Villa overview - owner's description

4 bedroom villa on the edge of a lovely mediaeval village. The house has full central heating, and has a living room, dining room, a balcony large enough for outdoor dining, and a modern kitchen.

The property is a large traditional granite house in the picturesque mediaeval village of Correze, which is on the Correze river in Southern Limousin. It was built on three floors and has four bedrooms, a lounge, dining room, a balcony with space for outdoor dining, attractive gardens and a barbecue.

The house is situated on the edge of the village but is still only 300m from the village centre, with various bars and restaurants. There are various retail establishments including a bank, a boulangerie, a charcuterie, a pharmacy, a post office, a newsagent/tabac, and a small supermarket. There are bigger supermarkets in the nearby towns of Tulle and Brive-la-Gaillade. There is also a dentist and a doctor's surgery in the village.

There is a sports centre in the village including a swimming pool, and there are bathing beaches at several local lakes.

There are a number of local country walks... several from the front door. The stunning multiple falls of Gimel-les-Cascades are a ten minute drive away, and attractions like the Dordogne River, Rocamadour, Collonges-la-Rouge, Tours-de-Merle and Les Monédières are all within easy reach, as are towns like Tulle, Brive, Treignac, Argentat and Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne. Jacques Chirac's museum in the nearby village of Sarran and is also well worth a visit.

This property has so much potential. First the good things. The bed we used was very comfortable with a memory foam mattress. The kitchen was very well equipped but lacked a toaster, not a big issue for us. We did not expect 5 star accommodation but what we had to deal with was unacceptable. The manager was an English estate agent from the next village who told us on arrival that the property had been for sale for a long time and had now been sold. She showed us round and then left. We soon discovered that the water was turned off. A phone call bought her husband back who turned the water on in the cellar only to find that there was a leak in one of the hot water pipes. We had to put a large bucket to stop the cellar from flooding. We were later told that the owner Rod knew about the leak following the last visitors and had not told the manager until after we arrived or done anything about having it repaired. We had to empty the bucket on a very regular basis for 3 days until it was fixed. As a result of the leak there was an air lock to the hot water tap in the kitchen. This was not resolved all the time we were at the property so had to get hot water from the bathroom nearby. The boiler in the cellar produced lots of very hot water so this was a plus. We knew that there was only a tv and dvd player so we tooks loads of films with us only to find that the dvd player did not work freezing about 60 minutes into the film. We were rescued by the manager who bought us one of their dvd players which worked perfectly. After about 10 days the weather turned much colder, 2 degrees at night, so we tried to turn the central heating on to find it didn't work. Another call to the manager bought him out again and an hours fiddle with the boiler to try to get it working without success. He came to the rescue again and bought us 3 halogen heaters which we used to heat the rooms we were using other than the lounge which had its own electric heater. Looking at the central heating boiler it was showing that there was a fault on the system. The manager told us the this was an old problem and that he had told the owner as it had occurred some time before. He also said that he had told the owner that he should have the boiler serviced as to his knowledge it had not been done for years. This he had obviously failed to do.
We soldiered on with the heaters for 3 days until three days before we were due to leave the boiler packed up all together so we also had no hot water. We had also discovered another water leak in the toilet where the inlet pipe had a small leak where it connected to the cistern. By this stage we had run out of patience and left 2 days early. I have to say that Carole and her husband who managed the property were brilliant and it were not for them we would have left much earlier. We have been holidaying in France for more than 30 years and have stayed in some very 'rustic' properties. This I must say has been our worst experience. The owner Rod should be ashamed that he had done nothing about the water leak and the troublesome boiler when he knew that both needed fixing. We can highly recommend the area and the village of Correze it is lovely. I hope that the new owners of the property know what is wrong with it before the move in

We had a lovely stay in Correze! The weather was a little changeable (quite rainy in the middle of the week), but clear enough for us to have a few good walks in the area, and we loved sitting on the balcony and watching the world go by!

We have had a wonderful time apart from the weather being so hot!! Everything was fine with the house and we found the whole area beautiful. We did a lot of touring (cooler in the car) and found every where we visited lovely.

This is a very spacious property and is very well equipped. I had taken all sorts of kitchen equipment of my own - as a result of previous bookings - and found that everything I needed was there, and more. Of particular benefit on rainy days there is a huge laundry room with lots of hanging space and as the boiler is located there its rather like an airing cupboard. The property is within walking distance of all basic food necessities. There is a boulangerie, 2 butcher/grocers, a tabac (with loto) and a small supermarket for just about everything else including a good selection of wine. The rental rates are really good with no electriciy supplement. Bags of hot water all day. If I could add one thing I suppose it would be the provision of a few sunbeds. I spent a month there from mid July and the weather was mostly sunny and warm, with the odd thunderstorm and overcast day. The villagers and next-door neighbours are extremely friendly and kind."

Spacious, traditional house, a short walk down hill from the centre of a wee town as quaint and authentic as you could hope for, like living in the set of Chocolat! And the surrounding area and towns are fascinating even in dull, damp, cool, "very unseasonal" weather such as we experienced."
