Villa overview - owner's description

'A magical retreat' as featured in The Telegraph (UK) 23.03.2013 - see our website for details and special offers!

Welcome to your exclusive retreat in Sicily… Set 'away from it all' on a fabulous hill top position overlooking the sparkling Ionian Sea in the Mediterranean, the villa boasts breathtaking and unrivalled views stretching across from Mount Etna to the surrounding area of Taormina on the east coast of Sicily.

The villa is a traditionally built stone detached property, with air conditioning and its own private 'infinity edge' swimming pool and garden. Completely independent, the villa assures you total privacy. A large panoramic terrace and shaded patio, with a barbecue and built-in pizza oven, offer ample ‘al fresco' dining space from which, at near 500 meters altitude, you will truly feel on top of the world.

Inside, furnished and equipped to a high standard, the villa provides and caters for the expectations of the discerning modern traveller, whether you are holidaying as a couple, family or with friends. The villa can accommodate up to 8 people (6 adults max) +2 infants.

The charm and attraction of the villa do not end there, from having the space and privacy to do whatever you please, at your own pace… or nothing at all, to visiting the area of Taormina, Castelmola and Giardini-Naxos, and local beaches all within a 20-30 minute drive. For sightseeing, Mount Etna, the Alcantara Gorge, the Aeolian islands including Stromboli, the villa provides an excellent and comfortable base in a rural and quiet location.

Whether it is tranquillity, culture, sun, beaches, sightseeing or living 'la dolce vita' you are looking for, we await you... a presto!

Dan and Katharine

Unbelievable views - No words can truly describe this place. Plenty of opportunities for making memorable memories. The pool was clean and relaxing. Being able to look out at the water and hear the pool gave it a tranquil touch. Fruit trees and Nuts even a banana tree. The beds were extremely comfortable. Would I stay here again.... I did not wanna leave... Absolutely one of a kind. The owners were always reachable and very professional.

Simply stunning - Our family's wanderlust means we never revisit a holiday location - we will however be making an exception with this gorgeous villa, and it's most beautiful, stunning views. The villa's elevated mountainside location provides stunning panoramic views. Cooling off in the swimming pool you admire the imposing Mount Etna, the coastal, village dotted, plain below and then out to the Mediterranean Sea. Glance over your shoulder and there are a few super-yachts anchored near Giardini-Naxos and the historic Taormina. The villa itself (pretty and blended well into the environment) was very clean, comfortable and had more than enough space for our 4 adults and 3 teenagers. There was certainly nothing we were in need of and air conditioned bedrooms meant a cool night's sleep for all. Although we weren't about to use them in the heat of Summer, there is a wood burning fireplace, plus terrace pizza oven and BBQ (presumably for the cooler late Autumn/Winter guests). The graduated depth swimming pool was lovely - clean and checked every other day by an unobtrusive pool cleaner - and a small shaded grass/garden area beyond was a relaxing venue for evening sundowners. Excluding terracing, the villa is on a relatively small mountainside site but somehow it never felt as such. The English owners were incredibly helpful, even checking up with us on day 2 of our holiday to make sure everything was o.k. Any negatives..? The mobile 3G/4G wi-fi is patchy, so streaming internet content was not an option (but why waste life when you have those views!) however it was sufficient for emails and other quick browsing even if it took several connection attempts. The drive up the mountain to the villa is, as one might expect, winding and the owners say might not be for the very nervous driver. However, the owners organise a local, driving in front, to guide you on arrival, and frankly, if you are able to hold your nerve driving amongst the southern Italians this should be no real issue. The views are certainly worth the drive up. Lovely & peaceful, within driving distance to many activities, and a gorgeous panorama - we will be back. Thank you for a wonderful holiday location.

En villa vi bestemt vil anbefale:-) Translated by Google: Fantastic house - Have just had a wonderful holiday in Villa Etna Mara. A house with stunning views and many delicious details. And the road to it can be exciting, but you will be safely taken there on arrival. The pool is super. Has a suitable size and our girls could bump at one end. The house itself is really cozy. However, we spent most of the time on the large fantastic terrace or in the pool :-) Dan and Katharina have always been extremely helpful. Both up and down the holiday. A villa we would definitely recommend :-)

A Sicilian delight - It was our first trip to Sicily as a family. We arrived after sundown and were glad of the meet and greet service to take us up the hill to the villa. I won't lie, the first time driving up the winding road in the dark was scary. However as the week wore on and we were up and down each day we got used to it. We awoke to discover the most amazing view of both Etna, the sea, Castelmola, Taormina and Giardini Naxos. Truly spectacular. The temperatures were in the high 30s the entire week and the fabulous pool really came into its own to keep us cool and we really appreciated the air con in the bedrooms guaranteeing comfortable sleeping. The villa is extremely well appointed, the kitchen having every utensil and facilities necessary to eat in. We used the BBQ and made our own pizzas (from scratch!) which was great great fun. There's a very informative user guide with info on everything you might have a query on and a great DVD library if you want to watch a movie before bed. Wifi was an added bonus but is possibly not as fast as you may have at home. This wasn't an issue for us...relaxing, swimming, eating and drinking with THAT VIEW was what we enjoyed. The only downside was that you definitely cannot walk down the hill into town. A car is therefore essential, but it's a great base from which to tour eastern Sicily. Taormina is fantastically picturesque (we did a three hour segway tour), we discovered all the main highlights and even managed to watch a Sicilian wedding in the Duomo! Great local produce in Giardini Naxos. We had a truly memorable holiday at Villa Etna Mare, thank you Dan and Katherine.

Beautiful property with amazing views - Beautiful property that lived up to all our expectations and more. Great location with spectacular views, we would thoroughly recommend it as a place to unwind and sample the best of Italian culture. Dan and Katherine's attention to every detail from arranging a welcoming meet and greet service to a thorough helpful household manual was much appreciated. We definitely hope to return soon.

An absolute gem! - We thoroughly enjoyed our week away staying at Villa Etna Mare. The villa is well located for absolutely fabulous views across Etna and beyond. The drive up the mountain on the first day was a little scary but we were soon used to the roads and our little Vauxhall Corsa did excellently!!! We visited with my two children, my partner and my partners mother. my children loved it, they enjoyed the swimming pool (although being mid-April it was a bit chilly!) and loved exploring the villa and gardens. My mother in law thoroughly enjoyed her first trip abroad! On arrival, we were greeted with a lovey bottle of Prosecco. Alessio, our guide up the mountain, was very pleasant and cheery. Dan and Katherine were excellent hosts and were very helpful. It was a nice touch for them to text and ask how our first day was. We shall definitely be staying again some time in the future! I would thoroughly recommend Villa Etna Mare to anyone wishing to stay in Sicily. There is plenty to do within a 25 minute drive. The locals were lovely and extremely helpful (despite my poor attempt at Italian!!)

A perfect place to hide! Away from all. But with all the comfort needed and a Italian touch. Nothing to say more really. The most remote villa we ever rent. But everything went perfectly. Had most of my communications with Dan the owner (in French which I really appreciated!). He was always there to make everything perfect. Views, pool, cleanliness, written instructions.... Everything was as promised. As I said in a review before: should I recommend it? Not sure as if I'm doing so, I'll have less choices for my next holidays there! PS. As we were advised, don't expect a fast internet over there. After all if you pay to be so far of everything, don't you really need it?

Lovely villa with stunningly beautiful views - Just come back from a week at this beautiful villa which really gave us the best of both worlds - we were near enough to be able to taxi down to Taormina to attend a family wedding, but also very happy to come back to afterwards for peace and awesome views you would't ever tire of. Don't know how many photos I took looking across to Castelmola or over towards Etna but none of them did it justice! Yes the drive up is a bit scary, especially arriving at night as we did - thank goodness for the meet and greet service to show you the way - but we soon got used to it, and it's so worth it to be up there. The villa is clean and well equipped, and the pool is beautiful. The owners Dan and Katherine were very helpful and super-informative beforehand and responsive to any queries we had during our stay. We organised taxis through the contact they had given us - worth noting that it's best to book taxis that way in advance as apparently the normal Taormina ones aren't very keen to come up the mountain. We also appreciated the shopping on arrival service as, as you can't exactly just pop out for some bread in the morning - much nicer to have an early swim! Thank you Dan and Katherine for a wonderful holiday.

Breathtaking views - First: very good customer service. All was described very exactly . If there was a (small) problem, the owner helped us immediately. The house is very good equipped and weel kept. For us it was not only just an accomodation - it was a home! We can recommend it to everybody who wants to get away from the busy streets and places in Taormina and Giardini Naxos.

Excellent facilities, stunning view and position - We have just returned from a great holiday in Sicily. The weather was fabulous if you like it hot.The villa is a wonderful haven for relaxation and family fun. The owners offer an exceptional standard of villa, providing everything you need in a clean, well kept environment. The owners were always willing to respond to us by return on any matter relating to the villa, which helped make our stay a memorable, first-class relaxing family holiday . The Villa's pool was the best that we have ever had, with breath-taking views all around the sun terrace. Being situated high up in the mountains, the villa is in a perfect position with a perfect temperature for bathing and relaxing in the sun. Taormina is within easy distance of the villa, with a bustling night life and good restaurants. The children loved Etnaland water park in Catania. Gole Alcantara was also a great place to visit. You will definitely need a car to get to this villa location. The journey to the villa is not for the faint-hearted, but the view is so worth it. After one or two trips you are well used to the journey up the mountain (taking approx. 15 - 20 minutes). The view from the villa remained spectacular throughout our stay. You feel like you are still on the plane! A very big thank you and a strong recommendation for Villa Etna Mare. A thoroughly relaxing holiday in a stunning villa and location.

Rebecca V. Jul 2016

Relaxing villa with amazing views - We had a lovely week staying in your villa above Taormina. The villa was spotless, well equipped and the view from the terrace and pool was out of this world! We had amazing weather and were very glad of the air conditioning in the bedrooms! We would certainly recommend this villa for people wanting to explore the Ionian coast, Mount Etna etc but who want to be away from the busy coastal resorts. We would strongly advise people to do their shopping before going up to the villa or if, like us, their flight arrives late, to take advantage of the essentials welcome pack service (don't forget to book this at least two weeks before you arrive) as it is a bit of a trek up a pretty rough, steep road/track to get to the villa from the nearest town. The owners, Dan and Katharine were very helpful and informative. All in all, a great holiday!

Andrea E. Jun 2016

Amazing view - The location was absolutely amazing with stunning view over the sea and Etna. The pool was great and everything was perfectly clean. The villa was much nicer than I thought just looking at the pictures at the websideadressen. All contact with the owner was very quick answers.

A little piece of tranquility! - We had a wonderful time here! The view from the villa is mesmerising - an absolutely beautiful view of the sea and Mount Etna! The pool and terrace area are wonderful - we spent many happy and lazy days enjoying the sunshine. The villa is a good 20 minute drive from the nearest town, so you definitely need to plan your shopping! It is the perfect place to escape to and unwind!

Exceptional place with high standards - The villa and its location are truly exceptional, and the photos on the website just can't beat being there gazing in all directions. We have now been to several luxury villas, but this has been far and away the best (the best: organisation / kitchen / beds / communication... I could go on). It's pretty much perfect! Definitely would recommend for families with young children or groups of friends/adults who enjoy a relaxing holiday with the odd trip out; nearest restaurant is about a 20 minute drive away which suited us fine though for that reason I don't think the villa would suit anyone who wanted to dine out every evening (so bear that in mind) but the villa's facilities were brilliant.

Great holiday rental - It's the best holiday we have ever had. From the moment we enquired we knew we were dealing with conscientious owners. Dan and Katherine clearly go to a lot of trouble to ensure their holiday home matches the requirements of their guests. Before we booked we received a very comprehensive fact sheet, which really helped us in our decision to book this one. When we arrived at the villa, everything was as expected. The views are simply stunning and the pool, villa layout, accommodation cleanliness and equipment superb. We hired the cook one night and then a taxi to Taormina and back on another night. We wanted a self catering family break in a quiet location and wanted to visit the area around Mount Etna in a week so from our perspective we got exactly what we wanted, staying in a great villa.

Hi there! We're Dan and Katharine and we live in Nottingham, England with our 3 young children. We both work full time in IT and telecommunications respectively and so we try to 'escape' to Sicily whenever we can, to spend quality time there in our holiday home with our children and friends or other family members.

Why we chose Sicily and this area

We first visited Sicily in 2001 and instantly fell in love with the area: the elegance and chic of Taormina, the bustling bars, restaurants and beaches of Giardini-Naxos, the beautiful and much quieter village of Castelmola, and of course Mount Etna: she never ceases to surprise us! The local culture, history, food and climate obviously played a big part and we found the local people incredibly friendly and welcoming. The area is also easily accessible with Catania airport less than an hour's drive away.

What makes this villa unique

We viewed many properties in the area before finding this villa and it really was a matter of “love at first sight”. We still remember that moment in November 2005, standing on the terrace mesmerized by the view out to the sea across to Etna and thinking to ourselves: this is the one! We've made many improvements since both on the inside and the outside of the villa and had a swimming pool built in 2008 but to this day it still remains the breathtaking views, the blissful tranquility of the location and intense feeling of spaciousness that makes our holiday home so special to us, as it does to our many regular guests from all around the world!
