Mae Hong Son is the perfect destination for a genuine experience of northern Thailand and has a wealth of attractions. The small town has long remained separate from the main and overdeveloped tourism centres of Thailand, and has retained a unique, secluded and tranquil atmosphere. With a local population comprised of people of Thai, Burmese, Shan, Muslim and hill tribe stock, it is little wonder that the region is infused with an eclectic tapestry of dress, cuisine, architecture and traditions.
In the town and its surroundings there is a wide selection of this to see and do, whether you are looking for long-neck tribe villages, cascading waterfalls, the historical village of Ban Rak Thai, sunflower fields, the fish cave, hot springs, or elephant camps. We can also recommend English-speaking guides who will take you trekking deep into the surrounding countryside, allowing you the opportunity to experience a brief trek, or a multi-day (and much more arduous!) expedition into the jungle.
Mae Hong Son is perfect for foodies! Many of the herbs and spices used in the local cuisine, any many of their cooking methods, are quite specific to the locality and are featured in number of delicious dishes. We will be happy to recommend places to eat, or to assist you in having dishes delivered. For those seeking more traditional Thai food, there are numerous restaurants in town, where you will also find good Vietnamese food, Chinese specialties, or even a bakery offering home baked sourdough and cakes to enjoy with a freshly brewed coffee!
