Diever, Drenthe and the surrounding area

Located on the edge of the Drents-Friese Wold (6100 hectares), one of the largest national parks of the Netherlands, with 32 marked walks and numerous cycle paths.

Also situated close by to National Park Dwingelderveld (3692 hectares) - the largest moorland on the European Continent - with its 60 kms of walking trails and 40 kms of bicycle paths.

Local activities in this area of outstanding natural beauty include walking, bicycling, horseriding and birdwatching. Sailing and fishing can be enjoyed at Giethoorn (the Venice of the North).

The provincial capital at Assen is just 25 minutes away. While Emmen (with its world-famous zoo), the city of Groningen (shop till you drop) and the German border are all less than an hours drive away.

For the children, there are 18 funparks in the surrounding area. And more than 25 museums will provide an interest to each member of the family (yes, there is even a museum of comic books!) Then there is Diever village itself ... its restaurants, cafes, shops & supermarket ... its 14th Century church ... and famously renowned for the open-air productions of Shakespeare which have been re-enacted in its forest amphitheatre every Summer since 1946.

Diversity on your doorstep: Diever is placed at the crossroads of three provinces - Drenthe, Overijssel and Friesland - all uniquely different to one another. So when you are in Drenthe, why not discover Friesland and Overijssel provinces as well - the borders lie just 15 minutes away by car!

So, whether its picknicking in the forest, taking a dip in a forest bathing pool or going by horseback along one of the many marked trails, you wont be disappointed by this areas rich heritage, its welcoming, English-speaking people and its unending choice of excursions and attractions.

Come and visit the real Netherlands!

We have really enjoyed our week here. The bike rides were fun and have inspired me to carry on when I get home. I may even buy a Dutch bike!! Would love to come back one day. Bettina Were on our way back to Texas. Mike and I have really enjoyed our stay here. Our hosts made us very welcome. We would recommend this house to anyone! Caroline and Mile I have spent a really lovely holiday here with my family. I would point out that I have not ridden a bicycle in over 50 years but I managed it (not sure about my spelling though!!) Really great. Mary.

Sylia & I cant thank you enough for making our family holiday a very special time for all of us. After to having postpone our vacation a year due to the accident we had & your help in getting it rescheduled, it was as if we had known you both for a few years. For all your help to us & our children is just hard to say thanks, from all of us. The farm house, location in Drenthe, was perfect for all the biking we wanted to do. Your house was very comfortable for all nine of us and your help with bike, train, restaurant and the local open-air Shakespeare theater reservations we greatly appreciated! This being our 5th trip to bike Holland, we have seen a lot of the country, but Drenthe will remain our favorite & we shall return. After a month here we still hate to leave. Under the Oaks we will recommend to all interested in really seeing rural Holland. From all of the Rast family who so much enjoyed our stay, we say thanks for making it so through your hospitality. With our best regards, Gary & Sylvia Rast, Williamsburg, Virginia, USA

The owners were very gracious and helpful, including helping us make arrangements with Dutch speakers at places we wanted to visit. The house was in good condition and the amenities were as advertised, and in some respects better than advertised. The location is good and provides convenient access to much of the east and northeast Netherlands. The neighborhood was quiet and the surroundings were pleasant.

The accomidations were perfect for a family of nine. The location was ideal for biking Drenthe which is why we came to the Diever area. David and Monique couldnt have been better hosts, they helped us through our stay in so many ways to make sure we enjoyed our vacation instead of having to do household chores. They took care of us well beyond our expectations. I would not only recommend Under the Oaks to friends, but we hope to go back again in our future. Gary Rast

The owner David and his family was very welcoming, he had lots of info on things to do and see in the local area. The welcome pack was very useful and the house was more than adequately stocked for four adults and two babies. It was a great first family holiday and we hope to return in the future We really enjoyed our first holiday in Holland
The spacious beautiful home far exceeded our expectations.. The complementary bottle of wine and breakfast goodies was so much appreciated. David was extremely helpful to us as we had many questions regarding the area. Diever is absolutely the perfect village, with nearby restaurants on cute cobble stoned really get a good taste of the culture that a large city could not touch.
As international visitors it was pleasing to arrive to our home and find it fully prepared for our stay. The warm and friendly welcome we received and the welcome pack of food and goodies exceeded our expectations. This was followed up with handy advice on what this community had to offer us. We really loved the local shops, walking/cycling tracks and the genuine warmth of the local people. We look forward to returning again in the future. Jeff & Marcelle - Kuranda, Australia
This is a charming farmhouse, but conveniently located in a very walkable village. Everything was both functional and comfortable. Probably the best feature is the gracious helpfulness of the owners who live nearby. We arrived late in the evening and they had thoughtfully stocked the kitchen with the basics for breakfast--a marvelous surprise and well beyond our expectations. Throughout the stay they were very wiling to provide local knowledge and tips for things to do. We would definitely stay there again!
I would highly recommend this property, the accommodation was spacious, comfortable and very clean. Gnd floor bedroom ideal for elderly as shower and WC easily accessible. Steep stairs to first floor with stair gate provided, all bedrooms comfortable and airy. Well-equipped kitchen. The owner has provided books and games in case of bad weather. Welcome pack on our arrival was a very nice touch. Situated in the centre of a busy village, close to local shops, restaurants and well stocked supermarket nearby. Diever is ideal for horse riding and cycling with many cycle paths close by, cycle hire is easily available. Lots to do in and around the area with a good bus service. We found the Dutch people were very friendly and helpful and we never found communicating a problem. The owner, David and family were extremely hospitable and nothing was too much trouble. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in “Under the Oaks” and in Diever.
What a great place! The area is magnificent loads to do and see. Bike hire is cheap and simple - aided by the fact that nearly everyone speaks English which is a bonus when negotiating rentals. the house itself was better than we imagined - 3 adults and 3 very active young children and we still weren't tripping over each other. David and Monique were a godsend (so was the route planner) nothing was too much trouble. Pity they couldn't sort out the weather as easily as they found the information we needed. Overall an excellent holiday and one I would not hesitate to recommend to any one.
For a quiet and peceful break, we found this place to be perfect. A beautiful cottage in a beautiful village. As Holland is so small, and we had a car, travelling to places was easy from Diever aswell as being a great place to get away and chill out from everything.Restaurants and shopping all within walking distance and the cottage had everything that you would need. Our hosts made sure we had food in the cottage on arrival and showed us around the village when we arrived so we new where everything was. They were also available at any time to answer any questions or give advice. On our trip around Europe we found this place of a weeks accommodation the best value.

Amy Silver Bay, MN, USA The best rental experience ever! Submitted: Aug 19, 2013 Stayed: Aug 2013 I have never taken the time to write a response for VRBO. I have always been pleased and happy, but the owners of this property made our experience unforgettable! I communicated with them quite a bit, via email, prior to arrival and they were more than willing to answer any and every odd question I had. Upon arrival, they had arranged everything we could ever want or need for our stay. They went above and beyond to make our stay perfect. It truly was the best experience I have ever had and I hope to have the opportunity to visit and stay there again. I highly recommend this property for anyone considering a stay in the countryside of the the Netherlands. Wonderful home and environment! Thank you David, Monique and girls - we hope you enjoyed our song!
laurie w. colorado love this place!! Submitted: Apr 9, 2013 Stayed: Mar 2013 Our stay at the Farmhouse in Diever was wonderful! It truly felt like a home away from home! We loved that we could walk to the local restaurants and shops....we rented bikes and rode on one of the many bike trails for hours exploring the countryside! Also, loved feeding the horse apples, carrots and bread and waking to the sound of birds each morning! The owners of the house are so helpful and kind and we felt very welcome... How now to have wine and a bag of groceries for us when we arrived!! We were close enough to anywhere in Holland that we wanted to visit ...just a short drive to see the rest of the country...although, we felt so comfortable in the home , we just loved exploring the local area! I will recommend this home to everyone! It was the most wonderful vacation!

Garth & Sharon Red Deer, AB ,Canada Amazing stay at "Under the Oaks" Submitted: Apr 25, 2011 Stayed: Mar 2011 My family just finished a stay at Under the Oaks in Diver, NL, and had an absolutely wonderful time. There was nothing that we needed for our stay that wasnt provided for in the house. The accommodations completely exceeded our expectations! It was so spacious and well equipped! David and Monique are fantastic hosts who truly want their guests to get the best experience possible in the Diever area. The wealth of information that they can provide and assistance was fantastic! We cant wait to go back! A gorgeous house, in a beautiful setting with the grocery store a few doors down, the butcher and baker also just a short walk down the street, and a quick stroll to the ice cream parlour make the setting absolutely perfect! The location is also so central to many activities in the area! We cant wait to go back and visit again on our next trip to Holland. If you are considering staying at Under the Oaks, dont hesitate any longer! You cant go wrong with this place!

About the owner
Greetings from Diever! We are David and Monique Samson. In 2004 we decided to relocate our family to peaceful rural Drenthe, one of the most beautiful parts of the Netherlands. In 2004, here in the small Drenthe village of Diever, we found the perfect location for a holiday farmhouse. The property was originally the site of a very popular B&B, which operated from 1972 until 2004 (at which point the previous owners decided that it was time to retire!) We have discovered the most idyllic spot in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Being situated between two National Parks (including the largest area of moorland in Europe at 'Dwingelderveld') allowing for many recreational activities, yet with close proximity to the motorway network making for easy day trips to other parts of the Netherlands and the German border, which is less than an hour away. If we can provide you with any local knowledge to make sure that you have the most perfect holiday then please email. Centrally located in Diever village. Within walking distance of a supermarket, bakery, 6 restaurants, chemist, newsagents, many souvenir shops, a bike rental shop and an archaeological museum. We are just a short walk/bike ride away from the nearby 'Drents-Friese' forest. The farmhouse, situated adjacent to fields and a bicycle path running alongside, can comfortably accommodate up to 10 adults. Smaller groups are most welcome (see our discounts of up to 20%). You will be amazed by the many attractions in the area. The outstanding natural beauty of Drenthe is here for all to enjoy - not forgetting the forests, lakes, dunes, hiking & riding trails, parks for the kids, the many museums & places of historic interest, as well as the ease of reaching the surrounding towns.
