Apulia is a traditional Italian holiday area with a great reputation for its local cuisine. Eating out is a wonderful experience at the characterful "Osteria" in all the surrounding historic towns (especially the antipasti). Food and drink is much cheaper than the UK, especially if you buy in the colourful local markets.

The villa is a 40 min drive from Brindisi airport which has good deals from Stansted with Ryanair It is a 2.5 hour flight and flights normally leave early evening. There is also the option of Bari airport served by Ryanair from Stansted and Easyjet and BA from Gatwick which is just over an hour's drive away or Pescara or Naples airports which are 4 hours away and may have cheaper flights.

Perfect for those who want to:
- enjoy the countryside views
- explore the lovely villages and historic towns nearby
- taste the authentic Italian Puglian cuisine at the local Osteria and restaurants in the towns nearby
- visit the local music festivals and festas in the region during the summer months
- relax on the nearby sandy beaches and coves
- practice their Italian with the friendly locals (a phrase book and dictionary are provided).

The villa is a 15 minute drive from the coast and 5km from the nearest historic town of Ostuni. The nearest beach is Torre Pozella and the coastal nature reserve of Torre Guaceto is about 10km away with footpaths and secluded beaches.

Local Activities
There are lots of things to do in this part of Apulia as follows:
Ostuni
- beautiful town perched on a hill 5km away with an old historic centre with very old cathedral and central plaza.

Fasano
- lovely little old town with a pretty central square and a safari zoo for children (see leaflet in red file) The shops are closed on Mondays in this town.

Lecce
- a beautiful historic city with an old historic centre and beautiful churches and little curiosity shops and great delicatessen. ( an hour’s drive) This has a market on Friday mornings. See the red folder in the house for a map showing all the attractions.

Martina Franca
- another lovely town with a historic centre about 12km away (15-20 mins) – lots of little boutiques. This has a very famous music festival in July and early August.

Gallipoli
- a coastal town with a beautiful harbour (just over an hour’s drive away)

Otranto
- this is quite a touristy seaside town but has a lovely old centre and great walk along the harbour walls with lots of sea view restaurants.

Monopoli
- this is an unspoilt little walled, historic town right on the coast with a lovely little sandy beach, high castle walls and a reasonably priced fish restaurant overlooking the coast just south of the town. Just head up the A379 in direction of Bari and you will come to it.

Polignano a Mare
- another lovely little unspoilt walled town right on the coast.

Other Places of Interest

Castel del Monte
This is a Swabian castle listed by UNESCO and built in 13th century with good views and is situated near Bari. It has been restored and you can visit the inside.

Egnazia
These are the ancient roman ruins of the town dating back to the 6th century which are situated on the coast, south of Monopoli.

Trulli villages of Alberobello & Locorotondo
These villages are a bit touristy but you will be able to see over a thousand trullo, cone shaped houses and a trullo church, all in one place. Head west from Ostuni and they are about a 20-25 min drive away.

Parco Nazionale dei Gargano
If you feel like a long drive and some beautiful scenery then I would recommend this area which is about a 2-3 hr drive north from Ostuni. It is full of pine covered slopes and sandy coves. It is directly north of Bari and the best beach area is the little fishing port of Peschici on its north coast.

Matera
This town was the setting for the film “The Passion”. It is in the province of Basilicata and has dramatic scenery and spectacular homes called “sassi” built into the sides of the ravine’s high walls and is recommended for a visit. It is directly inland from Bari and takes about 1.5 - 2 hours to drive there via Alberobello or via Martina Franca and Massafra.

Caves of Castellana Grotte
These caves are meant to be spectacular and worth a visit.

Cassano d. Murge
This is little town directly inland from Bari which has a festa for the first 3 days of August each year which has been recommended. You can see the parade of the saints and it’s meant to be a lot of fun.

Car Recommended
Please note that the villa is situated on a narrow road and is unsuitable for vehicles more than 1.8m wide (eg wide people carriers). A car is highly recommended for this villa as you would need to drive to local shops and restaurants.

Shopping
Nearest Shop
There is a mini market about 3km from the house and full directions are provided. The nearest supermarkets are in Ostuni called Cityper and Sigma and are about 15 mins drive away and are open on Sunday morning.

Local Markets
The local markets are a great way to buy really fresh food and are as follows:
(Food, clothes and household goods)
These are as follows:
Cisternino – Monday morning
Ceglie Messapica– Saturday morning
Fasano – Friday morning
Francavilla Montana – Saturday morning
Martina Franca – Weds morning (Bric a brac -3rd Sunday of month)
Ostuni – Every Saturday morning from 8am (Bric a brac - 1st Sunday of month)

Third time for us ... Many thanks Annie & Kathryn !

From Lewes, United Kingdom Jul 2010

A very well equipped clean Villa in a beautiful spot in a very unspoilt part of Italy. Good swimming pool and gardens. If you have more than two young children adults will definitley end up aleeping downstairs as you can hear alot of dogs barking at night.
The road is OK once you have done it a few times although it does ensure you to keep a clear head when returning from night time excursions.
The nearby towns are beautiful and very interseting to visit, local beaches are excellent.

We all had a very relaxing holiday It was so quite the hardest part was going home as we did not want to leave. The villa is well furnished with all our needs. The jewel in the crown was Annie who was always there when we called ( as an ex holiday rep I know she is a Gem.) Well be back.

From Dublin, Ireland Jun 2010

Have just arrived home from a fantastic two weeks at Villa Rosa.

The property is extremely comfortable and the pool is excellently situated and a very good size. We are a family of five, two adults, a teenager and two younger children and we all enjoyed every minute.

Having spent the past two years in Ostuni and having fallen for this place we discovered Cisternino this year which is a ten minute drive from Villa Rosa. It is a beautiful little town with lovely people and lots of rally good places to hang out and relax. We only spent our evenings there as the villa was so comfortable and the pool so useful that we didnt feel the need to go out during the day as we had already seen all the local famous sites.

The most important asset of Villa Rosa is without doubt the local representative, Annie Thomas. You just cannot put a price on local knowledge and expertise with fluent Italian (we had none). Annie is worth her weight in gold and was always available and ready and willing to help with all matters. Shes a gem.

You will also read comments about the road to the villa which is very narrow and an experience, but in reality no narrower than most rural Italian roads. You get used to it very quickly.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we will definitely be back.

From Tavistock, United Kingdom May 2010

The property was smaller but higher standard than anticipated,we find this is best way to approach expectations, beds comfortable, plenty of seating inside and out, good pool and you would expect to spend the bulk of the time outdoors anyway.
We heeded the requests to avoid flooding the lounge when using the shower but it never will not "flood " until the curtain is repositioned to be contained within the shower - but every holiday home has its quirks.
Annie, who looks after the property, is a real godsend helpful, full of local knowledge and a real friend in need ,she went far beyond the call of duty when my wife slipped a disc which needed twice daily visits for 4 days to the local and Brindissi hospital meeting us there and acting as interpreter and giving support taking hours of her time, helping with her friend to book early return flights - much appreciated.

What a lovely house in such a beautiful setting. The Pool was absolutely fantastic and my kids loved it.
The house had everything you needed and was just perfect for our family.
The road was very very scary to say the least but once i had done it a few times i even got into second gear!!! Make sure you get a small car!
The kids loved the dvds.
Excellent stay thank you so much.

Guest comments "Relaxing, quiet, set in beautiful countryside" Good directions, key left in key safe and villa clean and well stocked on arrival - enough to make a decent meal. Nice pool and comfortable but not luxurious accommodation. Kitchen space a bit tight so not ideal for any chefs. Third bedroom located downstairs and accessed from outside which not a problem for us as son is 20 but could be for young families. Good base to explore delightful area with beautiful towns with old town centres, good restaurants (cheap and great antipasti). Very quiet location - restful. Beaches 15 minutes drive. No air con which wasnt a major problem as temperature was around 30 during day and 20 at night. Thanks Cath Blakeman Sept 2012

Situated in the rolling hills just outside Ostuni (in Puglia), the chalet is a haven for anyone looking for peace and quite. Ideally situated for exploring Puglia - from Trulli houses to walled cities to historic ports, the chalet also offers a great place to relax and recharge the batteries, whether its sitting by the pool or enjoying the stars whilst eating freshly cooked food from the BBQ, washed down by some great southern Italian wines. And eating out is still fantastic value. Flipkey guest June 2011

Apart from the lovely pool you would not class Villa Rosa as a luxury villa, unless you count amazing views & location & a garden full of fig & almond trees as luxury - we do!! The house itself is clean & comfortable with character & the outside space is terrific - We had breakfast on the terrace, moved to the pool then barbequed in the evening. There is loads to do in this very pretty area - we were too busy visiting the lovely hilltop towns for delicious lunches & shopping (Martina Franca) to make it to any of the beaches We found driving very easy, with quiet roads winding through olive groves & even navigated & parked in some busy towns with relative ease. If you like marble floors & luxury fittings this villa is not for you, but if you want to swim relax & explore in a stunning rural location at a very reasonable price, this is perfect. 1 tip - hire a small car as road to the house involves squeezing through narrow stone walled lanes - all worth it though! "Lovely stay." Great place to chill out and relax but close enough to get to the hustle and bustle. Need a car to get about but then you get to see the place! beach about 15 min drive away. Oct 7 2011 Katy Cook stayed Summer 2011

Our stay in Villa Rosa was all we were looking for in a relaxing summer family holiday. Before we went we received really helpful instructions how to get there, what to take, what the house was like etc which made life much less stressfull. The house is well appointed with several dining areas and a good BBQ. The pool is fantastic, so good we only went to the beach a couple of times finding it much more relaxing to stay at the very peaceful villa. Local towns (Ostuni an Cisternino) good for eating out with kids and icecream, locals really friendly. We would definitely recommend it! Sarah Bristol Stayed August 2010

We had a most wonderful holiday, and I'd like to compliment you on having such a lovely (and well appointed) villa in such an idyllic location.Your directions were excellent and we had no trouble finding the villa. Brian Davies, Kent, June 2007

Thankyou, it was a most enjoyable holiday. This was helped by the fact the house was so comfortable. We also enjoyed the DVDs. Also enjoyed your music very much so that was a bonus.... I would mention that we came across a small town by chance, Oria down towards the Med coast. It was sucha surprise as there is so much history there with a Swabian castle where you can tour around. It would be good to return to the area and do some more exploring. So thank you.Mrs I Thurlow June 2006

We had a wonderful weekend in the villa. There were two couples (no kids) and it was an oasis of calm. The route to the villa winds through the fields and farms for some way off the main road - it's really very pretty and the road IS wider than it looks but do take care anyway! The villa itself is very cosy. The kitchen is well fitted out. Both the bedrooms are clean and comfortable and the lounge is well stocked with books and other diversions. The main attraction though is sitting up on the terrace balcony and watching the sun go down (or even rise as I uncharacteristically did one morning - must have been inspired). This is a place to be outside not inside. My overriding memory is of chain-eating nodini ("little knots" - a type of mozarella) with tiny juicy tomatoes, olive oil and some herbs from the garden, and sitting back feeling the sluggish hot mediterranean breeze warm and wash over me. A good trip. Top tips are: you need a car. (Ian Davidson, London, stayed summer 2005)

"If you want peace and quiet but within easy reach of quaint towns such as Ostuni and Martina Franca and beaches, then Villa Rosa is the ideal base. I spent four days there in July 2005 and enjoyed chilling out and getting away from it all but appreciated the convenience of having plenty of places to visit of interest nearby."Gail Macindoe, Leatherhead UK

"We spent a wonderful and relaxing 10-days at theVilla Rosa from 2-12 August 2005. The house wasperfect for a family of four and made a great base from which we explored the baroque splendours of Ostuni, Martina Franca, Lecce and many more. There are beaches within easy reach and if you get weary of doing battle on the Italian roads, the Villa makes a great retreat amid the almond and olive trees."Sue Walder, London
