A charming fishing port with old Greek style houses perched on the edge of the Tauras mountains, you can wind your way down cobbled streets and find local handmade ceramics, leather, rugs and carpets. clothing, jewelry, etc. Tantalise your taste buds in one of many of Kalkan's famous roof top resturants with wonderful views over the bay. With an old world charm, relax by the harbour with a cold beer and watch the gulets and yachts sail in. Nothing is too much trouble here, the people are friendly without being intrusive.

All modern facilities are available including internet cafes, banks, post office, tourist information bureau, car hire and tour to many interesting historical sites ( Xanthos, Patara, Tlos, Kekova, Teimussa, Castellorizo (see below), Myra, Sidyma and Simina are a few). You can sunbathe at Kalkan beach or take local transport a little further along the breathtaking coast to Kas, and perhaps stop off at the perfect little beach of Kaputas, with its brilliant turquoise waters.

Kas, about 18 km away, is the nearest small town and the spectacular journey from Kalkan has been listed as one of the 10 most beautifal coastal drives in the world. Greece comes right up to the Turkish mainland here as Kastellorizo (Meis in Turkish) - the most easterly of all Greek islands and the setting for Best Foreign Language film "Mediterrano" - sits practically in the harbour at Kas and within a mile and a half from the shore. A daytrip will cost you only 12 euros. Greece's proximity makes it possible to make a stay here a two -country holiday as from Fethiye (45 minutes away), hydrofoils make the 1.5 hour crossing to Rhodes - an official entry point into Greece-every weekday in summer.

In ancient, Pre-Roman times, the Turquoise coast - from Fethiye to nearly Antalya- was known as Lycia (Land of Light). The Lycians' many monuments still dot the entire landscape of the south-west coast of Turkey and the ruins close by at Xanthos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are a must. Visit Letoon, where Alexander the Great received the prophecy he'd conquer Persia, or the sunken city of Kekova, reachable only by boat either from Kas or Ucagiz. And the Lycian Way, Turkey's only long distance footpath also passes through Kalkan, Kas and Finike as well as many ancient sites on its spectacular route through the mountains along the coastline of south-west Turkey.

Further afield you can hike through the awesome Saklikent Gorge, visit small Turkish villages in the cool mountains to escape the heat, or laze on the 14 km long unspoilt Patara Beach.
