Alcalá de los Gazules is a typical mountain village with a long and interesting history, spanning many centuries. It was declared a historic and artistic site in 1984 and has many interesting buildings, including the main church of San Jorge, built in the XVII century on the site of the Moslem mosque. Nearby is an old convent, which is now used as a school. The ruins of a castle which was built in Roman times and destroyed by the French are also close to the church.
Its people are friendly and welcoming and around the 3 main squares and within the maze of narrow alleyways and steps there are many individual shops, supermarkets, tapas bars and restaurants. You will find a childrens playground behind the largest square.
There is a permanent market which opens daily, selling fresh local produce. The local cuisine is well known throughout the province and a speciality include cheeses, egg dishes with locally grown asparagus and is best known for its game dishes, including venison, wild boar, partridge, pheasant and rabbit.
Alcalá de los Gazules is on the edge of Los Alcornocales National Park, famous for its cork oak forests, where the cork is collected by traditional methods to supply the wine industry. The park lies in the provinces of Cádiz and Málaga, 14 towns and villages border the area. Alcalá, however, is the only village which is completely contained within the conservation area. Because of the many natural spring sand narrow river valleys (canutos), the area has developed its own micro-climate which encourages an abundance of flora and fauna, many of which are said to be unique to this area. There are red deer, roe deer, foxes, mongooses, otters, polecats and weasels. Birdlife includes eagles, vultures, falcons, owls and sparrow hawks
