Villa overview - owner's description

Historic stone mansion house recently renovated in Pelion, an area of outstanding undisturbed natural beauty rising from the Aegean, ideal for touring due to the many activities & sights available

Property layout: The house is set over 4 floors. The lower floor houses a relaxation area, the ground floor has a kitchen, living area and breakfast area, and the top 2 floors have 4 rooms each making up the 8 bedrooms (individual rooms may also be booked as well as the entire house).

At the end of the 19th Century many expatriate Greeks who had made their fortunes trading in North Africa & Asia Minor had the opportunity to return at the end of Ottoman rule. Many built large mansion houses in Pelion which now characterizes the local architecture. The Lotus Tree is one such example built in 1884 in the Neoclassic style with 1 meter thick stone walls, by a Greek tobacco merchant returning from Egypt. The house was occupied until the great earthquake of 1953-4 when the top story was severely damaged and the house closed. On re-opening in 2005 many items including books and magazines were discovered and displayed throughout the house.

The house was fully renovated 2011 with the recovery of the top floor and traditional Pelion slate roof. Local craftsman used Pelion stone & wood in the renovation added to which are modern comfort and standards. Guests can wake in individually styled sound-proofed rooms with superior beds before a rich traditional homemade breakfast using fresh local produce. During your stay you may choose from a wide variety of tailor made tours & activities or simply enjoy refreshments in the cozy fireside lounge or on the garden terrace beneath the sun shades and panoramic views. A range of Double, Triple & Family en-suite rooms are offered and a 70 sq m relaxation suite has been added containing changing facilities tropical rain shower & a large 5 person Jacuzzi with lounge area

The Lotus Tree is located in Pelion, the famous mountain of the Centaurs (Location of ‘Mama Mia’), an un-spoilt area of outstanding natural beauty rising out of the Aegean Sea to a maximum height of 1610 Mtrs. A popular tourist destination for over 60 years Pelion is famous for its variety in activities as a consequence of its unique mix of forest mountain stream & Seascape. Of particular interest are the many beautiful beaches and ancient hiking trails cris-crossing the area with stone bridges & waterfalls set against the photographic backdrop of mountain & sea. Combined with the healthy Pelion air, local cuisine and many modern & ancient sites of interest, the area is popular for touring holidays & short breaks away from the city.

The Lotus Tree is situated in an ideal spot to take advantage of these activities. It is located in the centre of Portaria, one of the most popular and accessible of the 25 picturesque villages of the peninsula, being the first village reached from Volos. It is just a minute’s walk to the main square with its tavernas, coffee shops, local markets & craft shops, yet just away from traffic noise amidst spectacular day & night time views to the city of Volos, Makrinitsa & the Pelion Mountains which can be enjoyed from the rooms or outdoor areas. Portaria itself has been the centre of luxury tourism in Pelion for decades due to its proximity to the touristic port city of Volos with its airport & major road, rail & sea transport links (12km) and its reach of the wider Pelion region making it an ideal touring base.

Stayed January 2014, traveled as a couple We spent the holidays of Epiphany day at “The Lotus Tree” in Portaria. The Lotus Tree is a renovated mansion sited at the center of Portaria village with an excellent view to the nearby village Makrynitsa and to the city of Volos. The minimal rooms exude warmth, cleanliness and homely feel. Cleanliness as well as friendly hospitality is some of the positive characteristics in accordance with the value for money rate. Hope to have the opportunity to visit again the naturalist area and to have the pleasure of staying at the Lotus Tree again. Stayed May 2013, traveled as a couple Enjoy your stay there!!! The room and the communal spaces were always clean. We were also impressed by the fact that we could use the jacuzzi or we could drink coffee without an extra charge not to mention the reasonable price of the room. Enjoy your stay there!!! Friendly, considerate, smiley, helpful, communicative and also a very good cooker. In general it s what we call "value for money".
