Location of object
Zebbug is Maltese for olives or olive trees, olea europeaea, in Arabic Zejtun. It is a very long-living tree that grows up to five metres high. In Arabic, Zebbug means wild olives, olea silvestris, that differs from the cultivated variety mainly in the spiny lower branches and small leaves and drupes. Some wild olive trees must have been growing beneath the south-east ridge of the village and not on its top, where the north-westerly winds are strong enough to uproot them. It was from these zebbug that eventually the hill got its name. The name of the village is first recorded as zebugi in a document related to the foundation of a religious chantry on 1 September 1492.
Notwithstanding its altitude, Zebbug also had a share in the ravaging and looting of the Turks. Inside the parish church, on the left hand side of the high altar as already referred to, there is a chapel with a beautiful old painting of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin. Folk refer to the image as tal-Virtut, of the miracles. Several folk can swear to this day, that they see the radiant face of the Virgin turning yellowish and pale before an impending natural catastrophe. The miraculous image was also invoked by the people to save them from the threat of invasions.
It is said that one day some corsairs dared to devastate the countryside as far as iz-Zebbug. All of sudden, when they were very close to the village, a lady that resembled the image in the altarpiece appeared on the spot hurling stones to repel the foe. Confused and routed the corsairs returned to their galleys and sailed away. They spread the story among fellow corsairs and since then no one dared to approach iz-Zebbug again.
Very clean, spacious accommodation with an extremely helpful and friendly landlord, who lives next door with his family. Easy access to all popular beaches in Gozo. The villa is a farmhouse, set in a very serene and tranquil surroundings, overlooking 180 degrees of panoramic sea views. Which has been the most amazing sight to wake up to every morning. Great for families with children. Tip: Hire a car! Talk to John the owner who will get you the best rates possible. We brought 5 kids with us, and the amount of stuff you have to lug to the beach and back was unsuitable for public transport. Plus, since Gozo is a small, quiet island, driving to a beach would only take us 15 minutes or so! A car is so worth getting!
Thoroughly enjoyed our holiday here, people are friendly and helpful, the landlord and his family are awesome as they saved us a packet and were already planning round two!

The house is unbelievable for the price. The views are absolutely incredible and the owner is very very kind and helpfull. We spent 11 nights at this house and it was very good time. The house is very spacious, the place is quiet, food shop is only few minutes away. As property is on the hill very near seashore, it can get pretty windy during windy days, but seaviews are realy worth to see. Will recomend to my friends.
