Why the owner chose a home in this location

After spending time looking around Italy we fell in love Abruzzo and the beautiful walled town of Sulmona. The Abruzzo region has so much to offer the holiday makers who want to experience the real Italian culture. The Gran Sasso & Maiella Mountains both have a mass expanse of National Parks to explore which offer numerous leisure activities including walking, rock climbing, skiing, swimming, horse-riding, bird watching, exploring ancient villages, monuments and churches, wine tasting and eating delicious local produce. And on the edge of the Maiella National Park with soaring peaks and incredible wild life including bears and wolfs. Here the sightseeing views are breath-taking of the Abruzzo region at its best. Sulmona is a small city walled boutique town offering the best of Italy.

Travel

By Air - Pescara Airport is the nearest 1 hour drive. Ryanair offers low cost flights from Stansted. There are two airports in Rome which are 2 hours drive away. Ciampino is slightly closer and Easy Jet and Ryanair both service this airport.
By train -The train across the mountains from Rome (via Tivoli and Avezzano) is spectacular and slow, perfect for checking out the scenery. There are about six trains daily from Rome Tiburtina station which take about 2 hours

Distances

The driving distance to the cities are as follows: Rome 94 miles, Pescara 65 miles, Naples 108 miles and Salerno 134 miles. Casa Rossa Only a few minutes stroll from many other historical sites, bars, restaurants and shops. A fifteen minutes’ walk to the Europa country club which has beautiful setting and pools for adults and children.

Ski-ing

The region has 21 ski areas with 368 km. of runs. Located in the highest region of the Apennines, these ski areas are at heights nearly comparable to many Alpine resorts. Because of their proximity to the Adriatic and winter precipitation patterns, they often have more snow than the Alps. Abruzzo also is popular for cross country skiing, especially on the high plain of the Gran Sasso as well as the Majella. Lift passes tend to be cheaper than the Alps. One day at Rocarasso currently costs 34 euros. Rocarasso is only a thirty five minutes drive from Sulmona and is suitable for beginners and the more experience skiers.

Coast/Beach

The beaches along the Adriatic Coast 45 minutes away by car are all blue-flagged and among the cleanest, most family-friendly in Italy, safe, clean and mostly sandy beaches protected by breakwaters, with sun loungers and umbrellas for hire, cafes and bars. Elsewhere are plenty of quiet coves and bays with warm, shallow waters..

The apartment is located in a very old building complex in the historic area of the walled city but of course has been renovated and includes all modern facilities. Located within the old wall of the city parking is outside the wall nearby and is free. Depending upon the hour it is possible to drive in to the old city near the apartment to drop luggage. The walk from the car park is about 150 metres but up a steep road. The apartment is over three levels with a steep internal staircase between floors. There are balconies on the upper two levels. We enjoyed our stay and found some great restuarants and cafes within 200 metres of the apartment. Exploring the narrow roads at night returning from a restuarant presented great photo opportunities. Sulmona is also the gate way to some great mountain drives, historic sites and fabulous food.
Being in a very old building the apartment does have some plumbing issues, but these are not insurmountable.
Join the evening stroll down Corso Ovidio with the locals and enjoy a Campari at one of the many bars before dinner.

We had a lovely holiday in Sulmona and Casa Rossa was certainly a great part of it. The location is perfect, a short walk away from Corso Ovidio, with shops, ATMs and restaurants, and also very close to parking. Sulmona itself was a gem, and a perfect base for exploring Abruzzo, a region that now holds a very special place in my heart. The house was lovely, newly renovated, so charming and cozy and perfectly well-fitted for our family of four, including free standing fans (even if the house was cool inside) and washing machine (which we used a lot, traveling with children). The house is divided in three levels with steep stairs connecting them, so its not the best place for people with impaired mobility. But other than that...I believe its suitable for everyone who wants to get a little taste of beautiful Italy. The neighborhood was full of character and very lively at night, with summer open-air weekend parties while we there, which I found a lot of fun. And there was a free admission opera festival being held in gorgeous historic buildings in town, what a treat! As for the owner, she was very helpful and communicative, sending us directions and tips for our stay . She also left us some wine and confetti, such a nice touch that made us feel very welcome. We loved our stay at Casa Rossa and hope to go back soon!

Ideally located just a few minutes walking distance from the centre of town. At night it is wonderful to take a stroll for a gelato or a coffee at the Grand Cafe or a lovely meal at any of the traditional Italian restaurants. The Casa itself is large and bright with every modern convenience, decorated to a very high standard whilst maintaining its authentic Italian charm. Sulmona itself is a gem! We cannot wait to return! I recently stayed in the apartment for a week and found it very clean, tidy and well stocked, it is a very nice apartment with plenty of room over 3 floors with a lovely balcony on the top floor - perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine! The apartment definitely lived up to its description on the website. The apartment is perfected located in an idyllic location in a traditional quiet Italian via, set only minutes away from Sulmonas vibrant centre which has a wide selec tion of lovely restaurants, nice shops and stunning views with plenty of sightseeing. Plenty of free parking is available nearby. I would definitely recommend holidaying in this part of the world as it is gorgeous and this apartment makes it a bit more special. And I’m going back ! We live in a small seaside town on the west coast Scotland, having retired in 2007 after working and living in various countries for many years (including Italy), once we retired we decided that we needed a project in our lives to keep us sane and with the our love of the Italian culture it was the natural choice to find something in Italy to restore.
