Villa overview - owner's description

Enjoy sweeping views of the lake and mountain from this luxurious five-bedroom Tuscan villa with private swimming pool in the beautiful hills of eastern Tuscany.

Enjoy sweeping views of the lake and mountain from this luxurious five-bedroom villa with private swimming pool in the beautiful hills of eastern Tuscany. An ideal holiday retreat with easy access to destinations in Tuscany, Umbria and beyond.

Casa Singerna has been converted from a 300-year-old stone barn. Although it has come a long way from its humble beginnings, original features have been retained and materials reused wherever possible to preserve its original character with chestnut beamed ceilings, hand-made pianelle ceiling tiles, cut stone doors and window surrounds, wrought iron railings and hardware.

The interior boasts high ceilings and open spaces filled with natural light. Windows are generous and afford sweeping views of the surrounding countryside that are never short of breath-taking. Mature oak trees surround the house and provide welcome shade on hot summer days.

The design, restoration and selection of materials were overseen personally by the previous owners who took a hands-on approach to the project and did a lot of the actual work, from the reclaiming of ceiling tiles to the building and installation of windows and doors. Casa Singerna has been carefully finished by hand, and it is this resulting individuality that lends the building its specific character.

The villa is on two levels and is positioned on a hillock so that both floors have ground level access. The main entrance is on the upper level, where there is parking for several cars, a wide terrace with a pergola and tables and chairs adjacent to the pool. On this upper level occupying the four corners of the villa are four bedrooms. The remaining bedroom is on the lower floor with direct access to the rear terrace with tables and chairs.

The open plan space on the lower floor serves as the dining area, sitting room and kitchen. The focus of the room is on the grand archway with glass doors that frames a view of the lake. A long, sturdy, hand-made table of chestnut wood with seating for ten and more is well positioned to enjoy the view.

The kitchen is positioned to the left of the arched doorway. The workspace was designed to offer convenience and comfort in preparing meals, regardless of whether you wish to toss together something simple or cook up an elaborate feast. We didn't however sacrifice beauty for usability. The cabinets are hand-made of chestnut wood with wrought iron fittings and a fantastic granite work surface. There is also a microwave, coffee maker, and other useful equipment. Several wooden stools are positioned at the counter for casual snacking or comfort while you prepare a meal. There is a dishwasher to free you from washing up, and a washing machine for your private use.

Sofas and chairs in the opposite corner surround a wood-burning stove, perfect for autumn and winter breaks.

Arched glass doors lead to the spacious rear terrace paved in stone and tile. Ample seating is provided for outdoor dining in the shade of an oak tree and for enjoying the fabulous view of the lake and surrounding countryside. There is also a barbecue on the back terrace.

A brick arch in the hallway frames the arched door that leads from the living area into the Terrace Bedroom. This is the only bedroom on the lower floor of the villa and has access through doors onto the rear terrace. The king size bed is handmade of rich chestnut wood and has a charming seating area that has been arranged against a wall of exposed stone.

The spacious en-suite bathroom has a bathtub that is also fitted with a shower. Travertine marble in earthy colours surround the bathtub and mirror over the washbasin. There is a washing machine that is conveniently set into the cabinet beneath the counter. The bathroom has an additional door into the lower hallway.

Against the interior wall of the living area are wooden stair treads that seemingly float to the upper floor.

Rooms upstairs radiate off of a central hallway with an impressive four-meter high chestnut beamed and terracotta tiled ceiling. Furnishing and decorating has been executed with taste throughout the villa in a style that is casual and uncluttered. All bedrooms have handmade beds of wood or wrought iron furnished with comfortable firm mattresses, tasteful furniture and beautiful antiques. The bathrooms are spacious and offer good natural light.

The hand-made four-poster bed of the Lakeside Bedroom is strikingly offset against the exposed stone of the wall and the smooth wood of the floor. Double doors lead onto a balcony with a traditionally styled wrought-iron railing boasting a spectacular view of the lake, olive trees and the vineyard. Beside the door to the bathroom is a spacious walk-in closet. Other furnishings include comfortable chairs and a handsome antique carved cabinet.

The en-suite bathroom features a corner bathtub with room for two. The floor, tub and sink surround are of travertine marble in soft tones, highlighted by a border design. The bathtub is fitted with an overhead and a hand-held shower.

The Sunset Bedroom is the most grand and spacious of the bedrooms with a four meter high ceiling at the peak and one wall given over almost entirely to windows. There are fabulous views of the surrounding countryside. Thankfully, a mature tree at the side of the house filters the glare of the afternoon sun. The king size bed is a hand-made wrought iron piece commissioned by a local craftsman. A wood stove positioned between the windows serves as focus for a small seating area. There is also a pair of beautiful antique wardrobes. There is separate access to the room from the front terrace through a pair of French doors.

The Valley View Bedroom is striking and there is something about the proportions of the room and the placement of the windows that makes this an extremely welcoming space. There are two large windows providing between them views through more than 180 degrees up and down the Singerna river valley to the lake. The room is furnished with a pair of twin beds.

The Aquarium bathroom is accessed from the hallway on the upper floor. There is a spacious tiled shower stall with adjustable height shower and glass door. The wall tiles are of famed Murano glass, inlaid with the occasional hand-blown glass fish. The shower floor is a mosaic of glass tile in rich shades of blue and copper. Natural light floods the room from the skylight in the peaked ceiling.

A door from the ingresso, where the baby grand piano resides, leads into the Studio Bedroom. The stone surrounded window looks out across the vineyard to the lake. Seating by the piano easily serves as additional space for the occupants. This room is furnished with a double bed.

From the front terrace, the main doors of Casa Singerna open into a room with terracotta tiled floor, exposed stone walls and a high beamed ceiling. The room is home to an antique baby grand piano.

The piano was built in 1900 in Austria. It is well preserved for its age and has a modern style sound board but old-fashioned mechanisms that give it a characteristic sound.

The pool has wide Roman stairs descending into the shallow end of the 6 x 12 meter (20 x 40 foot) private swimming pool. The ample surrounding terra cotta paved terrace (200 square meters) offers seating in sun and shade. There are pool lounge chairs around the pool.

There is a croquet pitch at the villa as well as a table tennis table.

You can practice archery in Caprese Michelangelo, a ten minute drive from the villa or there are bows and arrows and a target on the lawn.

Tennis courts can be booked in Caprese Michelangelo, a ten minute drive from the villa. They provide raquets and balls so you can just show up and play

Cooking classes can be arranged for groups of people. Courses are taught in English and concentrate on general principles and traditional but relevant foods. Menu options can be arranged with the instructor ahead of time. The course ends with a luncheon 'in famiglia' where you can enjoy the fruits of your labours. The course can include an excursion to the market to gather your fresh ingredients. Cooking courses are popular with all ages and abilities and have been given as a surprise holiday gift on a number of occasions. Children especially love the hands on experience of making fresh pasta.

There are bicycles available for on or off road cycling, although very basic. There are hundreds of kilometres of marked walking trails in the area. For the more adventurous there are trails that extend great distances across the mountains. Or you can simply enjoy the paths that begin directly at your door and lead through the vineyard, by the creek and into the forest.

There is a golf course outside of Perugia, an hour's drive from Casa Singerna. And only twenty minutes away there is a smaller and more casual golf course. Be sure to bring a golf membership card to be allowed onto a course.

There is a famous antique market held in Arezzo on the first Sunday of each month and the preceding Saturday (except for August). There are other good antique stores in Sansepolcro, Anghiari, Montone and Gubbio. For traditional ceramics you can visit Deruta, Gubbio or Passignano sul Trasimeno. There are several outlet stores for shoes and designer Italian clothing in the vicinity, including a Prada outlet in Montevarchi. You will find more shopping options listed in the house book available in the house.

Each day of the week you can visit a local market in a different neighbouring villages. These markets offer produce, clothing and other household goods.

As you would expect from Tuscany, there are some super sightseeing trips to experience. Amongst the many sites are the following. Anghiari, voted one of Italy’s most special medieval hilltop towns is nine minutes away. Arezzo, of Etruscan origin with Roman influence in the Chianti wine district is on the main railway line and is thirty minutes away. Assisi, St Francis, a spiritual haven, is an hour away. Caprese Michelangelo, birthplace of the famous sculptor is fifteen minutes away. Città di Castello in Umbria has many museums, churches and hand painted ceramics, just twenty five minutes from the villa. Florence, with its Duomo, Old Bridge, Uffizi Gallery and Medici family palaces is ninety minutes away. La Verna, a significant Monastery and sanctuary with breathtaking views of the Casentino National Park is thirty minutes away. The university town of Perugia with it many churches and museums is an hour away. Sansepolcro, the birthplace of Piero della Francesca and his ‘Resurrection’ Museo Civico is just twenty minutes’ drive.

To enjoy the pleasure of eating at the villa without the trouble of preparing the food, meals can be arranged for you. The focus is on home-style regional cuisine. Pricing is based on the number of people and the selected menu. Please inquire for more details.

A complementary welcome basket with bread, milk, tea and coffee etc will be in the villa on your arrival.

Weddings and special birthday events are fabulous at the villa. We have had dinner parties for thirty or more guests seated on the pool terrace. If you would like to throw a party for more guests, we can arrange accommodation in other local villas.

Guests can be collected from Perugia, Pisa, Florence, Bologna or Rome airports however we recommend having a car for exploring locally.

The gas is metered and payable on the day of departure. A bundle of logs will be supplied and thereafter are chargeable if they are required.

Our party was 2 adults and 8 'children' aged 19 to 21, the villa was perfect for us. It is in an ideal position, near the charming town of Anghiari and close enough to many major cities - we had a wonderful time in Florence and at the Feast of the Saracens and Antique Fair in Arezzo. The villa has a lovely atmosphere, the pool is glorious and Sue is the perfect host, a mine of useful information.

A great villa to unwind and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of Eastern Tuscany. The area is a hidden gem, not totally over-run by tourists, but there is a wealth of beautiful local countryside and all the famous places are in close reach. Also an amazing assorment of great places to eat locally. The villa itself is clean and tidy with all the necessary needs for the traveller. A great bonus is the open-plan kitchen/dining/living area which is unusual with these type of farmhouse/villa places which often only have small rooms. It is a great place to socialise if you are not all crowded round the pool! Sue Hill is a great host - welcoming and very obliging.

Sydney Jul 2014

We stayed here in July, our family of 5 and my sister-in-law's family of 4. It was the perfect size for 2 families. The villa is lovely, if a little dated (the photos are better than the real thing, which is just a little more 'lived in' than you might expect). The layout of the villa is great, 4 bedrooms upstairs and 1 downstairs. An excellent open plan living area, but the highlight is the terrace outside the kitchen, and the pool. Both are just stunning. The pool is a great size, with an incredible view. Another highlight was the local town, Anghiari - we went there many times for dinner, lunch and the weekly markets. A really gorgeous town with hardly any tourists, great restaurants (and gelato). We made a day trip to Siena which took about 90 mins. We would highly recommend this villa and stay there again.

Hill Jul 2014

This villa is situated in the Tuscan hills overlooking a beautiful reservoir to the right and rolling hills up the valley to the left. The building is a converted farmhouse with ample room and a great open plan living, dining, kitchen area which is perfect for large groups. A balance of dole and twin rooms make it perfect for large numbers. Pool area had lovely loungers and offered similar views. 1 terrace by the pool is covered with a stunning floral pagoda. Another is uncovered on the bottom terrace for a sunnier mealtime. Walk down to the lake is fairly steep but worth the reward; fresh water swimming and a manmade waterfall make for a great afternoon activity. I'd recommend this building to anyone for families, large younger groups and anyone else looking for a Tuscan retreat. Sue Hill, the owner, is more than helpful and always on hand to smooth over any cracks.

Pie Jun 2014

We spent an amazing 2 weeks at the Casa from mid to end of June. We traveled with our 3 adult kids, my parents and their aid. The house was able to accommodate all of us comfortably. The house is located in a remote part of Tuscany where life is simple and much of the commerce involves farming. It's close to a magnificent medieval city, Anghiari. Sue Hill, who owns the house and lives in a cottage below the house, is absolutely charming and we loved getting to know her. We spent many an evening on her porch, sipping a good wine, looking out at the lake and the rolling hills and the hay bales, talking history, politics and family. Through Sue we contacted by Laura and Toni (the chef and her sidekick) who came over and cooked several wonderful meals for us! Oh, how I long for Laura's panne cote (I think that's what it was called) and Charlie's chocolate cake --- oh, and yes, the pasta too!! The meals were fabulous --- and they cleaned up too! All in all, it was a vacation we will never forget. We explored lots of the local towns and villages (many not too touristy), hung out in the hills, got a good feel for the people and the culture. It was wonderful.

I have been coming to Casa Singerna for six years now, usually off season. I've looked at many other options, even in other countries, but there has never been a more wonderful place to come so I always return to Singerna. I love being off the beaten tourist path, enjoy fantastic food in local restaurants, and enjoy the peace and quiet of the hills. Susan is a delightful owner/proprietor who is happy to help you with any plans you may have, all while giving you the villa all to yourself. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, particularly if you are from the United States. Bonnie Guzman

Toronto Jan 2012

We stayed at Casa Singerna during the winter months and completely fell in love with it all over again (as we had stayed there in a previous year). The location is 10 minutes from anghiari, a medieval village, 15 minutes from Caprese Michelangelo, and one hour from Florence. The villa itself is so charming with 5 bedrooms all with beamed ceilings, 3 great bathrooms and a large living/dining room with a view to die for! We were so happy to have Sue, the owner, close by , as she was a great source of information and an absolute delight to be with. The swim pool and pergola overlook the valley and is surrounded with lavender, sage, rosemary and cypress trees. We were so lucky to have found this wonderful villa and felt we could have lived there for the rest of our lives. We highly recommend this enchanting Tuscan villa. Sandy and Blair Forsyth Canada

I rent out villas in the Algarve and also our two family villas in Tuscany. I first visited the Algarve as a young child in 1965 and haven’t stopped spending my holidays there. I spent several happy years during the eighties running my own business and therefore have an extensive knowledge of the Central Algarve. I absolutely love Portugal and its wonderful people and want you to find it as magical a place as I have done over the years. I have recently taken over the rental of our two beautiful villas in Tuscany and hope that you will find it as magical as I have done in the last few years
