella but Heather and the Danish guy were very helpful! We will recommend the house to others! The only thing is, that i Would be nice with aircon as an option (in the bedrooms) :) Thanks for good service and a Lovely holiday in your house:) Best Regards from the five Danes! Thank you Sheila for letting us stay in your lovely, charming country house. We have had such a relaxing holiday and Heather has been so helpful and lovely. Really, really sad to leave but looking forward to our next trip already. Elen and Darsh, London, UK (1-8 Sept 2012)

A very restful holiday, villa amazing, scenery fantastic and weather brilliant - Definitely recommend this villa to friends and relatives, as well as returning in the near future. PS Check out the night sky. You cannot see that amount of stars in our light-polluted city!! It was the perfect location for a stress free break. We almost certainly want to return, but next time it will be just myself and Jacqueline, with Amanda now at Uni, and our Julian will be doing his own thing. Heather was helpful but we didnt disturb her often as there was no need, everything was self explanatory with no hiccups, we made use of the car and fuel as much as possible. We visited Canillas a couple of times and frequented La Maroma restaurant, also a couple of visits to the beach at Torre del Mar, and the beachside eateries. The rest of the time was spent by the pool and in the evenings we sat in the villa listening to music. Once again many thanks for our stay and we will be touch for our next visit. Colin, 8-15/9/12

Thank you for a wonderful stay at your lovely villa – loved the weather, and soaking up the atmosphere, with the sunsets, mountain goats, shooting stars and fantastic views from the pool. Bryony and Rich, London, UK (15-23 Sept 2012)

“The perfect place to go for a relaxing short break. Beautiful, secluded location, great pool, and a large villa with everything you could need. We shopped for food before we got here, then stayed put until it was time to leave. If youre looking to relax, enjoy some peace and quiet, occasionally take a dip in the pool and then stare into the distance at some stunning mountain views, look no further.” ************************************************************************************************************************** We are from Belgium and we loved here very much. The Villa itself was reflected accurately in the description and had all that we expected plus quite a bit more. It was lovely having a bbq in the evening sun at the pool, whilst listening to the goats and playing some of the board games provided in the villa. The village is a few kilometers away and has a couple of good, reasonably priced eateries (mentioned in the pack in the villa) and lots of little bars. It is a very Spanish village, not touristy, but we found the locals very pleasant and managed to communicate well despite not speaking each others language. Heather who lives next door to the villa and looks after it is very friendly and helpful. We also met another neighbour "Danish Robert" who was very nice and even taxied us to a wedding in Nerja (45 mins away) and pick us up again at 2am!!
