Barretto is a lovely spacious family home, built in the traditional style. It has beautiful views across Puerto de la Cruz and is peaceful and relaxing. The house was immaculately clean, and Isabel our host was helpful and pleasant at all times. The seafront and beach are not far away. We enjoyed every aspect of our stay and we will definitely return.

Beautiful villa surrounded by bananas, with stunning views of the ocean and the same sunsets. Friendly owners. The supply of bananas was regularly supplemented from our own plantation. The house has TV, internet, and well-equipped kitchen. All in all, we had a fantastic holiday.

Travel guide

A quick overview of the Canary Islands

The seven islands off the north-western coast of Africa comprise the Spanish autonomous community Canary Islands. Being hugely popular holiday destinations, especially during winter months, they are renowned for their year-round sunshine, unique volcanic landscape and fine beaches. However, there's a whole lot more to these slices of paradise than just sun, sea and sandy beaches! Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Tenerife and Fuerteventura are all small islands with big personalities, each offering wonderful holiday experience.

Key holiday info

  • Each island in the archipelago has its own airport, but only the four main islands have airports with year-round international flights.
  • The average daytime temperature in the summer is 25°C, and 17°C in winter.
  • The average sea temperature in summer is 24°C and 19°C in winter.
  • The two most popular family-friendly beach resorts are Costa Adeje in Tenerife and Mespalomas in Gran Canaria.
  • The pleasant Canarian climate and lush greenery means perfect conditions for golfing. Almost every island in the archipelago boasts golf courses.

How to get to the Canaries

Larger islands in the archipelago - Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and La Palma - all have direct flights from the UK. Flights from the UK to any of the larger Canary Islands usually take between 4 and 5 hours. Island hopping also popular, so getting from one island to any in the cluster is quite easy.

Where to stay in the Canaries

Island hopping on the Canaries is easy and also a wonderful way to learn about the rest of the islands in the cluster… or just a great plan to have an awayday with the family. With warm weather year-round and beautiful coastlines, explore gorgeous resorts boasting Blue Flag beaches and crystal-clear azure waters like Playa Blanca and Puerto Del Carmen. See lively and vibrant or quiet and humble towns in South Tenerife like Los Cristianos and Adeje. Discover the lush greenery in Doramas Park and the fine desert sands of Maspalomas in Gran Canaria, or the amazing lunar landscape of Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote. Race your family down the water slides in Costa Teguise aqua park. Sportier types can even test their courage here at the annual open water swim Travesiá la Bocaina, from Lanzarote to Fuerteventura.

Beaches in the Canaries

There are too many excellent beaches to choose from in the Canaries, so let’s just go with one per island. It was a tough decision, but we have to go with La Tejita for Tenerife. The choice is overwhelming for beaches in Gran Canaria, but it will have to be Playa de Maspalomas. Though several beaches stand out in Lanzarote, Playa del Risco is an obvious pick. For Fuerteventura, we can’t decide between Grandes Playas Corralejo and Playa de Sotavento de Jandía, so it’s kind of a deadlock. To mix it up a bit, this might be the only pebbly beach in here, and Playa de la Caleta is the number one choice in La Gomera. Sand on Playa de Nogales is so smooth, it charmes everyone who touches it. And that is why it’s our choice for La Palma. Last but not least is El Hierro, and it would be a crime not to mention Verodal beach.

Golf courses in the Canaries

In the Canaries, Tenerife holds the highest number of golf courses, and though all courses are top-notch and beautifully located, Abama Golf holds the number one spot. Gran Canaria follows closely with eight golf courses, all of which are excellent; but if you get a chance, try the 18-hole Maspalomas Golf. There are two golf courses in Lanzarote and four in Fuerteventura. For a golfing holiday in Fuerteventura, Castillo Caleta de Fuste takes the cake - the resort and its beach are ravishing and there are two golf courses - Salinas de Antigua and Fuerteventura Golf Club - next to each other. Whichever one you choose to play on, the grass always seems greener on the other one. In Lanzarote, Las Playitas is a gorgeous resort with a large dark sand beach and the best golf course on the island.

Things to do in the Canaries

The Canaries are brimming with interesting activities to try and attractions to visit. Apart from magnificent beaches and amusement parks with loads of activities, there are also historic sites and museums, nature reserves and parks, old villages and modern towns and cities. Pico de las Nieves in Gran Canaria is the fourth highest peak in the Canaries. It’s right after Roque de los Muchachos and Cumbre Vieja in La Palma, and Mount Teide in Tenerife. Nature lovers, hikers and cyclists will feel right at home here. See larger cities - Santa Cruz de Tenerife or Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and tranquil villages - Betancuria and Teror.

Activities for kids in the Canaries

The Flora and fauna of the Canaries are very diverse and that is why zoos, animal and wildlife parks, marine-life aquariums can be found on almost every island. Some of the best are Loro Park in Tenerife, Maroparque in La Palma, Palmitos Park in Gran Canaria and Oasis Park in Fuerteventura. Also, water parks are one of the favourite leisures for families with children holidaying in the Canaries and Siam Park in Tenerife and Aqualand Maspalomas in Gran Canaria are just a few. Most parks have quite good facilities and restaurants, and are so much fun for the entire family.

Getting around the Canaries

Apart from great island-hopping services available on all of the Canaries, larger islands in the cluster also have an extensive public transport network. Tenerife even boasts a tram service and Gran Canaria will too, soon enough. The most common means of transportation in the Canaries are taxis, and the service is excellent on all islands. Taxis are metered and the base price is around 2 Euros.

Where to eat in the Canaries

The restaurant scene in the Canaries is quite colorful to say the least, from straightforward down-to-earth joints to upmarket eateries. Mercado La Pepa in Tenerife is a lovely food market with affordable and a very extensive list of dishes; do make sure to visit when in South Tenerife. Mirador de La Peña in El Hierro is stunning in every way. Strikingly brilliant design of the restaurant makes the food taste even better. Cheap fast foods and snack bars can easily be found on every island, but can't even be compared to Wapa Tapa in Gran Canaria or Jameos del Agua Restaurante in Lanzarote - to dine in these restaurants is a very unique experience.

Nightlife in the Canaries

Revel in energetic nightlife and bustling beach bars overlooking the sparkling Atlantic. Feel the islands' vibes through live music events and night clubs where the party never really ends. For a vibrant all-nighter, Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas in Tenerife are the obvious choices. Several quality night clubs can also be found in the islands’ capitals; and none of the islands is lacking good bars - from traditional Spanish bars with tapas and locally fermented wine to Irish and British pubs with fish and chips and beer.

Shopping in the Canaries

What’s a holiday without doing some shopping, and there’s plenty of shopping to be done in the Canaries. If you’d like to go shopping bulk, then visit one of the bigger shopping malls on the islands, like Siam Mall in Tenerife, Mogan Mall in Gran Canaria or Biosfera Plaza Shopping and Leisure Centre in Lanzarote. You can find anything in there, from home appliances to stationery. If you’d like to experience the more traditional side of the Canaries, try smaller souvenir shops, craft stores and boutiques in quaint towns and villages.
