Xaghra lies on a hill in the central north east of Gozo. The name means wilderness in Maltese, which tells something of the area before it was inhabited. Xaghra has a beautiful parish church which is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It is known locally as 'Il-Vitorija', the Blessed Virgin Mary of Victories. The parish of Xaghra was established by Bishop Cocco-Palmeri on 28th April 1688. The parish was originally sited in the chapel of Saint Anthony Abbot in the same village. The present church grew around the original building recorded first in the late seventeenth century. The foundation stone was laid on 2nd October 1815 and it was consecrated on 26th May 1878. The title of Basilica was conferred on the parish on 26th August 1967. The church is covered throughout with marble, and a main attraction is a beautiful statue of the young Virgin Mary, il-Bambina, brought over from Marseilles in 1878.

Xaghra is famous for its prehistoric sites; the temples of Ggantija and the nearby Neolithic site of Santa Verna. Calypso's cave also lies within Xaghra. The village also has two grottos which have stalactites and stalagmites, namely Ta'Xerri and Ta'Ninu, both of which are open to the public. There is also a museum of toys and an old wheat grinding windmill which has been fully restored and houses a collection of agricultural and domestic items from years long past.

This was our third stay on Gozo, Farmhouse in a good central location on island. Have stayed in Xaghra on one of our previous holidays and enjoyed our stay there once again, so knew where to go, where to eat in the area and on the island, distances between towns, villages, etc. Farmhouse clean, comfortable, in quiet location, pool area large enough for our requirements. All transfers between airport and farmhouse excellent and representative that met us, very professional. All of party thoroughly enjoyed their holiday once again. Hope to return next year. Thanks.

The property was as described. We found it nice and clean on arrival. Transfers and Hire Car were good and it was a very easy start to the holiday. We enjoyed the village, it has small supermarket, nice restaurant and good hairdresser! Agree with previous comments about the dish washer. The water pressure is very low throughout the house, so the dishwasher does not work properly, we only used the bottom shelf. Shower heads need to be cleaned so that the showers are adequate. The washing machine appears to be working, but the thermostat is broken so it boiled our clothes and removed the colour. We reported this to Xlendi Tourist Services, but it was not repaired during our stay. The property could be improved by some basic maintenance. Rubbish should be left at the end of the lane, not outside the door, as we had been told. Better information would help not to upset the neighbours! An information book in the property would help. Overall we had an excellent holiday, Thank you.

Overall the house was as described, although we could find no evidence of the satellite/cable connection to the tv. We did find a reasonably priced video rental shop in Xaghra for the kids. The building had clearly been uninhabited for some time and was very cold and dusty to begin with. For winter use the owner may wish to consider additional heating for comfort. The maid service was efficient and she was very pleasant. The transfers, caretaking, car rental and overall holiday management by the Xlendi Tourist Services on the Island was faultless, making the holiday easy and low in unnecessary stress. The dishwasher does not work well and seemed to simply bake on the dirt. After two days we handwashed all the crockery. For users like us, who are serious about self catering, the owners might wish to consider improving the kitchen equipment/utensils etc a little. Having said that the range of good, easily accessible restaurants was excellent. On the whole, I would suggest that this property would make a good summer provision, but as we experienced it only a fair winter proposition.
Gozo is a beautiful place and this house is very relaxing as its so quiet here, but less than 10 minutes to the square. I have really enjoyed staying here and hope to return. All the equipment seems to work fine all looks brand new. There was also a table tennis table which was a pleasant surprise

The property is very spacious and comfortable and the pool area is much larger than the other places we stayed in Gozo. We didnt find any problems with the water and showers which were fine. The only issue we had was that we couldnt get the phone to work! Xaghra is a lovely village and the restaurants are very good, The Jubilee cafe is the best value on the island
