Maratea short Historical Background
Ancient city on the Gulf of Policastro, girdled around by mountains rising above the pleasant valley, echoing the voices of its outlying hamlets, Maratea is the only portion of Lucania on the Tyrrhenian Sea, where it stretches for about 32 km, astride the provinces of Cosenza and Salerno.
Although the birth of the town cannot be dated with absolute precision, there are some unmistakable indications. For example, its name and several other place-names (Calicastro, Racia, Profiti, Filacara, Santavenere) would justify situating it in or around the Greek period, as recent archeological discoveries appear to confirm. Whereas the name and origins certainly go back to the Greek colonization, the most ancient document on the city, a bull of Alfano I, Bishop of Salerno, dates from the year 1079.
In subsequent centuries Maratea would have followed the political fortunes of southern Italy, always, however, managing to obtain from successive dynasties of the Kingdom of Naples numerous privileges for its freedom-loving people.
The town of Maratea consists of two distinct parts. A small fishing village and harbour nestle below a collection of colourful houses, restaurants and bars. Overlooking all this is Belvedere point on which stands a huge marble statue of Christ. The old town makes up the second area, perched on the hillside, with narrow streets, charming squares and a mix of shops to suit all tastes.

A wonderful property and wow the view is amazing. Only one suggestion for the villa, a small pool for just sitting in and getting cooled, the only reason why we would suggest this is, we had 2 toddlers with us and the walk or carry to and from the sea was quite hectic for them, als I was 6 months pregnant and a small pool to cool down in would have been great, rather then an ice cold shower. Our whole party enjoyed the villa and the experience of Maratea, and we would not hesitate to recommend the villa to everyone we know.

From Blackburn, United Kingdom May 2006

The villa is set in beautiful grounds and is very secure. Inside the accommodaion is well equiped and excellent for dinning indoors or out on the balcolny. The views from the balcony are magnificent, probably the best position on the entire coast. Local facilities are within a short drive and very convinient. You are well looked after during your stay by Mikele the gardner/housekeeper, just beware of his home made chilli mix! Beautiful but mighty hot!
