Manoir Anoir is located just minutes from the banks of the Loire River, in the Maine-et-Loire department close to the border with Indre-et-Loire, 12km from the beautiful riverside town of Saumur and under an hour by car from Tours.
You can stroll or cycle to the local village, around 1.5km away, where you will find a grocery store, boulangerie, tabac, service garage as well as two restaurants and a bar. Keen cyclists note that the Loire a Velo passes nearby on the other side of the Loire River (through Candes-Saint-Martin, 5.5km away) and there are many popular walking routes across the area including trails from the village itself, a wonderful way to discover the local landscapes and Loire River.
Elegant Saumur lies only 12km by car, a vibrant town known for its picturesque riverside setting, impressive chateau and delicious sparkling white wine which you can sample in characterful bars. The weekly market on a Saturday morning is a great way to stock-up on a range of locally produced delights and there are plenty of shops and charming restaurants dotted across the town's medieval lanes. Look out for guided tours or even performances at the Cadre Noir, the famous national equestrian school in the heart of Saumur.
Closer to home, spend time in Candes-Saint-Martin (5.5km), one of France's classified ‘Plus Beaux Villages' where the Loire and Vienne rivers converge and home to the Saint-Martin collegiate church. Montsoreau (5km) is another gorgeous spot on the banks of the river with its 15th century chateau or drive south-east towards Chinon (23km) with its atmospheric lanes, castle, wine caves and surrounding vineyards. In the summer there are canoeing and kayaking opportunities along the Loire and Vienne as well as boat trips from Candes-Saint-Martin.
Europe's largest abbey, Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, is only 8km by car whilst the fascinating troglodyte caves at Rochemenier are around half an hour away.
Of course, there are so many iconic Loire valley chateaux to choose from within an hour such as Chateau de Villandry (45km), Chateau Azay-le-Rideau (42km), Chateau du Rivau (32km) as well as Chateau Royal d'Amboise and Chateau de Chenonceau, both just over 90km away beyond the historic city of Tours.
