LUXURY GITE FOR 4 – CHARENTE/DORDOGNE BORDER
Peace and tranquillity in a beautiful rural elevated setting with stunning views

Recently renovated to the highest standard, this 2 double-bedroom, independent gîte with its private entrance and terrace, offers peace and tranquillity in a beautiful rural elevated setting with stunning views and yet within walking distance of local village amenities.

Set within 5000 metres of landscaped gardens with its 14 x 6 metre floodlit swimming pool, shared with the owners but no other holidaymakers, guests are in an idyllic location, to rest, relax in comfort and explore the captivating region of South West France

Saint Séverin is located in the south of Charente where it borders the green Perigord region of France. The region is renowned for its gentle undulating countryside interspersed with picturesque rivers, lakes and sleepy villages. It is also well known for its gastronomy, wines and sunny climate.

Description
The bright and airy ground-floor centrally-heated accommodation, newly decorated in 2008, has been stylishly and tastefully furnished throughout. From a private patio with its garden furniture and barbeque, the front door of the gîte opens to a spacious open-plan lounge and dining area with rustic terracotta tiles throughout.

The lounge is furnished with a cosy settee, arm chairs and coffee table. The dining area has a wrought iron glass-top dining table with matching chairs to seat 4. The American-style kitchen with breakfast-bar is equipped with a new electric cooker and ceramic hob, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge, freezer & microwave. Two double-bedrooms lead off from the living area, one with a double bed and French windows overlooking the front terrace and gardens, the other with twin single beds. A vestibule leads to a shower room and wc.

Other amenities included are TV with Sky satellite free channels and broadband internet with WIFI. Linen and towels are provided, also an iron, ironing board, a welcome pack and basic cleaning materials, although cleaning services not included

Local Amenities
Located on the outskirts of Saint Séverin and a few minutes’ walk to the village centre, guests have every convenience right on their doorstep. There is a supermarket, bakery, bank, butchers, newsagents/tobacconist, pharmacy, doctor, dentist and hairdressers. The property faces public tennis courts. Within the local area there is a golf club open to visitors and riding stables. The region abounds with rivers, lakes and quiet lanes for cycling and walking.

Attractions
Further afield, 7 Kms away, the medieval hillside village, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is ranked by the French Tourist Authority as one of the most beautiful villages in France and well-worth a visit for its famous monolithic underground church, craft shops, riverside bathing beach, boating, bicycle hire, restaurants and pavement cafés . About the same distance away, just across the border with Dordogne, there is the small bustling town of Ribérac with its famous Friday open-air market.

The surrounding area has many interesting places to enjoy: the old quarter of both Perigueux and Angouleme, the caves of Lascaux and Villars with their prehistoric paintings, picturesque St. Emilion, the Bordeaux wine region, Dordogne Valley and Cognac Distilleries are all within easy reach. Atlantic beaches of Royan (90 mins away) Arcachon and La Rochelle (just 2 hours)

How to reach us
By Air The nearest airport is Angouleme which is 40 minutes away by car. Bergerac airport is less than an hour away. A car is highly recommended and can be hired at either airport.

WOW what can I say, spending 2 weeks in this very quiet village was fantastic. The gite was perfect for us. Well equipped and very comfortable. With the owners on site they would assist us in anyway they could.
With a local spar and a couple of restaurants only a few minutes walk away you do not really need to leave the village, however you need to explore the beautiful surroundings.
Oh and if you want a swimming pool this one is great it the largest I have ever used at a rented accommodation.

Thank you for a wonderful holiday.

When we booked this gite we were assured that is was suitable for less able bodied clients.

The aerial view illustrated on the website led us to assume that the gite we were renting was a single story detached building to the rear of owners main property. On arrival we were disappointed to find this was not the case - we were in fact housed in a ground floor corner of their main house. There were no stunning views from this property - just an adjacent house and the main road into the village.

On the first morning of our three week reservation we had to request that the property be cleaned. Even when this was done we till had to clean a number of surfaces including the metal side bars of the double bed in the main bedroom which were thick with grey dust.

The twin room had two beds of differing heights butted together. Space around the beds was at an absolute premium! Additionally, and most importantly there was no window or ventilation. The doors to the bedroom and the kitchen/dinner/lounge had to be left open at night.

The bathroom was extremely narrow, with the toilet situated on one side practically opposite the very small hand basin. It was was certainly a squash to close the door and then sit sideways on the toilet. The shower cubicle was good, but the access to it quite hazardous for the less able bodied, due to the narrow tiled steps up and into the cubicle.

The kitchen area and fittings were good, but the lack of oven proof dishes and tins was a hinderance. These had to be requested from the owners, access to whom was via a steep flight of external steps - again an inconvenience to anyone of limited mobility.

Over a number of years we have stayed in many self- catering accommodations throughout Europe and we have been more than satisfied. But unfortunately we found this particular gite did not meet our requirements or expectations.

Initially we had decided not to reply to your request for a review as we were putting the visit down to experience, but due to the email received from the owners this is now our response.

We had a fantastic fortnight in this deceptively spacious/well maintained and well equipped gite. The pictures do not really do it justice. With 2 teenagers the wi-fi was a real bonus. The pool area was larger than expected with great views over fields of sunflowers and rolling countryside. A very peaceful setting with a large private terrace which was ideal for star gazing. The local spar supermarket was very well stocked. The owners are very helpful and eager to make your holiday as special as possible. We would highly recommend this gite for a peaceful get away. Mitze and Rawdon were very warm and welcoming and eager to make our stay as good as possible. The gite itself was fantastically well-appointed, especially the kitchen, providing everything you could possibly need, and the pool was always very clean and big enough to enjoy proper swimming! In a wonderful location, only 5 minutes from shops and a restaurant but secluded enough to be relaxing, it was a perfect place. We had a lovely holiday here, made all the better by lovely owners! We would definitely recommend it highly.

Definitely recommend this accommodation. Superbly equipped, excellent recently decorated & furnished gite with welcoming hosts. Exceeded our expectations and I would have no hesitation in recommending this gite to a friend. The fabulous pool and its panoramic view were the icing on the cake!
