House overview - owner's description

Spacious, elegant, newly reburbished traditional riad on a quiet street in the heart of the medina. 7 mins walk from the beach, sea view terrace.

Nestling down a quiet alleyway within the walls of the medina, two minutes walk from the bustling souks, outdoor cafes and candlelit restaurants, and just seven minutes from the beach is Dar Ettouahen, the 'Mill House'.

Cosy enough for two, but well-equipped and spacious enough for a whole family or group of friends, Dar Ettouahen is an elegant, light and airy riad, with traditional stone arches, tadelakt (marble-dust walled) bathrooms, tiled floors, high thuya wood ceilings and an open log fireplace.

On the roof is a large sheltered terrace with views over the medina, and from a second smaller upper terrace, you can look out to the sea and watch the waves crashing on the rocks below..

GROUND FLOOR
Fantastic large open plan living and dining room with well-stocked kitchen. Open log fireplace and traditional Moroccan fountain. WC.

FIRST FLOOR
Cosy seating area with TV and DVD player with two sofa beds. 1 twin and 1 large double bedroom. Shower room.

SECOND FLOOR
2 large double bedrooms. Family bathroom.

THIRD FLOOR
Small kitchen. Large roof terrace with tables and chairs, sun beds and a covered seating area away from the sun. Two smaller upper roof terraces with fantastic sea view.

If you are travelling with small children we provide stair gates, a high chair, a travel cot (with additional mattress and cot bedding) and a baby bath. We are also able to organise babysitting during the evenings.

Essaouira
Essaouira is a small historic fishing port on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, renowned for its laid-back and friendly atmosphere, souks stuffed full of local art and craftwork as well as local produce, its long sandy beach and its well-preserved old walled medina, named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2001. The weather is temperate and warm year-round and the bracing sea winds make it an attractive spot for windsurfing. The beach is also home to daily local football and basket ball games and at the south end are the ruins of Borj el-Berod, mythically said to have been the inspiration for Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Castles made of sand’.

The old medina ramparts are a great spot to watch the waves crashing onto the rocks as the sun goes down over the ‘Ile de Mogador’, a group of tiny islands which offer sanctuary to Eleanora’s falcons. Inside the medina, the narrow streets (from which cars are banned), are filled with bustling fish, spice, vegetable and pottery markets, art galleries exhibiting work of local artists, souks selling carpets, ironwork and local thuya wood craftware and children playing. Stop and stare in one of the local cafes or patisseries, selling strong coffee, Moroccan mint tea and freshly squeezed orange juice. Evenings are happily wiled away in one of the numerous restaurants, steeped in atmosphere and warmth, which serve traditional Moroccan fare: tagines, couscous and Moroccan and French wine.

Your stay
During your stay, you will be looked after by Fouad, our local caretaker who is there to make sure that you have a great stay. Not only is he able to help with any problems you may have (e.g. finding a doctor), but he can also give lots of advice and organise excursions for you, including transport to the airport or your next destination. He will meet you when you arrive in Essaouira, take you to the house, and lend you a local mobile phone with which you can call him if you need him during your stay. He is kind, honest and very reliable.

The house is cleaned weekly and in between guests. Khadisha, our excellent cook, is also available to make delicious breakfasts and traditional Moroccan dinners for you at very reasonable prices. These meals are often described by guests as a highlight! She will also provide additional cleaning and washing for you on request for a small charge.

Getting to the house
We have a longstanding relationship with a taxi company who offer a very reliable service at a reasonable cost. They can provide cars of different sizes from Essaouira airport (starting at 200 dhms), from Marrakech (starting at 700 dhms) and from Agadir (starting at 800 dhms).

The medina around the house is pedestrianised, therefore there is no parking directly by the house but there is a large secure car park just a 10 minute walk down by the beach that many of our guests use. Fouad will be able to give you directions to the carpark on your arrival and will meet you there to welcome you and show you to the house.

It was great. Beautifully decorated, good beds and bathrooms, soft sheets and towels, etc etc. Because it is in the middle of the medina you feel like youre sort of living in Essaouira. The kids had a great time discovering their way in the small streets. We went to the beach every day and in the evening they enjoyed their rest and games in the house. We stayed in Dar Ettouahen for 5 nights with a family of 6 (2 adults and 4 kids). And...
We woke up every morning to the "bzz bzz" sound of the fresh orange juice being squeezed by the lovely breakfast ladies: better breakfast for less money than in a hotel.
Also thanks to the owners who sent us good information (just phone Fouad and everything is arranged!).
We hope we can stay again the next time.

The property was huge, well equipped and having a cook on call was a great luxury. Thanks for everything. - PS, I didnt read the guide in time and got ripped off by the fish market. Be warned!

A fantastic property in a beautiful place!

We are all vegetarian and usually self cater as we get very bored with resturant and hotel food, but this time we didn't cook once. The restaurants were all very good, but the house keeper, Kadysha's cooking was better still.

“We had a great holiday in your gorgeous Riad. We particularly enjoyed the breakfasts and the evening meal cooked for us by Khadisha - she's a real gem. We tried some of the local restaurants and we loved them also, especially Villa Maroc. Went to Marrakesh for an overnight and stayed in the place recommended by you - it worked out fine but we were delighted to get back to our lovely home in Rue Tuahen. The local people were very friendly and seemed to be looking out for us when we got lost (which we did regularly in the alleyways)!”Alice Walsh, Ireland

“Thanks so much for a great holiday in Essouira! We really enjoyed the house, spending endless sunny days on the terrace reading books. It was just the relaxing holiday we wanted. The house is really well equipped and we were looked after very nicely by Khadisha. Apart from an hour delay in the return taxi that Nouredine had booked the whole holiday was perfect. Thanks again, we will definately reccommend your place to others and may even return with friends (we felt a little greedy having the whole place to ourselves!).”Alison, England
