St Lucia ‘Jounen Kweyol’ (Creole Day) Come Celebrate With Us!
Among the cultural events celebrated in St Lucia, Jounen Kweyol (Creole Day) by far the biggest, is a celebration held each year during the last week of October. The highlight of the festival is held on the last Sunday of October in different communities throughout the Island. The venues are selected by the various cultural organizations on the Island and this year 2016, the main event is scheduled to take place on Sunday 30th October in the communities of:
Belle Vue - A rural community located in the south of the Island
Choiseul - On the south west coast
Gros-Islet - in the north and
Jacmel - in the West
The celebration first started in the small village of Mon Repos in 1984 and has grown from strength to strength. Jounen Kweyol is the celebration of the unofficial dialect of French. The Kweyol language and culture is a mixture of French, African and native ones. A blend of Kweyol foods, games, folklore, music and art come together to give the festival an unrivalled flavour that is sure to make your vacation an experience of a lifetime. During the celebrations, everyone is encouraged to speak the kweyol language and believe me you need not worry because the atmosphere is so electrifying that you just cannot resist joining the party; plenty of hands on deck to teach you a thing or two in kweyol. The indigenous foods that include: Crab, callaloo, roast and fried bakes (dumplings) served with cocoa tea, roasted fish and ground provisions, are dished out in the “calabash” plates and while you eat, you are sure to tap your feet to the tune of quadrille and polka music. Dress code is casual although various organised groups will wear the traditional dweyett dress.
St Lucia is a colourful and magnificent island and this wonderful celebration adds to its natural beauty. Your camera and video recorder is a must if you wish to capture the special memories. For anyone wishing to know a thing or two about St Lucia, this is a good place to start. If you’re planning a vacation to St Lucia, I suggest you pencil October in your diary and make that dream vacation a reality. We will provide you with all the tips you require while planning your vacation.
Book now and come celebrate Jounen Kweyol with us. Join in the fun!
