Alcalá de los Gazules is a typical mountain village with a long and interesting history, spanning many centuries. It was declared a historic and artistic site in 1984 and has many interesting buildings, including the main church of San Jorge, built in the XVII century on the site of the Moslem mosque. Nearby is an old convent, which is now used as a school. The ruins of a castle which was built in Roman times and destroyed by the French are also close to the church.
Its people are friendly and welcoming and around the 3 main squares and within the maze of narrow alleyways and steps there are many individual shops, supermarkets, tapas bars and restaurants. You will find a childrens playground behind the largest square.
There is a permanent market which opens daily, selling fresh local produce. The local cuisine is well known throughout the province and a speciality include cheeses, egg dishes with locally grown asparagus and is best known for its game dishes, including venison, wild boar, partridge, pheasant and rabbit.
Surrounding area
Alcalá de los Gazules is on the edge of Los Alcornocales National Park, famous for its cork oak forests, where the cork is collected by traditional methods to supply the wine industry. The park lies in the provinces of Cádiz and Málaga, 14 towns and villages border the area. Alcalá, however, is the only village which is completely contained within the conservation area. Because of the many natural spring sand narrow river valleys (canutos), the area has developed its own micro-climate which encourages an abundance of flora and fauna, many of which are said to be unique to this area. There are red deer, roe deer, foxes, mongooses, otters, polecats and weasels. Birdlife includes eagles, vultures, falcons, owls and sparrow hawks

Alcala de los Gazules
The house is situated in Alcalá de los Gazules, which is one of the andalucian Pueblos Blancos. Together with Medina Sidonia, Paterna de Rivera, Benalup and Vejer de la Frontera, Alcalá lies on the famous Bull Route. One of the large attractives squares is within short walking distance, sit relax and see the world go by, or enjoy some local caught game in one of the local specialised restaurants.
The property is a typical village house, conveniently situated within walking distance of all amenities. The main living accommodation is centred on two floors of the 4 storey building with the top floor a roof terrace with attractive open views of the surrounding countryside, mountains and a lake.
The location is ideal for touring the Los Alcornocales (Cork oak forests) National Park which is well known for its flora and fauna and is popular with birdwatchers and walkers. The airports of Gibraltar and Jerez are equidistant with the beaches of the Costa de la Luz (30 to 40 mins drive), while Málaga and the Costa del Sol are also within easy travelling distance

A lovely, traditional town house in a non-touristy part of Spain. The house was comfortable and quiet although the installation of air conditioning in the bedrooms would make it perfect. The kitchen was well-appointed with lots of utensils and pans, the bathroom large and similarly neat and well-appointed. The star turns for this property are the owners and the roof terrace. Rita and Richard were available, did everything to make our stay comfortable and arrived promptly to fix all problems. And the roof terrace allowed us to sit every night and see the stars come out in a calming breeze.

We loved- The peace and quiet at night, spacious rooms, spacious living room -very comfortable with superb reception on TV! Great kitchen (not used often, but hob is super efficient). Would love to stay longer & fill that fridge freezer!!! Roof terrace is great for drying washing in record time . Mini fridge on the terrace is good for drinks when having a sundowner and admiring the view and the peace and quiet. We had a couple of really gorgeous walks and can forward photos to you iof you wish. Regards Phil and Sheila.Atty West Lancashire
When we first moved to Spain, Rita and Richardss house in the hilltop village of Alcalá de los Gazules was our first home.  While we searched for a place of our own, we spent 18 very happy months in their typically Andalucian style village house three stories high with a large roof terrace and magnificent views.  The house has most modern conveniences (large bathroom, fully equipped kitchen with washing machine and tumble dryer and satellite tv giving access to most English tv channels) it is comfortably furnished with a king size bed in the master bedroom.  The house is situated in a small street just a short stroll away from the hub of the village where there are bars, cafés, shops and a well kept park.  Alcalá is about 30 minutes drive from the coastal resorts of Chiclana, Vejer de la Frontera, Barbate and their fabulous beaches.  Our particular favourite is Cabo Trafalgar, which is stunning both in summer and winter.  Alcalá is also on the edge of the Alcornocales Natural Park, which is great for walking and bird watching.  All this and only a 40-minute motorway drive from Jerez de la Frontera airport.  There is also easy access via the motorway, which is a short distance away from Alcalá, to Algeciras, Los Barrios and Gibraltar.    We have many happy memories of Rita and Richards house and the village of Alcalá de los Gazules and can recommend it highly for both short and long term visits.   Steven and Christine Rudd
