You will find the Castle of San Gusmè in Chianti, a beautiful medieval fortified village that appears at documents of the IX Century, following the road from Castelnuovo Berardenga to the Castle of Brolio.
The castle of San Gusmè, 465 meters over the sea level, is ideally located among castles, villas and Chianti farmhouses and can be considered one of the most characteristic buildings of Tuscany.
San Gusmé, with its ancient arches and doors, its narrow streets and its beautiful buildings has kept intact the atmosphere of the 1200, allowing the tourists to live some unforgettable moments.
The original name of the village was San Cosma e Damiano, Saints of the local Parish Church that dates back to the 1000s. There is also another Church, SS. Annunziata, that dates back to the XIV Century.

A famous website ( write about the Castle of San Gusmè:
"The little town of San Gusme was an old defense bastion for Siena. Located between Siena and Florence, it served its function for many centuries unril the black plague changed the Tuscan politics in the Middleages.
Today that bastion is a lovely village perfectly preserved and remembering the old function it fulfilled so many centuries ago. The outside portions of the castle are adorned by beautiful villas and farmhouses the Tuscan lords built during the 18th and 19th century. The inside parte is ridged by tiny narrow streets, and massive walls stare at you wile you walk through the streets until a surprisingly beautiful scenery opens in front of you and you can find yourself (as I did) staring at the horizon while the evening breeze salutes your rediscovered contact with Nature. Suddenly you want to know more about it all, but later, not today. First you want to digest this environment and make it yours, even if just for a bit. Cars pass by so rarely that it seems another time in history, and the sounds from inside the homes give you the feeling you are not a foreigner, but that someone may actually call up to you and invite you to eat with them.
Simplicity is the main thing at San Gusme, and this is the place where you want to be if you want to relax and let it all go, even if just for a little bit.
Places of interest nearby: Bossi, Gaiole in Chianti, Fietri, Monteaperti, San Felice, Brolio Castle, Meleto Castle, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Siena".

A good place from which to explore the Tuscan Region. Easy to reach from main roads, but at the same time tucked away in the heart of the countryside. Shop and restaurants are within a few yards of the front door, but do not disturb the air of being in a small village. One thing that would make a big difference would be a small air conditioning unit inside the property.(They are not allowed to have units outside of the houses) One small fan was not enough at 36 degC!! The description says Television. There wasnt one. It also says private parking. It is actually a public car park outside the village wall. The property needs a bit of TLC to bring it up to scratch.

Andrea is charming and helpful but the apartment had no coffee maker, no iron or ironing board,no air conditioning or ceiling fans and it was very hot. The shutters are on the INSIDE of the windows therefore to keep out the sun it was necessary to close the windows ! The town ischarmingand the locals friendly but it was very tiresome not to be able to cool off and we left early. The apartment would beOK in March and October but during the summer months it is hell.

The property is a great home base for visiting the Chianti region as well as tourist attractions such as the villages of San Gimignano, Monteriggioni and Volterra, as well as the city of Siena and the tourist towns south of that city. Pisa was only about 1-1/2 hours away. We didnt visit Florence, but it is about an hours drive. It was the perfect location. The tiny old fortified village of San Gusme was quaint, full of character, and peaceful. We loved the drive to get there each evening, passing vineyards and olive groves. We ate at both the "upscale" restaurant below our apartment and at the wine bar located just downstairs out our gate - our two best meals while in Italy. Although very few people spoke English within the village, we managed just fine. The atmosphere was great. We had a daily routine of sitting out in the main piazza every night for about half an our to "take it all in" before finishing off the night with a stroll through the medieval alleys. The apartment itself had pretty much everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Any minor things that it lacked we could easily get by one way or another. Living quarters are comfortable. We werent really used to the heat, and although air conditioning would have been nice, it would have taken away from the whole atmosphere. Its a bit of a hike up the stairs to the apartment, but its worth it. The view over the main piazza is priceless. The only thing I would have wished for was a balcony so we could drink our wine while overlooking the piazza. We dealt with a friendly, helpful owner who gave us a few appreciated welcoming gifts. We would definitely recommend this property to others.
Really good location for exploring Tuscany, we went to Pisa, San Gimigano, Casteligone del Lago, Siena and a few other places from here, the village is absolutely delightful!! Especially do not miss out on eating at La Porta del Chianti, best food ever we ate there 6 nights out of 7, very friendly staff and free wifi!! Owners of the apartment are very helpful and good communication, only problem we had was we felt too hot, there isnt A/c and the temps are very high in August in Italy, so that can make it a bit uncomfortable, also a washing machine would be handy as we were there for 7 nights and had to resort to hand washing some clothing. All in all though it was a stay we will remember, such a beautiful setting :)
San Gusme is a wonderful property. Set in the most picturesque area of Tuscany that we went to. A self sufficient enclosed village, with all purpose shop and 2 excellent restaurants Wi Fi and Post office. The property itself was very well equiped and pleasent. The only drawback was the fact that we were there in mid June and it was incredibly hot, being a castle the windows are small and let in little air, there is no air conditioning or even fans to cool it down. Suggest Andrea remedy this and it would be perfect. I live in South Africa and still found it far too hot for my liking.
We had a lovely time, San Gusme was a great base for visiting Chiantishire and Andrea was a great landlord!
A perfect place and lovely people
Beautiful property. Fantastic views. Friendly, helpful staff. We have stayed at Antico Castello di San Gusmè twice and both stays were quite positive. The Castle have an authentic, Tuscan quality.
What a gorgeous property! Breathtaking scenery, huge rooms, great staff! Unbelievable value for the money. Wonderful wonderful wonderful.
Beautiful property. Fantastic views. Friendly, helpful staff. We have stayed at Antico Castello di San Gusmè twice, and both stays were quite positive.
we were not 100% satisfied with the cleanliness - I had to clean the bathroom after we arrived - there was also a horrible smell coming from the bathroom so we had to leave the fan running 24 hrs.
We had a wonderful time at this accommodation. The owners were hospitable, kind and gracious. They were helpful and we relied on their superb advice regarding local restaurants, not one a bad one. We ate like kings in local and nearby places. We also spent time relaxing at the property with only the sound of frantic bumble bees to disturb our Tuscan peace. We enjoyed graden chairs and the table and ate foods acquired at the local supermarket and Chianti from the region--a dream come true. We visited daily a new Medieval hilltop town as well as Siena, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, Montalcino, Pienza, Montepulciano, Florence, Pisa and Volterra, all an easy drive and using backroads rather than highways a delight. This holiday was for us in every way a pleasure and a delight. The property met with all our romantic expectations as did Tuscany! If one wants to have a vacation where one is self-sufficent and independant this is it exactly. The property is well appointed and charming with all the Tuscan charm and sense of antiquity one so relishes. This is a very real place and one can experience an authentic Tuscany here!
