Col di Lavacchio is a 22 acre farm in northern Tuscany nestling on a ridge below the dramatic peak of Pania del Croce. With sensational views of the Appenines to the south and east, Lavacchio serves as a perfect base for an action-packed adventure, a cultural feast or an indulgent rest by the pool. Whether you want to hang glide from a crag or attend the Puccini festival, to amble amongst the olives or spot wild boar in the chestnut forest, at Lavacchio we can tailor make your holiday to fit your requirements.
The small town of Barga is a draw for artists and photographers whilst Castelnuovo is the hub of activity for the Garfagnana region with its extensive national park. Further afield, Lucca is well worth a day trip for its excellent boutique shops and profusion of churches. Florence is 90 minutes away by car and we can help book you into the various galleries given sufficient notice. However, if you want to stay at home and enjoy the the Garfagnana, this is an area rooted in tradition and unspoilt by mass tourism where Italians come to sample the real Tuscany.

The farmhouse (la Fattoria) with apartment (la Stalla)
The old farmhouse at Lavacchio was completely renovated in 2004 and whilst the traditional features, such as the chestnut beams, were retained the house was fitted with smart modern appliances to make your stay a comfortable one. There are five bedrooms (double or twin) and three bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and a comfortable sitting room with an open fire. Two terraces for al fresco eating and a working pizza oven mean that time spent indoors is kept to a minimum.
Facilities include: dishwasher, microwave oven, washing machine, 5 ring gas hob and oven with electric grill, 2 fridges, CD player, DVD/Video and TV, central heating. All linen is included.
The ground floor apartment 100m away has 2 large double/twin rooms, a sitting room with sofa-bed and a small but well equipped kitchen. The bathroom has a huge wet area shower. The loggia outside, with the spa pool (winter only) provides welcome shade and a romantic dinner setting.

Your holiday
A car is essential at Lavacchio to allow you to shop locally in a range of supermarkets and village markets and to explore hill top towns and Tuscanys historic sites. The track into the property is extremely narrow and you may wish to leave your car in Promiana (500m). We supply a small courtesy car for guests to use. There is a huge number of restaurants within 15 mins drive or alternatively let us take the strain out of holiday cooking. A selection of produce is available ranging from eggs to fresh fruit and vegetables in season. There are masses of herbs all over the property.
Meals can be served by prior arrangement on the terrace: these can range from a 4 course dinner to a pizza evening or barbeque.
Cookery courses are also available.
Walking tours can be arranged with 24 hours notice, either a Wild day trip to the peaks and ridges or a Mild walk exploring villages and small towns at a gentler pace.

The farmhouse, apartment and pool are set in 22 acres of Tuscany in an outstanding position offering comfort and privacy within reach of Lucca and Florence.

Property is excellent and in a very peaceful spot with superb views to Serchio valley and the surrounding mountains. High standard of refurbishment in the property itself which is accompanied by a large swimming pool (certainly much larger than current photos on this site would suggest). Access to the house is via a narow road which, if you don't want to negotiate with your hire car, can be driven along using the supplied Ford Fiesta (aka the Lavacchio banger!). Nearest restaurant is 15 minutes walk away and many more within a 15 minute drive; a 5 minute drive takes you to Gallicano for local shops and supermarkets as well as a train station to access Lucca (and beyond). The property also has its own pizza oven and the very friendly owners offer a pizza evening if you're that way inclined. Summary - if you want peace and quite and total relaxation while surrounded by superb countryside, good food, wonderful hill walks then you cannot go wrong selecting this property.

A hillside paradise - the views are amazing and the way the property has been renovated makes the most of the beautiful setting. The owners have achieved the perfect combination of comfort and rustic charm and their generous and thoughtful hospitality made our holiday truly memorable. We’ll be back.
Excellent location and views. We went during March when it was not particularly warm, but still had a wonderful time. We had snow on one day and that only enhanced the beauty of the locale and the kids had a wonderful time! Great local walks, beautiful little villages to visit locally, excellent fresh local produce seafood available at local markets. A few caveats: access to the property involves a 1km walk from the car park, not really practical for small children, the elderly or individuals with disabilities. Beware of the fuel surcharge: we spent 260 euros for 7 days, adding considerably to the total holiday cost; excellent gourmet meals served by the owners but at premium rates - probaly cheaper to eat out, significantly cheaper to cook oneself.
Owner reply:

Access to the property is 500m along a track negotiable with a small car. They had been informed of this before their holiday. We supply a car for our guests and they also had a small car but they insisted on walking. They managed to use quarter of a tank of fuel in the week heating the house to 30C even when they were out for the day. We supply free fire wood for the wood burning stove (which would have heated the entire house) which they declined to use.The winter surcharge for gas is based upon the amount used. They didn't have a gourmet meal, they had supper left for them on arrival. Our rates are competitive with the local restaurants and surely it is always cheaper to cook for yourself than have a chef come to cook for you?

Nice house, beautifull location, kind cowners. We had a good time.
Lavacchio was a fantastic choice for our group of 13. We could inhabit the entire property comfortably and the owners were very friendly and helpful. It was nice that they spoke both English and Italian. The property is accurately represented on the website: charming with much attention to comfort and detail, centrally situated for day trips, quiet and yet fun for teens.
Really amzing - the tastiest three weeks of my life: Jamie Murray, Uzbekistan.Glorious weather under a Tuscan sun, fabulous company with great food and wine: David Sweet, NZHeaven in the hills: Colin Pettigrew, NZFantastic. Five star service. We will definitely be back: Morag McLean, Perthshire, Scotland
