Cycling alongside the Venice lagoon

For those who prefer staying away from the crowds of tourists that invade Venice every day, we suggest a lovely cycling itinerary between the Lido of Venice and the Lido of Pellestrina, to discover places of rare beauty and enormous naturalistic value.

To reach the Lido of Venice on your bike, take the Ferryboat that departs from the Tronchetto of Venice, not far from Piazzale Roma square. Grand luxury hotels, elegant buildings in the Art Nouveau style, long tree-lined boulevards, parks and gardens overlook the itinerary. The charming island of Lido of Venice was the residence of numerous artists, among them Thomas Mann, who chose one of the finest hotels here as the setting for his famous novel Death in Venice. A 12 kilometres trail will then take you from San Nicoletto to Malamocco, passing through the Gran Viale boulevard and the Alberoni locality. At the Faro Rocchetta lighthouse another Ferryboat will take you to Pellestrina.
The Lido of Pellestrina is a narrow strip of land over eleven kilometres long, and it seems to be suspended between the sea and the lagoon. In the 1700s, the Most Serene Republic built the Murazzi, a mighty man-made reef that served to protect Venice from high waters. Today this coastline is made of Istria stone, and still protects the tiny fishing villages: San Pietro in Volta, Portosecco (an ancient port now silted up), and Pellestrina.
On the island of Pellestrina it is not rare to find lace makers outside their doors making delicate and much sought-after laces on their lace pillows.
On this part of the Venetian lagoon visitors are fascinated by the many views that appear along the simple itinerary that follows the island main straight stretch (you can't miss it, there is only one asphalt road here). The oasis of Ca' Roman is the green lung of the island, and covers a surface area of approximately 40 hectares.
How to travel: ferryboat and bicycle
Venice's Lido

The numerous huts that characterize the lido of this island, between the Venetian Lagoon and the Adriatic Sea, have hosted royalty, artists, and celebrities. Today, anyone can enjoy a peaceful stay on this island that in September hoots the International Film Festival. This island has been recently awarded with the prestigious Blue flag thanks to the quality of its water.
The fame of the gold beach that extends for twelve kilometres is deeply rooted in the decades of the Belle Epoque. During the Belle Epoque the island became a vacation spot for European nobles and royalty, actors and actresses, and magnates from the financial and industrial world. A fascinating history that manifests itself through beautiful and sumptuous Art Nouveau villas and the luxury hotels of Excelsior and Des Bains. In the last century, these hotels were a meeting place for the international jet set.

Lido also reserves other surprises like the ancient monastery of San Nicolò, the monumental and historical centre of the island and the hamlet of Malomocco, a small Venice with streets, squares and houses that lean on each other. This place is also filled with the wonder of landscapes, including the WWF protected oasis of the dunes of Alberoni and of course the Lagoon with its stunning scenery.
Summer holidays on the island of Lido also means sports and fun, with its numerous facilities dedicated to a number of sports including the famous golf course at Alberoni, one of the most beautiful and oldest in Italy.
Venice is a city reflected in the water and the image that returns is imprinted in the eye of the beholder. A magical city par excellence where everything is magical, romantic, full of poetry and sadness...
This city is unparalleled, which has been awarded the title of World Heritage by UNESCO for its artistic treasures and for the extraordinary interpenetration between human activities and the natural landscape of the lagoons.
The traveler, if only in passing, is seduced by the beauty and variety of monuments and works of art. Piazza San Marco, the pulsating heart of the city, the important urban and architectural complex, takes its name from the famous Basilica of San Marco, built in oriental style and topped with five Byzantine-style domes. The vast space that is filled with tourists from all over the world opens on one side of the lagoon, while the other is bounded by the bell tower and glamorous buildings of the Old and New Procuratie and Palazzo Ducale.
The Bridge of Sighs is not far from here and is a necessary stop of the romantic gondola ride that traditionally goes up the Grand Canal, the main waterway of the city. Venice is a place to live to its fullest and a place where one should get lost in the intricate lanes while going up and down the bridges discovering the treasures of the baroque Church of Santa Maria della Salute, the Accademia, host to the masterpieces of Venetian painters from between the fourteenth and the eighteenth century or the School of San Rocco with the extraordinary series of paintings by Tintoretto. Venice is also modern and contemporary art, like the art works that are found in the renovated Punta Della Dogana, or inside Palazzo Grassi, with its avant-garde art on display at the Biennial exhibition.
A year of...
Carnival (February)
Festival of the Redeemer (the third Sunday of July)
Venice's international film festival (September)

The accomodation was lovely spacious and clean. We were four adults and had plenty of space. the beds were comfortable, the view to Venice fantastic and we found it was quite place to retreat after a day on Venice. Only ten minutes by the fantastic ferry system.Plenty of eating places or a functional kitchen. Rosalind Howell, Manjimup (AU). Location was fantastic with view across the lagoon to the city. Having a private garden was also great. Staff were very helpful and the apartment clean and had everything we needed. Only 10 minutes to the beach and vaparetto. Anthony Fitchett, Belper (GB) I stayed in the roof top garden suite. The suite itself was lovely beautifully decorated and well equipped, and the views from the 60m2 private balcony were fantastic looking back towards Venice. Great piece of customer service with breakfast being delivered to the room and served on the balcony. B & B is also in a great location less than 100m from the ferry terminal Laura Blair, Leeds (GB). 2010-07-21 Breath taking view of Venice and the lagoon..
